SCOREBOARD

Thursday, Jan. 29

Phoenix at San Jose (10:30 p.m. EST). Joe Thornton and the Sharks have been leading the Pacific Division and Western Conference most of the season, overshadowing the surprising Coyotes. Coach Wayne Gretzky’s club is a distant second and battling for a playoff spot.

STARS

Wednesday

— Michael Cammalleri, Flames, scored three goals—giving him eight in a four-game streak—to lift Calgary to a 5-2 win over Buffalo.

— Nikolai Khabibulin, Blackhawks, made 36 saves to lift Chicago over Anaheim 3-2.

— Petr Sykora and Kris Letang, Penguins, both scored two goals as Pittsburgh beat the New York Rangers 6-2.

SIGN HIM UP

The Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings signed forward Henrik Zetterberg to the longest contract in team history, a 12-year, $73 million deal that could keep the star forward in Hockeytown until 2021. Zetterberg could have become a free agent at the end of this season, his sixth in the NHL.

SOME TIME OFF

Alex Ovechkin took an excused day off from Washington Capitals practice on Wednesday, but coach Bruce Boudreau said the absence had nothing to do with the “stinger” the NHL’s reigning MVP got from a shoulder-first crash into the boards the night before.

“He’s fine,” Boudreau said. “I wanted to give him today off to rest. He’s probably a little stiff, I would think, but, I mean, he’s fine. And I asked him how his shoulder was. He says he’s OK, no problem.”

SPEAKING

“I just played terrible. That’s what happened. I can’t explain it. As a team we played great the first two (periods) and I played pretty good, I think, and I make a mistake on the second goal and then they get another one on the power play. I just lost my game in the third, totally, and that’s definitely not good enough. I didn’t stop the puck in the third. I’m upset with myself right now.”—New York All-Star goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who allowed five goals in the third period of the Rangers’ 6-2 loss at Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.
