What bettors need to know: Hockey Night In Canada
By DUSTIN NIELSON

Pittsburgh Penguins at Montreal Canadiens (-105, 6)

Habs clinch

The Canadiens have backed into the postseason with three straight losses. But getting one point against the Boston Bruins was all they needed.

"The goal was to make the playoffs and we've achieved that," head coach Bob Gainey told reporters.

If Thursday night’s affair with the Bruins was indeed a preview of the first round of the playoffs, it should be one heck of a series. The Habs have beaten the Bruins the last two times they met in the postseason with both series going the distance.

Surprising return

Just days after Mathieu Schneider's season appeared to be in limbo, he was back on the Habs point. Schneider scored a goal in his return after a missing a pair of games with a shoulder injury.

"It was never that bad," Schneider told the press. "I felt great out there and I'm just going to continue to play. There's nothing that concerns me."

In the absence of Schneider, the Canadiens power play was 0-for-6 in two games but against the Bruins the Habs scored three times with the man advantage.

"It helped that we had so many power plays and I think the return of Schneider was a good addition," Gainey told the press. "He brought it and he brought it in a way that helped us win the game."

Playing for position

The two points up for grabs Saturday night would be big for both of these teams. The Penguins are in a three-way battle with the Flyers and Hurricanes for the fourth and fifth spots in the opening round of the playoffs. Finishing sixth may not be the worst thing. That spot would get to play the struggling New Jersey Devils.

The Canadiens are deadlocked with the Rangers for seventh in the Eastern Conference. A win by the Habs combined with a loss by the Rangers would mean Montreal would face the Capitals in Round 1. If they can’t secure the seventh spot, they will get the Bruins for the third time in the past six years.

Mr. Art Ross

Evgeni Malkin is one game away from claiming his first Art Ross trophy. Malkin heads into Saturday night’s game with 112 points on the season. He’s got nine more points than teammate Sidney Crosby. Alexander Ovechkin is four points back of Malkin and would need an incredible game against the Panthers to tie his fellow Russian.

Head to head

The Canadiens have taken two of three meetings from the Penguins this season with one game going over the total, one game pushing with the total and the first game of the year finishing under the 6-goal total. The home team hasn’t scored a power-play goal in this head-to-head battle this season.

Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames (-240, 5.5)

Mac T’s last stand?

Is this the last time that we will see Craig MacTavish behind the Oilers bench?

Oilers owner Darryl Katz has said that Mac T isn’t going anywhere but that doesn’t mean he’ll be back as coach. The media in Edmonton is speculating that for the better interest of the hockey team, MacTavish is going to step down at the end of the season. Oilers fans have been calling for his head since shortly after the team made a run to the Stanley Cup finals in 2006.

The Oilers haven’t made it back to the playoffs since losing Game 7 to the Carolina Hurricanes. The miraculous run in ’06 bought MacTavish a few more years behind the bench whether he deserved it or not.

Roloson’s tenure done?

Prior to Friday night against the Flames, it was reported that Oilers were going to start Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers for both games. Dwayne Roloson had started every single game since January 18 and Deslauriers hasn’t started between the pipes since November 30.

Now the question is, will Roloson be back next season?

"I want to keep playing until my body says 'No,' " Roloson told reporters. "Or until somebody else says 'No.' I would like to keep playing for another three or four years at least. That's what I'd like to do.”

The 39 year old started the year as the third-string goalie on the Oilers behind Mathieu Garon and Deslauriers but manage to win back his job when both goalies struggled.

Banged up blue line

The Flames No. 1 worry heading into the postseason is their defensive corps. Robyn Regehr, Cory Sarich, Rhett Warrener and Mark Giordano have missed significant amounts of time. Dion Phaneuf has been missing practice to help heal bumps and bruises.

Once the playoffs arrive and the salary cap is no longer a factor, the Flames will likely attempt to recall NHL veteran Anders Eriksson from the American Hockey League. Before Eriksson could make his return to Calgary he would have to clear re-entry waivers. There is speculation in Calgary that a possible playoff opponent may claim Eriksson just to keep him away from the Flames.

The last battle

This will be the last instalment of the Battle of Alberta for the 2009 season. You can throw records and stats out the window when these two clubs meet up, especially on the back end of a home-and-home series.

Prior to Friday night’s tilt, the two clubs had split the first four meetings of the season. While the Flames would love to come out of the weekend with as many points as possible, they would be happy escaping without any additional injuries.

Many people are predicting the Flames to get upset in the opening round of the playoffs regardless of their opposition, so building some momentum and getting the offense going would be bonuses from this final game of the regular season.

The second Terrier to win the award following Chris Drury in 1998, Gilroy was selected over fellow finalists Colin Wilson of BU and Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen. Boston University will play Miami University on Saturday night in the NCAA title game in Washington.

STATUS

Pittsburgh recalled right winger Miroslav Satan from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League after he cleared waivers. Satan had 17 goals and 19 assists in 65 games for Pittsburgh before being sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in a salary cap move at the March 4 trading deadline.

SCOUTING

Zach Boychuk had an assist for Albany in his first American Hockey League game Friday night, a 4-2 loss to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Boychuk, drafted 14th overall last year by Carolina, joined the RiverRats after Lethbridge was eliminated from the Western Hockey League playoffs. He played two games this season for the Hurricanes.

SPEAKING

“You kind of choke up a little bit. I had to get off the bench pretty quick after the game, I’ll tell you that. How can you not be emotional about something like that? People going crazy.”—St. Louis coach Andy Murray after the Blues beat Columbus on Friday night to clinch a playoff spot.
