SCOREBOARD

Sunday, Nov. 9

Atlanta at Carolina (3 p.m. EST). The Hurricanes (8-4-2) host the Thrashers (5-7-2) in a matchup of Southeast Division rivals. Carolina rallied to beat Ottawa 2-1 on Friday night and Atlanta earned a 5-4 overtime win at Buffalo.

BIG WIN

Peter Laviolette became the winningest American-born coach in NHL history when the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Ottawa Senators 2-1 on Friday night. Laviolette moved ahead of former Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella with his 240th career victory.

HEY, WHO’S THE NEW GUY?

Mark Parrish had his sixth career hat trick in his Dallas debut and the Stars beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-2 on Friday night. Parrish signed a one-year deal with Dallas on Wednesday. He played for Minnesota the past two seasons, but the Wild bought out his contract this summer. He signed with a tryout deal with Bridgeport of the AHL on Oct. 22 and had a goal and an assist in three games with the Islanders’ farm club before joining the Stars.

TIMELY LOSS

Kristian Huselius and Derick Brassard scored in the shootout, and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 on Friday night. It was the first loss for the Canadiens in Ohio since a 2-1 setback against the Cleveland Barons on Nov. 23, 1977. The Habs had beaten the Blue Jackets in their only two previous trips.

SPEAKING

“Those things happen—every year, somebody plays their 400th game, somebody scores their 300th point. If you stay around long enough, something will happen, and I’ve been fortunate and lucky to stay around long enough in this game.”—Peter Laviolette after the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Ottawa Senators 2-1 to make him the winningest American-born coach in NHL history.

NHL FORECAST FOR SUNDAY NOV 9TH
by Ron Raymond

Atlanta vs. Carolina

John Anderson didn't win 4 AHL titles with the Chicago Wolves for nothing! Anderson is a good coach and he's got the Thrashers playing some good hockey right now. The Canes have only scored 3 goals in their last 2 games and Staal has been missing in action for a few games now. Kovalchuk is the best player o the ice today and let's back the Thrashers.

Prediction: Atlanta 3 Carolina 2

Edmonton vs. New Jersey

The Blackhawks are in a perfect letdown spot, as all is good in Chicago-land these days, they are coming off a 5 day rest period, they are on a 3 game winning streak, but the bad news is the Calgary Flames are in town and they lost 3-1 to Columbus yesterday. When CALGARY played as any home/road team - During Last 3 Years and lost their last game by 2 goals; they are 22-8 SU L3Y in this role.

Prediction: Calgary 3 Chicago 2

Calgary vs. Chicago

The Devils are slowly realizing they can win with Kevin Weekes in nets and they gave the Red Wings a good fight at the Joe on Saturday night. The Oilers are in town tonight and they are 2-11 SU as a Road team as an Underdog on 2 days rest and coming off an Eastern conference opponent. Roloson is 0-6-2 vs. New Jersey life time.

Prediction: New Jersey 4 Edmonton 2

San Jose vs. Phoenix

The San Jose Sharks are a well oiled machine and it will take a Mack truck to stop them! However, they are not blowing teams away, they are on a 6-game winning streak, but those wins were always by 2 goals or less. Phoenix is a funny team, they seem to have turned a corner from last season and this could be a measuring stick game for Gretzky's boys tonight.

Prediction: Phoenix 4 San Jose 3

Florida vs. Anaheim

The Florida Panthers will need to make a trade and get some help on offense. The Panthers can't continue to rely on goaltending and hard work to persevere every night. The Panthers have scored 2 goals or less in 8 out of their 13 games this season and you can't get the job done when you can't score goals. Plus, the Panthers are 2-10 (SU) L4Y as a Road team as an Underdog - Total is 5.5 and they are playing their 3rd game in 4 nights.

Prediction: Anaheim 5 Florida 1
