Monday's Best NHL Bets

San Jose Sharks at Toronto Maple Leafs (+134, 5.5)

The Leafs are playing like a different team since the two big trades that brought in defenseman Dion Phaneuf and goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere. The club is 2-1 since the roster shakeup and Giguere is 2-0 with two shutouts in his two starts for the Buds.

Saturday’s win over the Senators was dedicated to GM Brian Burke whose son passed away in a car accident in Michigan on Friday.

“I’m really proud of our team, that we didn’t allow this to be a distraction, that we wanted it for Brendan, for Brian and the whole family,” Leafs coach Ron Wilson said told Toronto reporters.

Ottawa had been on an 11-game winning streak before losing 5-0 to the Buds, but Toronto might be in for a reality check when San Jose comes to town.

The Sharks have won eight of their last 10 games and are averaging 4.4 goals per game over the stretch.

Pick: San Jose

New Jersey Devils at Philadelphia Flyers (-115, 5.5)

The Devils have long been considered a boring team to watch but hockey fans might have to rethink that label now that Ilya Kovalchuk is a Devil and Patrik Elias is back in the lineup.

New Jersey is averaging 35 shots a night since Kovalchuk came over from Atlanta and the big Russian notched two helpers in his Devils debut.

The penalty kill, normally a team strength, has been the biggest problem for NJ. The Devils have allowed five power play goals (in 15 chances) over their last four games.

Expect the Flyers to cash in with the man advantage and push the final score over the 5.5 total.

Pick: Over
