On the Ice - Friday
By Judd Hall

Friday’s NHL slate is set with seven decent matchups, but two have caught my attention. Boston and New Jersey throw down in a battle of the Eastern Conference’s elite. Meanwhile, the champion Red Wings get ready to face the Blue Jackets, who are trying to make the playoffs for the first time.

Boston Bruins at New Jersey Devils – 7:00 p.m. EST

The Bruins were poised to make a huge statement by holding a 2-1 lead over San Jose going into the third period last Tuesday night. But Boston (39-9-7, 85 points) couldn’t score on four power play opportunities and gave up three goals in a six-minute span to fall to the Sharks, 5-2.

Tim Thomas wound up stopping 30 of 34 shots on goal he saw from the Sharks. While that is an okay kind of night for him, the scores allowed in the third were a little on the soft side. Despite those Charmin quality goals given up by Thomas, there should be a reason to panic on special teams. The B’s power play has now scored twice in their last 29 advantages in their last seven games. That inability to light the lamp was amplified by a penalty kill that has surrendered six goals on 19 chances in that same seven-game stretch.

New Jersey (35-17-3, 73 points) feels like it’s ready to face the big boys in the East. It’s easy to see why since the Devils have rolled off 11 wins in their last 13 games. The latest squad to fall to New Jersey was the Islanders on Feb. 11, 4-2. The Devs were heavy $3.00 home favorites, but tied at 2 apiece heading into the second intermission. But they got a power play strike from Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner put in an empty netter to get Kevin Weekes his sixth win of the year.

Parise has been a huge surprise for the Devils this season on the attack. He has scored 34 goals this year, which is second to only Washington’s Alex Ovechkin and his 37 lamp lighters. And the Devils as a whole are sixth in the NHL when it comes to scoring, posting 168 goals as a team. How impressive is that? New Jersey scored 198 times last season.

Most sportsbooks have installed New Jersey as a $1.20 home fave with a total of 5 ½. The small outright play gives you a chance to get tremendous value with the Devils on the puck line for a plus-240 return (risk $100 to win $240).

The road team has won both games these two sides have played so far this season. But the extended history goes to the Devils, who have won 10 of their last 14 against the Bruins.

The ‘under’ has gone 5-2-1 in the last eight tilts the B’s and Devs played in New Jersey. That total play falls right in line with Boston as they’ve seen low scoring tilts in 18 of its last 24 games on the road.

Detroit Red Wings at Columbus Blue Jackets – 7:00 p.m. EST

Detroit (36-11-7, 79 points) has shown no signs of slowing down this season, winning five straight games to put themselves up by 11 points in the Central Division. This Red Wings side really don’t have a weakness. If there is anything that could be any question mark it would have to be who is their No. 1 goaltender? Chris Osgood is the man who just helped them win the Stanley Cup last season. But the Wings have used Ty Conklin in their last three games…all victories. And he’s 11-3-1 in his last 15 starts. Compare that to Osgood going 5-2-2 since the start of the New Year.

The Blue Jackets are staying in the playoff chase thanks to Dan LaCosta winning both of his starts between the pipes on an emergency basis. All the rookie did was stop the Sharks on Feb. 7 and shut out the Avalanche just last Tuesday. But LaCosta be taking a back seat to Vezina and Calder Trophy candidate Steve Mason.

Mason is slated to be on the ice this Friday after time on Injured Reserve due to a bout with mononucleosis. The question is will we be seeing the guy that started the season 19-10-2 with a goals against average of 1.98 or the one that gave up six goals in his last two starts before going on the IR?

Regardless of who starts in goal, it is the Jackets’ offense that must play a full 60 minutes. Columbus didn’t score until the third period against the Avalanche in what became a 3-0 victory on Feb. 10. The Blue Jackets’ most pressing attack issue is when they have the advantage. After all, you can’t expect to make the postseason if you’re dead last in the NHL with a 11.8 percent conversion on the power play.

The betting shops tabbed the Red Wings as $1.70 with a total of 5 ½. Bettors can back Columbus to win outright at plus-160 (risk $100 to win $160).

While most of the public will back Detroit in this spot, remember that the Blue Jackets have won three of their last four home tilts against the champs.

Columbus is also on a 7-3 run in its last 10 fixtures at Nationwide Arena this season. The ‘under’ is 13-4 in the Jackets past 17 home tilts as well. But they are just 3-6-1 against Central Division foes this year.

The Wings will be entering this contest after facing Minnesota the previous night. That could help bettors out since Detroit is 7-3 in its past 10 games when playing without a day off.

The ‘under’ has hit in five of the last six showdowns between these franchises.
