Vancouver at Minnesota (8 p.m. EST). Minnesota beat St. Louis 4-0 at home on Wednesday night to take the Northwest Division lead, a point ahead of Vancouver.

STARS

Thursday

— Patrik Elias, Devils, scored the tying goal with 1:30 left in regulation and added the winner at 2:46 of overtime in New Jersey’s 3-2 victory over Philadelphia.

— Martin Hanzal and Steven Reinprecht, Coyotes. Hanzal had his first three-goal game in the NHL, and Steven Reinprecht added a pair of third-period goals in Phoenix’s 6-2 victory over Toronto.

— Petr Sykora and Sidney Crosby, Penguins. Sykora scored two goals, and Crosby had four assists in Pittsburgh’s 5-2 victory over Carolina.

— Steve Begin and Maxim Lapierre, Canadiens, each had a goal and an assist to help Montreal celebrate its 99th birthday with a 6-2 victory over the New York Rangers.

— Jiri Hudler and Dan Cleary, Red Wings, each scored twice in Detroit’s 6-5 victory over Vancouver.

— David Krejci and Pil Kessel, Bruins. Krejci scored the tiebreaking short-handed goal in the third period, and Kessel had two goals in Boston’s 3-1 win over Tampa Bay.

— Joe Thornton, Sharks, scored the go-ahead goal with 12:19 to play in NHL-leading San Jose’s ninth straight victory, 3-2 over Columbus.

— Donald Brashear, Capitals, scored his first goal of the season with 13:10 left to snap a tie in Washington’s 5-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

— Craig Anderson, Panthers, made 45 saves in Florida’s 2-1 win over Buffalo.

SUSPENDED

Dallas instigator Sean Avery, suspended indefinitely Tuesday for using a crude expression to describe former girlfriends dating other players, had a three-hour disciplinary hearing Thursday with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. The NHL said it would make an announcement on Avery’s punishment Friday.

STATUS

Buffalo forward Patrick Kaleta was placed on injured reserve Thursday because of a head and neck injury. … Washington recalled AHL scoring leader Keith Aucoin from Hershey on Thursday. Aucoin had nine goals and 27 assists in 24 games for Hershey. From Norwich, he’s the only former NCAA Division III player in the NHL. … Carolina activated right wing Justin Williams (Achilles’ tendon).

START

Paul Maurice opened his second coaching stint with Carolina on Thursday night with a 5-2 loss to Pittsburgh. Carolina fired Peter Laviolette on Wednesday and replaced him with Maurice, the franchise’s coach from 1995 until he was fired in December 2003.

STUDIO

Barry Melrose, fired as Tampa Bay’s coach last month, will return to ESPN as an analyst Jan. 1. Melrose worked full-time at ESPN since 1996 before leaving in June to accept the Lightning job.

SCOUTING

Brampton center Cody Hodgson, drafted 10th overall by Vancouver this year, was honored Thursday as the Ontario Hockey League player of the month for November. He led the league with 13 goals, 27 points and a plus-15 rating in 13 games.

Vancouver Canucks vs. Minnesota Wild

The Canucks were defeated 6-5 by the Red Wings last time out, as +190 underdogs. The combined 11 goals sailed OVER the posted over/under (5.5).

Taylor Pyatt, Kyle Wellwood, Mason Raymond, Henrik Sedin and Alex Burrows scored for the Canucks.

Nicklas Backstrom stopped 22 shots for the shutout on Wednesday, as the Wild defeated the Blues 4-0. The Wild won that game as a -180 favorite, while the four goals fell UNDER the posted over/under (5).
