SCOREBOARD

Saturday, Nov. 8

New York Rangers at Washington (7 p.m. EST). The Rangers (11-4-1) look to continue their fast start when they visit Alexander Semin and the Capitals (6-4-2). Washington is 10-0-1 in its last 11 regular-season home games dating to last season.

STARS

Friday

— Mark Parrish, Stars, had his sixth career hat trick in his Dallas debut, leading the Stars to a 5-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

— Jason Williams, Thrashers, scored his second goal of the game 48 seconds into overtime to lift Atlanta to a 5-4 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

— Michael Leighton, Hurricanes, made 22 saves to help Carolina beat the Ottawa Senators 2-1.

— Bryan Little, Thrashers, had two goals and an assist in Atlanta’s 5-4 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres.

BIG WIN

Peter Laviolette became the winningest American-born coach in NHL history when the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Ottawa Senators 2-1 on Friday night. Laviolette moved ahead of former Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella with his 240th career victory.

HEY, WHO’S THE NEW GUY?

Mark Parrish had his sixth career hat trick in his Dallas debut and the Stars beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-2 on Friday night. Parrish signed a one-year deal with Dallas on Wednesday. He played for Minnesota the past two seasons, but the Wild bought out his contract this summer. He signed with a tryout deal with Bridgeport of the AHL on Oct. 22 and had a goal and an assist in three games with the Islanders’ farm club before joining the Stars.

TIMELY LOSS

Kristian Huselius and Derick Brassard scored in the shootout, and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 on Friday night. It was the first loss for the Canadiens in Ohio since a 2-1 setback against the Cleveland Barons on Nov. 23, 1977. The Habs had beaten the Blue Jackets in their only two previous trips.

SPEAKING

“Those things happen—every year, somebody plays their 400th game, somebody scores their 300th point. If you stay around long enough, something will happen, and I’ve been fortunate and lucky to stay around long enough in this game.”—Peter Laviolette after the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Ottawa Senators 2-1 to make him the winningest American-born coach in NHL history.

NHL FORECAST FOR SATURDAY NOV 8TH
by Ron Raymond

Calgary vs. Columbus

With 6 games to put first on the Nevada rotation, why do you think the bookmakers put this game first Can you say trap game! The Blue Jackets are playing some great hockey of late and heres the scary part, Rick Nash is being held off the score sheet! The Flames are 4-10 SU in their last 15 trips to Ohio and the UNDER has cashed in 6 of their last 7 meetings at the Nationwide Arena. Plus, don?t let the Flames 7-6 win over Nashville fool you, they led 5-0 in that game.

Prediction: Columbus 3 Calgary 2

Buffalo vs. Boston

Nothing like a good old Adams Division rivalry game on a Saturday night in Beantown to whet the hockey appetite! Sabres might got caught looking ahead last night against Atlanta and Thomas has been a .500 goalie vs. the Sabres.

Prediction: Buffalo 3 Boston 2

Tampa Bay vs. Philadelphia

The worst thing about a hockey team is loose cannons and why would the Lightning trade for Steve Downie when it?s obvious Tampa Bay is struggling and to bring somebody on the team who can make things worst with a bonehead plays, can just spiral things out of proportion. Bad trade for Tampa, good one for Philly fans! The Lightning are 1-9 (SU) as a Road Underdog - During the month of November - Total is 5.5 and they are coming off vs. Atlantic division opponent.

Prediction: Philadelphia 4 Tampa Bay 3

Montreal vs. Toronto

From an Original 6 point of view, this is the game of the night, as the Habs are in Toronto and all the media will be there to hype this game on Hockey Night in Canada. From a betting perspective, youre getting good line value on the home underdog and the Leafs have done well vs. Montreal at home; they are 9-6 (SU) in their last 15 games at the ACC and the OVER is 11-2-2. However, the UNDER is where the real value is in this marquee matchup tonight. Montreal doesn?t do well on Saturday road games vs. division foes, as they are 3-11 (SU) in this spot the last 2 years. Toskala and Price steal the show! Yes, Im sorry to say, but this one goes to a shootout.

Prediction: Toronto 3 Montreal 2

New Jersey vs. Detroit

Kevin Weekes is coming off a 4-3 win over Tampa Bay, but here?s the bad news; the Devils are entering a place where they haven?t won since November 6th 1996! Detroit hasn?t played in 6 days and they will be ready to fly tonight.

Prediction: Detroit 4 New Jersey 1

New York Rangers vs. Washington

Too close for comfort these days for the New York Rangers and they are entering an MCI stadium where Washington has won 5 of the last 6 head to head meetings. In fact, the Rangers are 4-11 SU vs. New York in their barn, but they have a goalie who can steal a win on any given night. Henry Lundqvist is 7-2 (SU) vs. the Caps lifetime and the Rangers are 13-4 (SU) as a Road Underdog - During the month of November - Last 4 years.

Prediction: New York 4 Washington 2

Pittsburgh vs. NY Islanders

According to goalipost.com, Sabourin is expected to start tonight, but why wouldnt the Pens start Fleury, hes 7-4-1 vs. the Islanders and the Pens are 6-9 (SU) vs. the Islanders in their building in their last 15 trips. Pittsburgh has yet to break out and the Islanders have a knack of giving up big leads of late.

Prediction: Pittsburgh 5 NY Islanders 3

Florida vs. Phoenix

Lets thank the schedule maker for this one, as the Sharks are playing the Coyotes in this arena tomorrow night, so theres a nice look ahead spot here for Florida. Vokoun is 11-7-1 (SU) vs. Phoenix lifetime and teams are 3-8 (SU) before playing San Jose this season. Great spot for Florida backers here!

Prediction: Florida 4 Phoenix 3

Nashville vs. Colorado

Nashville showed a lot of courage and never quit attitude in their last game vs. Calgary, they were down 5-0 early and lost 7-6. However, they are playing a Colorado team who are desperate for a win and since 96, the Avalanche are 24-5-2 SU at home when the O/U is set at 5.5 and it?s a Saturday game.

Prediction: Colorado 4 Nashville 2

Dallas vs. San Jose

Heres my close my eyes and just bet the Stars game of the night. Dallas is a scary team to bet on this year, due to their firework players like Avery and Ott. When these guys start doing bonehead things on the ice, they cost not only their teams wins, but us bettors some cash! However, Turco finally got the win last night and the Stars are 12-4 (SU) on the road after a 3 goal or more win the last 2 years. Plus, no Nabokov tonight, Boucher gets the call.

Prediction: Dallas 4 San Jose 3

Minnesota vs. Vancouver

Heres a soccer game waiting to happen. You have Backstrom and Luongo between the pipes tonight, so easy UNDER right Im not falling for it, my O/U Parity Calculator ratings index says theres a 71% chance of this game going OVER the total and when MINNESOTA team played as a Road team - Total is 5.0 - After a division game - Scored 3 goals FOR in their last game; the OVER is 10-2-3 since 2001.

Prediction: Vancouver 5 Minnesota 4

St.Louis vs. LA Kings

Finally looks like Legace will be back in nets tonight and the Blues need him big time! Legacy owns the Kings with his 11-3-1 record and check the injury report looks like Kariya is a game time decision.
