Washington’s Mike Green tied Mike O’Connell’s NHL record for consecutive games with goals by a defenseman at seven, scoring twice in the Capitals’ 5-4 shootout loss to the New York Rangers on Wednesday night. O’Connell set the record in 1983-84.

STATUS

Pittsburgh defenseman Sergei Gonchar has been cleared to play after missing the season to date because of a dislocated left shoulder. He wasn’t in uniform Wednesday night against San Jose. … Danny Briere practiced with Philadelphia on Wednesday, the first time the center has worked out with teammates since having groin surgery three weeks ago. Briere hopes to return Feb. 24 against Washington.

Ottawa Senators vs. Philadelphia Flyers

Brian Elliot stopped 31 shots as he backstopped the Senators to a 3-1 victory over the Sabres on Wednesday, as +150 road underdogs. The game's four goals went UNDER the posted over/under (5.5).

Jason Spezza, Shean Donovan, and Daniel Alfredsson scored, and Brendan Bell collected a pair of assists in that win.
