Hockey Night in Canada
By ARI BAUM-COHEN

Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs (+120, 5.5)

The basics

Over the years, Ottawa and Toronto have developed one of the more bitter rivalries in the NHL.

The Sens are 33-21-4 and have won a club-record 11 games in a row.

The Leafs are 18-28-11 and won their last game after losing six in a row (0-4-2).

The teams have split the last 10 meetings.

Net gains

Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Jean-Sebastian Giguere recorded a shutout in his first game with the Leafs. He has a 5-8-5 record with a 2.98 goals against average this season.

Brian Elliot has been phenomenal for the Senators. He has started Ottawa’s last eight games and has not allowed more than two goals per start.

“He has kept us in a lot of games,” Senators forward Jason Spezza told reporters.

Under-valued trades

The Maple Leafs traded away four of their top eight scorers, received a good penalty killer in Fredrik Sjostrom and an upgrade in net (J.S. Giguere).

“It's been a hallmark of all my teams, build through defence,” Leafs general manager Brian Burke told the Toronto Star.

The Senators have gone under the total in seven of their last eight games and eight of 11 during their winning streak.

The last three games between the Sens and Leafs have gone under the total.

Culture change

The Leafs are now the youngest team in the NHL and, according to defenseman Luke Schenn, are a completely different team.

"It's exciting right now with a lot of young guys," Schenn told the Toronto Star. "Like it was said, you needed a bit of a culture change here and these guys bring intensity, you could sense it.”

The Senators are finally healthy and playing coach Cory Clouston’s style of hockey: strong defense and solid goaltending.

“We have structure, confidence, we get leads early in games, and Ells (Elliot) has been phenomenal,” said Spezza.

Karlsson hurt

Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson suffered an upper-body injury during Thursday 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks, according to a report Friday in the Ottawa Sun.

The 15th-overall pick of the 2008 draft, Karlsson is being listed as day-to-day with the ailment.

Karlsson, 19, has recorded one goal, 11 assists and 14 penalty minutes in 41 contests this season.

Edmonton Oilers at Colorado Avalanche (-250, 5.5)

The basics

The late night HNIC game features a Northwest Division battle between the hapless Oilers and slumping Avalanche.

The Oilers are 18-32-6 and have won two of three following a 13-game losing streak (0-11-2).

The Avalanche are 31-19-6 and have dropped four of five (1-4-0) following a six-game winning streak.

Road to ruin

The Oilers have not won on the road since December 11 - a span of eight games.

“You get down, you don't like what's going on. You start feeling sorry for yourselves. All of those emotions come to play and that's when it's hard to fight," Edmonton coach Pat Quinn told reporters.

Colorado has been solid at home this season, posting a 16-8-2 record and winning five of its last seven.

The road team has won six of the last eight meetings between Colorado and Edmonton.

Power-play problems

Edmonton has scored a power play goal in each of its last four games and is 10th in the league at 19.3 percent.

During Colorado’s five-game slump, its power play is just 1-for-13 (7.7 percent).

“We know we just have to forget about the last couple of games and get the top line and the power play going," forward Paul Stastny told the Denver Post.

The Avs allowed three power-play goals in their most recent game, a loss to the Nashville Predators.

Talkin’ totals

The Oilers have gone over the total in their last three games and 10 of their last 14 overall.

When AHL prospect turned back-up Devan Dubnyk is between the pipes, the over is 5-2 and in the two games that went under the total, five goals were scored.

The Avalanche allowed five goals in their last game for the first time since December 15. They have gone over the total in their last two games after five straight unders.

Saturday's Best NHL Bets

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers (+115, 5)

The Devils went down to Georgia and snatched away one of the premier players in the league.

Ilya Kovalchuk made his New Jersey debut Friday night versus Toronto, registering two assists, and he and his coach couldn’t have been more excited heading into the game.

"He is a guy that can change a game, a player that can make other players score," coach Jacques Lemaire said before the game.

"This is the first time in my career I got a chance to play for a first-class organization, the team who won three Stanley Cups,” Kavulchuk said.

The Rangers are another team that was in the trade market recently, but their acquisition of Olli Jokinen hasn’t pulled them out of a recent slump.

Jokinen has scored two points (1 goal) since joining New York, but the team has lost two straight, seven of its last eight and sits outside of the Eastern Conference playoff standings.

The Devs have won two straight versus the Rangers and two of the last three in New Jersey.

Pick: Devils

Buffalo Sabres at Columbus Blue Jackets (N/A)

Fire your coach. The oldest trick in the book worked for Columbus…for at least one game.

Ken Hitchcock was relieved of his duties Wednesday and the Blue Jackets responded with a 2-1 home win over the Stars for their new coach Claude Noel.

"We looked like a different team," said captain Rick Nash. "[It was] a totally different vibe out there tonight. It was nice."

While the mood has lightened in the Columbus locker room, the scoring deficiencies still remain.

The Jackets have scored two or fewer goals in 18 of their last 27 games and are posting a 1.8 gpg average over their last four.

The Sabres have had trouble netting the puck as well in recent games. In the team’s last seven outings, Buffalo is posting a 2.4 gpg average.

Five or fewer goals have been scored in six of the last 10 games between these two teams.

Pick: Under
