What bettors need to know: Hockey Night In Canada
By DUSTIN NIELSON

Edmonton Oilers at Toronto Maple Leafs

Points in eight

It’s too little too late, but the Toronto Maple Leafs do have points in eight straight games and have won five of their last six. Thursday’s 2-1 win over the Capitals was a relief for the Leafs. It was the first time in eight games that they didn’t need to overtime or a shootout.

Gerber baby

Martin Gerber got his first start for the Leafs Wednesday and looked good making 36 saves to beat the Capitals. Gerber should get the majority of the work load down the stretch and is really just trying to get his career back on track.

"It's basically a shot at the end of the season to get something going, and just play," Gerber said prior to the game. "Leave it all out there and see what happens. It's all I can do."

Oil slide continues

The Edmonton Oilers have lost six of eight games including being doubled up by the Senators 4-2 Thursday. The Oilers have had trouble generating chances in their last ten games, hitting the 30 shot mark just twice. A trip to Toronto may not be the remedy the Oilers are looking for. They have won just once in their last eight trips to Leafville.

Not-so special teams

The Oilers’ special teams have been so bad in their last five games that the entire city of Edmonton should be embarrassed. Sheldon Souray and his cohorts are operating at just six percent on the power play in their last five and overall are just 1-for-27 in their last seven games.

The penalty kill is almost worse at just 67 percent effectiveness in the past five. The struggles could have something to do with team captain Ethan Moreau, who is out with an eye injury. Power-play problems could also stem from an injury to puck moving defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky.

San Jose Sharks at Vancouver Canucks

Drowning Sharks

All good teams have their struggles. The Sharks are attempting to navigate their way out of a nasty slump. They have dropped three in a row and four of their last five games. The problems were evident at home against Minnesota Thursday night. San Jose led 3-0 in the second period but gave up four unanswered goals to the Wild and lost in overtime. Despite the slide, the Sharks remained tied atop the Western Conference standings with the Red Wings.

Missing in action: Evgeni Nabokov

If goaltenders came wrapped in a colourful box, Evgeni Nabokov would be just the present the Sharks need. It’s not a coincidence that the Sharks haven’t won a game since Nabokov went down with a lower body injury. Fox Sports reported that Nabokov remains out and doesn’t give a date for his return. The Sharks have called up German prospect Thomas Greiss to back up Brian Boucher.

Red-hot Canucks

I can picture Canucks GM Mike Gillis sitting behind a desk somewhere rubbing his hands together like Monty Burns on The Simpsons. Gillis’ plan appears to be working as the Canucks have won seven of their last eight games and haven’t allowed more than three goals in their past ten. After a slow start Roberto Luongo has regain his pre-injury form.

No moves no problem for Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks remained silent prior to the NHL trade deadline. Chicago and Calgary are both ahead of the Canucks in the standings and made additions at the deadline.

"We're happy with what we have," Vancouver GM Mike Gillis told reporters. "We've played well against those teams, played well against every conference team."

The Canucks made their splash early by signing Mats Sundin, who is now an integral part of a much-improved offense.

Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Saturday, March 7

San Jose at Vancouver (10 p.m. EST). The Sharks have lost four of their last five games, while the Canucks have won 11 of 13.

STARS

Friday

— Ray Whitney, Hurricanes, reached 300 career goals, scoring three times on the power play in Carolina’s 6-1 victory over Calgary.

— Tim Connolly and Patrick Lalime, Sabres. Connolly had two goals and two assists, and Lalime made 29 saves in Buffalo’s 5-1 win over Phoenix.

— Brad Boyes, Blues, scored 27 seconds into overtime and set up two first-period goals in St. Louis’ 4-3 victory in Tampa Bay.

— Loui Eriksson and Marty Turco, Stars. Eriksson scored two goals, and Turco made 36 saves in Dallas’ 3-2 victory in Anaheim.

— Kari Lehtonen, Thrashers, made 25 saves in Atlanta’s 2-0 win over Montreal.

SUPERSPOUSE

Colleen Howe, the wife of hockey great Gordie Howe, died Friday. She was 76. She died at her home in suburban Bloomfield Hills after battling Pick’s disease, a rare form of dementia similar to Alzheimer’s, the Detroit Red Wings said.

SCOUTING

Philadelphia center Danny Briere could return Tuesday night against Buffalo. Briere left the Flyers’ loss to Calgary on Thursday night. He was examined by his surgeon Friday and told adhesions broke from his last groin surgery and there was some internal bleeding—enough damage to keep him out Saturday against Nashville.

SENT BACK

Philadelphia nullified its trade for Kyle McLaren on Friday, sending the defenseman back to San Jose after he failed a physical. San Jose traded the 12-year NHL veteran Wednesday for a sixth-round pick in the upcoming draft. McLaren, with Worcester in the AHL, hasn’t played since Dec. 10 after injuring his hand in a fight.

SCOUTING

Andrew Engelage tied former London star Steve Mason’s single-season Ontario Hockey League victory record with 45, making 28 saves in the Windsor Spitfires’ 9-4 victory at Plymouth on Friday night. Andrei Loktionov had three goals and an assist, and Ryan Ellis added two goals and two assists for Windsor.

SPEAKING

“I’ve been bought out twice, on waivers twice. “I’ve seen it all, that’s for sure, so 300, I’ll take that. Probably a lot of people didn’t think that would happen, myself included.”—Ray Whitney after reaching 300 career goals with three power-play scores in Carolina’s 6-1 victory over Calgary on Friday night.
