Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Friday, Dec. 12

New York Rangers at New Jersey (7 p.m. EST). The Rangers look to extend their lead in the Atlantic Division against the cross-river rival Devils, who sit in fourth place.

STARS

Thursday

— Petr Sykora and Pascal Dupuis, Penguins, each had hat tricks in Pittsburgh’s 9-2 rout of the New York Islanders.

— Scott Hartnell, Flyers, had a hat trick and Philadelphia staged its biggest comeback in 20 years by erasing a four-goal deficit in the third period to beat Carolina 6-5 in a shootout.

— Dustin Brown, Kings, scored his first NHL hat trick as Los Angeles rebounded from its most lopsided loss of the season with a 6-2 victory over St. Louis.

— Martin St. Louis, Lightning, scored twice and Tampa Bay ended a nine-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Montreal.

— Craig Anderson, Panthers, stopped 41 shots for his third shutout of the season and Florida won its second in a row to start a five-game road trip, beating Edmonton 2-0.

— Evgeni Nabokov, Sharks, made 31 saves in his first shutout of the season and San Jose won its 10th in 11 games, 2-0 over Anaheim.

THROWBACK COMEBACK

The Flyers staged their biggest comeback in 20 years by erasing a four-goal deficit in the third period and beating Carolina 6-5 in a shootout. Simon Gagne and Mike Richards scored the only goals in the shootout, and Philadelphia matched its biggest comeback since Feb. 23, 1988, when they wiped out a 5-1 deficit against Detroit and won 11-6.

SKID SNAPPERS

Tampa Bay ended a nine-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens. The Lightning were 0-7-2 since beating Nashville 4-1 on Nov. 21, their only other win in 16 games. Tampa Bay is 2-7-4 since interim coach Rick Tocchet took over for Barry Melrose. … The Coyotes snapped an eight-game losing streak against Minnesota with a 3-1 victory.

SO THAT’S A HAT TRICK

Petr Sykora ended the longest streak in NHL history without a hat trick by a player who had at least two goals in a game, scoring three times to lead Pittsburgh to a 9-2 rout of the New York Islanders. Sykora previously had 38 games with two goals without getting a third, far surpassing the 28 games by Hall of Fame defenseman Larry Murphy.

BY THE NUMBERS

Mike Commodore notched his first goal in 59 games and first with the Blue Jackets. … Eric Staal scored two goals and added an assist in the Hurricanes’ 6-5 shootout loss to the Flyers, scoring his 10th goal of the season and his 300th NHL point. … Sidney Crosby set up three goals in Pittsburgh’s 9-2 win over the Islanders, its first nine-goal game since beating the Flyers 9-4 on Feb. 7, 2001. New York allowed nine goals for the first time since Dec. 19, 2005, against Toronto. … The Panthers are 6-1-2 in their last nine games.

SPEAKING

“It really doesn’t matter what he says, to be honest. We’re in it together and we’re trying to get out of it. Stuff like that is like a fly on your back, you just swat it away.”—Tampa Bay coach Rick Tocchet in response to comments made by Barry Melrose, who was fired as Lightning coach on Nov. 14. In an interview broadcast Tuesday on The Fan 990, Melrose said, “I hope Tampa Bay doesn’t win a game in the next year.”

Friday's best NHL bets

New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils (-125, 5)

The Devils have found their replacement in net until Martin Brodeur is set to come back. Career backup Scott Clemmensen has won seven of his 10 starts and carries a solid 2.19 goals against average into Friday’s contest against the Rangers.

“I don’t know how many more chances I’m going to get,” the 31-year-old netminder told reporters after Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh. “This is mine right here, and I’m going to try and make the most of it.”

The Devils have won eight of their last nine and the players know they have Clemmensen to thank for the hot stretch.

“It’s been great. He’s a guy that has paid his dues,” New Jersey captain Jamie Langenbrunner said. “It’s great to see him get the opportunity and run with it.”

Meanwhile, the Rangers have been floating around .500 since opening the campaign 10-2-1. Captain Chris Drury has only 15 points owns an ugly minus six plus-minus rating in 31 games.

Pick: Devils

Ottawa Senators at Washington Capitals (-150, 5.5)

Looks like all that trade talk finally woke up Jason Spezza. The Senators' forward scored a hat trick last week against Pittsburgh and has five goals in his last four games.

Unfortunately for Sens backers, Spezza and of his teammates weren’t able to light the lamp Wednesday night against the Blackhawks Wednesday night. Chicago won 2-0 and handed Ottawa its second straight loss.

Despite Spezza’s hot streak, Ottawa is tied with Tampa Bay for fewest goals (62) so far this year.

Things have been brighter in the American capital. Washington is six points up on Carolina in the Southeast, it boasts an 11-1-1 record at home and the club just snapped the Bruins’ five-game win streak.

Pick: Capitals -150
