SCOREBOARD

Thursday, Dec. 18

San Jose at Detroit (7:30 p.m. EST). The Sharks, who set an NHL record for most points (52) through the first 30 games of a season, have only one regulation loss since winning their first meeting with the defending Stanley Cup champions on Oct. 30.

STARS

Wednesday

— Michal Rozsival, Rangers, scored on a penalty shot in the second period and then netted the winner 3:41 into overtime in New York’s 3-2 win over Los Angeles

— Daniel Sedin, Canucks, scored twice to lift Vancouver to a 4-2 victory over Edmonton.

— David Clarkson, Devils, posted a goal and an assist and led five New Jersey scorers during a 5-3 win at Buffalo.

— Steve Mason, Blue Jackets, stopped 47 shots—one shy of the franchise record—and helped Columbus win its fifth straight at home.

STELLAR IN DEFEAT

Minnesota forward Marian Gaborik made a strong return to the Wild lineup, recording a goal and assist in a 3-2 overtime loss Wednesday night to Calgary. After scoring in a 4-2 win at Atlanta on Oct. 14, Gaborik sustained a lower body injury off the ice and missed 27 games. He assisted on the Wild’s first goal and scored to tie the game in the third period.

SHARK BITE

The San Jose Sharks’ spectacular start hit a slight snag. The Sharks (25-3-3) came into Wednesday night’s game at Columbus with 52 points, surpassing the 1929-30 Boston Bruins for the best start through 30 games in NHL history. San Jose was beaten 2-1 in overtime by the Blue Jackets and will face the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings on Thursday before returning home. San Jose’s five-game, road-winning streak was snapped but the Sharks earned at least one point for the 15th straight game.

STATS

New Jersey’s Scott Clemmensen made 23 saves and earned his ninth win in 11 starts, lifting the Devils to a 5-3 win at Buffalo. … Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 25 shots and beat Minnesota for the 20th time in 29 career starts. … The Rangers, who beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday, have 10 wins and two losses in games decided after regulation time.

SENT TO THE RAFTERS

The Vancouver Canucks retired the No. 16 worn by longtime forward Trevor Linden. In a pregame ceremony Wednesday night before the Canucks beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2, Linden’s name and number were raised to the rafters at GM Place. He is the second player to be honored this way in the 38-year history of the Canucks, joining Stan Smyl (No. 12).

SCOUTING

Bates Battaglia scored twice and Jiri Tlusty added the decisive goal in the seventh round of the shootout as the AHL’s Toronto Marlies beat the Lake Erie Monsters 5-4 Wednesday night.

SPEAKING

“It’s obviously a tough way to (lose). Maybe it’s a little bit of karma. They came into our barn a couple of weeks ago and outplayed us. We were fortunate enough to get the win there.”—San Jose right winger Devin Setoguchi after the Sharks were beaten by the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday night.

NHL FORECAST FOR THURSDAY DEC 18TH
by Ron Raymond

San Jose vs. Detroit

The Game of the Night in my view, as the Sharks got caught looking ahead last night in Columbus, as they lost 2-1 in OT. The Red Wings need a big test and here?s what the doctor ordered, a big game vs. the top team in the league. Normally a game like this will bring out the Red Wings top guns and I expect Hossa, Zetterberg and Datsyk to light it up tonight. When DETROIT team played as a home team - Last 2 years - During the month of December - Allowed 3 or more goals AGAINST in their last game; The Red Wings are 9-1 SU in this role the L2Y.

Prediction: Detroit 5 San Jose 2

Colorado vs. Tampa Bay

Hard to support a Lightning team who has 2 wins in their last 15 games and are averaging 1.67 goals for I their last 3 games. When COLORADO team played as a Road team - Total is 5.5 - With 1 day off - 3 games in 4 nights; The Avs are 8-2-1 SU in this spot since ?96.

Prediction: Colorado 4 Tampa Bay 2

Columbus vs. Dallas

Here's your ultimate letdown spot, as the Blue Jackets are coming off a huge home underdog win last night vs. the Sharks and it will be tough for them to match that intensity tonight after a night of traveling. When DALLAS team played as a home team - Total is 5.5 - With 1 day off - Coming off a Home win as a Favorite - Coming off a 1 goal win; The Stars are 8-2 SU in this spot.

Prediction: Dallas 4 Columbus 1

Nashville vs. Phoenix

If there's one thing about Phoenix, they?ve been a solid home fave this season at 7-3 SU and have allowed only 2.0 goals against in this role. When PHOENIX team Played as Home team as a Favorite - With 1 day off - Total is 5.5 - Coming off vs. Pacific division opponent; The Coyotes are 13-3-5 SU in this role since ?97.

Prediction: Phoenix 3 Nashville 2
