SCOREBOARD

Monday, Nov. 3

Columbus at New York Islanders (7 p.m. EST). The last-place Blue Jackets takes on an Islanders team that has lost six straight (0-5-1) and owns the worst record in the NHL.

STARS

Sunday

— Ales Hemsky, Oilers, had two goals and an assist as Edmonton ended Philadelphia’s four-game winning streak with a 5-4 victory.

— Ilya Kovalchuk, Thrashers, scored two goals and added an assist in Atlanta’s 5-3 win over Florida.

— Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Ducks, had 34 saves to preserve Anaheim’s 3-2 victory over Calgary that ended the Flames’ six-game win streak.

— Devin Setoguchi, Sharks, scored two goals to help San Jose beat Colorado 5-3.

STREAK BUSTER

New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur will miss at least one game with a bruised elbow, ending a career-high streak of 51 regular-season starts. The team said Brodeur will not start Monday against the Buffalo Sabres after being injured Saturday in a 6-1 win over Atlanta. He was set to undergo an X-ray and MRI examination Sunday. Brodeur’s streak began Jan. 8 last season.

SCORING AT WILL

Vancouver came in with the NHL’s only perfect penalty killing on home ice but was no match for the Red Wings’ league-leading power play. Detroit wasted little time improving on its 30.4 percent efficiency, scoring on their first shot with the man advantage to end the Canucks’ streak of 12-straight kills at home. The Red Wings finished 3-for-5 on the power-play.

MILESTONES

Todd White played in his 500th NHL game in Atlanta’s 5-3 loss to Florida. … Florida’s Jay Bouwmeester played in his 400th game and Kamil Kreps took part in his 100th.

STREAKS

Miikka Kiprusoff, who has played every minute for the Flames this season, had allowed a total of just nine goals during Calgary’s six-game win streak, a contrast to the 22 the Flames gave up during their 1-3-1 start. He gave up three goals in Sunday’s loss to Anaheim.

SPEAKING

“When you don’t come ready to play, that’s what you get. “I can live playing 1-0, and 2-1 games if that’s what we need to win. There is no excuse for not showing up ready to go to work.”—Panthers coach Peter DeBoer after Florida’s 5-3 loss to Atlanta.

NHL Forecast for November 3rd
by Ron Raymond

Columbus vs. NY Islanders

The Islanders gave up a 4-1 third period lead on Saturday night to the Montreal Canadiens and lost the game 5-4. Whenever you have a total collapse like the Islanders did on Saturday, just carries over and over to each game until there's a culture change. The best player on the ice tonight is wearing number 61 and he's a Blue jacket! The UNDER is 10-2-1 for the Blue Jackets as a road team the last 4 Years and they are coming off 2 or more OVERS.

Prediction: Columbus 3 NY Islanders 2

Buffalo vs. New Jersey

Life without Brodeur starts for the New Jersey Devils and now the Devils will see what type of team they are without their all star goalie. The Devils looked very slow vs. a quick Leafs team last Friday and the Sabres are a quicker team then the Leafs. Buffalo finally got off their 3 game losing streak last game, as they shutout the Capitals 5-0. The Sabres are 11-5 SU the last 2 years as a road underdog after scoring 5 or more Goals For in their last game.

Prediction: Buffalo 5 New Jersey 2

Colorado vs. Chicago

OK, gut check time for the Avalanche tonight and maybe playing in back to back games is a good thing for Colorado, as they can put last night's 5-3 lost to San Jose behind them. The Avs are playing against their old coach Joey Quenneville and Chicago has played some cup cake games the last few times out. Ryan Smyth stated to the Denver Post the team played strong last night, but conceded they got caught watching the game on some shifts. Therefore, look for the Avs to come out stronger tonight and great line value on Budaj who is 4-0 lifetime vs. Chicago. The Avs are 8-2 (SU as a Road team vs. a Western conference opponent and coming off a 3 game losing streak since 98.

Prediction: Colorado 3 Chicago 2
