What bettors need to know: Hockey Night In Canada
By DUSTIN NIELSON

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs

The specialists

The Montreal Canadiens power play is heating up at exactly the right time. The Habs have scored 10 goals on the man advantage in their past five games, firing at 33 percent. Montreal’s top power-play unit is doing the majority of the damage with Saku Koivu, Mathieu Schneider and Andrei Markov all scoring in a 5-1 win over the Islanders Thursday.

Since acquiring Schneider to patrol the point, the Canadiens are over 26 percent effective when a man up. Schneider provides a heavy a shot from the point, something the team had been lacking since losing Mark Streit to the Islanders in the offseason.

The enigma

Alex Kovalev is an all-world talent when he wants to be. In his past five games, Kovalev has silenced all of his critics. Kovalev has six goals and eleven points during a streak, helping the Habs go 4-0-1.

Kovalev’s success stems from the play of his linemates Saku Koivu and Alex Tanguay. The line of Tanguay-Koivu-Kovalev has scored 27 points in the five games it has been together and has totalled 12 of Montreal's past 21 goals.

"We had success in the first game and kept going," Koivu told reporters. "The whole team is playing a whole lot better right now."

The spoilers

The Toronto Maple Leafs don’t have much to play for the rest of the way but hampering their arch rivals’ playoff hopes should be incentive enough to crank things up a notch Saturday night. The Leafs hurt Philadelphia’s push for top spot in the Atlantic Division by taking the first half of a home and home set Wednesday by a score of 3-2.

The spoiler role has been made easier by the return of Tomas Kaberle. He missed returned a played 21 minutes in his first game back after missing close to a month. Martin Gerber is also eligible to return after serving a three-game suspension.

The over

All signs point to another run-and-gun game between the Habs and the Leafs. At least seven goals have been scored in each of the five meetings between the two classic rivals this season. The over is 11-3-4 in the Habs’ last 18 on the road and 7-2 in their last nine Saturday games. The Leafs will be on the second half of back-to-back games and may be a little tired, which could lead to defensive breakdowns.

Vancouver Canucks at Edmonton Oilers

Do or die

If the Edmonton Oilers have any hope of making the playoffs they can’t lose another game. After suffering a 2-1 loss to the Sharks, the Oilers find themselves 11th in the Western Conference but are trying to remain positive.

“No. 1 or No. 30, the result we need is the same,” Jason Strudwick told the media. “It’s not over. I guarantee you everyone has that attitude.”

MacTavish still safe

Craig MacTavish has been behind the Oilers bench for close to a decade and in that time has seen very little success. In any other organization MacTavish would have probably already been gone but he apparently has support from the top.

On Thursday prior to the Sharks game Oilers owner Daryl Katz sent a text message to an Edmonton radio station endorsing MacTavish. The message read “MacT is not going anywhere.”

Home ice would be nice

The Vancouver Canucks have clinched a playoff spot but they are looking to continue onward in a heated battle with the Calgary Flames for top spot in the Northwest Division.

"We want to continue to build momentum heading into the playoffs. We want to continue to push. We know we have to keep on winning if we want to stay on top of our division,” Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa told the Vancouver Sun.

Home ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs would be huge for the Canucks. They have won 11 of their last 12 home games.

Head to head

The teams have alternated victories through their five games this season with the Canucks winning the most recent affair 4-2 in Edmonton. Edmonton is 12-5 in its last 17 games played Saturday night. The Canucks have won three in a row on the road and four of their last six away from GM Place.

Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Saturday, April 4

St. Louis at Dallas (8 p.m. EDT). The Blues have won six of their last seven games to move into position for a playoff spot.

STARS

Friday

— Jeff Carter, Flyers, scored three goals and Philadelphia beat Toronto 8-5.

— Rich Peverley, Thrashers, scored his second goal of the game in the third period to break a tie and lift Atlanta to a 3-1 win over Florida.

— Jamie Langenbrunner, Devils, netted two goals in a 5-4 victory against Tampa Bay.

— Sergei Fedorov, Capitals, had two goals as Washington topped Buffalo 5-4.

SOUTHEAST CHAMPS

The Washington Capitals clinched their second consecutive Southeast Division title despite losing 5-4 to the Buffalo Sabres in overtime on Friday night. The point awarded for getting to overtime was enough to give the Capitals a nine-point cushion ahead of second-place Carolina, which has four games left. Alex Ovechkin raised his NHL-leading goal total to 55.

SEEMS LIKE YEARS

Nikolai Khabibulin made 25 saves, captain Jonathan Toews scored his team-leading 32nd goal, and the Chicago Blackhawks clinched their first playoff berth in seven years by beating Nashville 3-1 on Friday night. Samuel Pahlsson scored in the first period and Martin Havlat added an empty-net goal for the Blackhawks, who qualified for the postseason for only the second time in 11 seasons. Chicago moved one point ahead of Calgary and into fourth place in the Western Conference playoff chase. Before their drought, the Blackhawks made the playoffs for 28 straight seasons from 1969-70 through 1996-97.

STEPPING IN

Martin Brodeur made seven saves in a rare relief role, and helped the New Jersey Devils snap a six-game losing streak with a 5-4 overtime victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Brodeur was scheduled to have a quiet night after being honored in a pregame ceremony for setting the NHL record for regular-season wins. That changed when backup Kevin Weekes injured a leg in the opening minute of the second period.

SQUANDERED CHANCE

The Florida Panthers (38-29-11) missed a chance to tie the eighth-place New York Rangers (40-29-9) in the Eastern Conference playoff race by losing 3-1 on Friday night to the also-ran Atlanta Thrashers. Florida trailed New York by two points with a game in hand, but lost to its Southeast Division rival.

SPEAKING

“It was exciting at the end. The crowd was going and it was exciting to them, but it means even more to us. We didn’t want to wait for Sunday or anything later.”—Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews after Chicago earned its first playoff spot since 2002 with a 3-1 victory over the Nashville Predators on Friday night.
