On the Ice - Sunday
By Judd Hall

Sundays during the fall are normally geared towards the NFL. But there will be four matches on the ice this Sunday to give you a little variety in your betting diet. Let’s take a look at the early and late games on the docket.

Florida Panthers at New York Rangers – 1:05 p.m. EST

We’ll start off the day with the completion of a home-and-home set. And if this game matches even half of the entertainment of the Friday showdown, we’ll have a fun diversion from the gridiron.

The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of the opening period at Florida. But the Panthers were more than up to the challenge as Radek Dvorak and Jay Bouwmeester leveled the score after two periods.

New York thought it had the win sealed up after Aaron Voros lit the lamp for the eighth time this season for a one-goal lead. But David Booth came through with his second straight game tying score in the final minutes of regulation that found a hole over Henrik Lundqvist’s left shoulder.

Luckily for the Blueshirts, they had Nikolai Zherdev punch in the game winner during the shootout to clinch a 4-3 win and cash the ‘over’ on a closing total of five. We should be getting used to shootout wins for the Rangers by now; after all they’re 5-1 in them this season.

Zherdev is also something of a lucky charm for New York and bettors alike. He scored the opening goal at Florida last Friday to give him seven points over his last four appearances. And the Rangers are now 12-1 when the former Blue Jacket registers at least one point.

Outside of Booth’s play this season (12 goals – 2 assists – 14 points), the Panthers are really doing without their top offensive weapons. Winger Nathan Horton is indefinitely after getting cut by a skate blade on his left ankle against New Jersey on Nov. 26. Forwards Cory Stillman (concussion) is “day to day” at the moment and Richard Zednik (elbow) will be out of the lineup until the New Year.

Given the offensive woes for Florida, the ‘under’ has posted a 15-6-2 mark this year. That trend is even stronger on the road for the Panthers as the ‘under’ is 16-5 in their last 21 road contests.

Tomas Vokoun will be back in net for the Cats this Sunday. And he’s been posted a decent 2-2-1 record at Madison Square Garden with a goals against average of 2.76.

Anaheim Ducks at Carolina Hurricanes – 7:05 p.m. EST

It took a while, but the Ducks finally are looking like the team we expected at the start of the season. Anaheim has won three straight thanks to getting back to the same physical game play that helped win them the Stanley Cup two years ago as they’ve allowed an average of 23 shots per game; they’re averaging 31.8 shots on goal against them this season…third most in the NHL.

That bullying mentality will definitely play a big factor against the Hurricanes, who just snapped a three-game skid with a 3-2 victory at Philadelphia on Nov. 28. Carolina will once again resemble a M.A.S.H. unit with Scott Walker (lower body), Patrick Eaves (upper body) and Tim Gleason (lower body) are all “day to day.”

Despite the injuries to the ‘Canes, they have won three straight matches against Anaheim dating back to 2005.

The ‘under’ is on a 4-0 run for the Ducks right now, while Carolina has seen low scoring totals happen in six of its past eight matches.
