What bettors need to know: Hockey Night In Canada
By DUSTIN NIELSON

Buffalo Sabres at Montreal Canadiens

The heat is on

The Montreal Canadiens are clinging to the final playoff spot in Eastern Conference and one of the two teams chasing them is the Buffalo Sabres. For Buffalo this game is pretty much a must win as they are not only trying to catch Montreal but also have to leap frog the Florida Panthers.

Saturday night’s tilt will be the sixth and final meeting of the season between the two sides with Buffalo holding a 3-2 advantage through the first five games.

Miller time

This weekend marks the return of Ryan Miller to the crease in Buffalo. The Sabres won just four times in the 13 games that Miller was sidelined.

"I'm a goalie. I go out and try to stop the puck," Miller told reporters. "If I can help make a difference, I want to do it. But by no means a guarantee, by no means a savoir."

"Any time you get your No. 1 goaltender back, that's a big deal," Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said. "We know we have to put a string of games together. That's obvious.”

Captain Koivu

Facing two games that they had to win this past week, Hab’s Captain Saku Koivu stepped up and led the way. Koivu had three points against the Thrashers Tuesday and scored the overtime winner against the Lightning Thursday.

"I saw the net was wide open and maybe I got too excited about it," Koivu told the press. "I think I hit his glove, but then I got the rebound and I just wanted to get it in. I think it hit someone."

The line of Koivu, Alex Kovalev and Alex Tanguay has combined for 14 points in the past two games.

Home ice and Carey Price

The Canadiens should be thankful this game will be played at the Bell Centre. Buffalo has just one win in its last eight trips to Montreal. The home team has won 13 of the last 16 head-to-head meetings between the two sides.

Sophomore puck stopper Carey Price has picked up two wins in a row and is starting to regain his confidence but the Canadiens will still be looking for a little more from the youngster down the stretch.

Minnesota Wild at Calgary Flames

Where are the goals?

The third-best offense in the NHL is trying to find answers after being shut out on a recent two game trip with stops in Pittsburgh and Columbus. The Flames combined to fire 64 shots on net during the two game trip but could not beat either Marc-Andre Fleury or Steve Mason. Together Jarome Iginla and Olli Jokinen had just five shots on goal in the two shutout losses.

The goal scoring struggles were summed up when eighteen goal scorer David Moss cranked one off the crossbar against Columbus.

"It just seems right now like nothing's going in, "Moss told reporters. "If it hits the bar and goes in, it's probably a different game. It's a matter of trying to bear down around the net."

The Canucks are coming

It may be hard for the Flames to focus with all the talk about the Vancouver Canucks slowly catching them in the race for top spot in the Northwest Division.

"We're all aware," admitted Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff. "We should just concentrate on what we are doing but we know. It's pretty tough not to know, because everybody's talking about it."

"Obviously, they're close on our heels," Moss told the media. "But, you know, we're trying to focus on our game right now and trying to work things out down the stretch here."

Dominance so far

The Flames have owned the Wild so far this season, taking all four games. Three of the four tilts were one-goal games with two of those going to overtime. The penalty kill in the head-to-head battle has been dominant. The two sides have combined for just one power-play goal in the four games.

One in, one out

The Minnesota Wild have bad luck when it comes to having their best two players in the lineup on the same night.

Marian Gaborik has returned to and had four points in a big 6-2 win over the Islanders. The Slovakian star made his return against the Edmonton Oilers but in that same game Minnesota lost leading scorer Mikko Koivu.

Koivu has generated the little offense the Wild have created this year with 62 points on the season. He’s 16 points ahead of anyone else on the team. In nine games Gaborik has 10 points.

Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Saturday, March 28

Buffalo at Montreal (7 p.m. EDT). The Sabres are 10th in the Eastern Conference, five points behind eighth-place Montreal in the race for one of the eight playoff spots.

STARS

Friday

— Alex Ovechkin, Capitals, scored his 52nd and 53rd goals and added two assists to reach 100 points in Washington’s 5-3 victory over Tampa Bay.

— Ryan Miller, Sabres, stopped 33 shots in his return after missing 13 games because of a sprained left ankle in Buffalo’s 5-3 win over Toronto.

— Dustin Penner and Dwayne Roloson, Oilers. Penner scored twice against his former teammates, and Roloson made 51 saves in Edmonton’s 5-3 victory in Anaheim.

— Brent Seabrook, Blackhawks, beat Martin Brodeur from the blue line at 3:36 of overtime to give Chicago a 3-2 win over New Jersey. Seabrook also had an assist.

— Joey MacDonald, Islanders, made 42 saves for his first NHL shutout in New York’s 2-0 victory in Detroit.

— Jason LaBarbera, Canucks, stopped 22 shots in Vancouver’s 4-1 win in Colorado.

SCORING

Washington’s Brian Pothier scored for the first time since returning from concussion, helping the Capitals beat Tampa Bay 5-3 on Friday night. Pothier’s career was in jeopardy after he was checked into the boards by Boston’s Milan Lucic on Jan. 3, 2008. The 31-year-old defenseman had headaches and dizziness for nearly a year, and was making little progress until a specialist fitted him with glasses that helped fix his vision problems. He made his NHL return March 16.

SIGNING

Colorado signed former University of Minnesota forward Ryan Stoa to an entry-level contract Friday. The 21-year-old Stoa, drafted in the second round in 2005, led the Gophers with 46 points (24 goals and 22 assists) in 36 games this season.

SCOUTING

Mike Connolly scored on a power play at 13:39 of overtime to give Minnesota Duluth a 5-4 comeback victory over Princeton on Friday night in the NCAA West Regional in Minneapolis. The Bulldogs’ Jack Connolly scored with 39.4 seconds left in regulation, and Evan Oberg tied it with 0.8 seconds to go.

SPEAKING

“It’s been a while and really feels good. I had to hold back the emotion a little bit, but I feel like I’m contributing. To put one in and an important goal was pretty special.”—Washington defenseman Brian Pothier after scoring in the Capitals’ 5-3 victory over Tampa Bay on Friday night, his fourth game since returning from a concussion that sidelined him for 14 months and nearly ended his career.
