SCOREBOARD

Thursday, Feb. 26

Colorado at New Jersey (7 p.m. EST). New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur, seven wins shy of tying Patrick Roy’s record of 511 victories, returns for his first game since having left elbow surgery. Brodeur was hurt Nov. 1 and had surgery days later to repair a torn biceps muscle.

STARS

Wednesday

— Henrik Zetterberg and Ty Conklin, Red Wings. Zetterberg scored two goals— the first short-handed and the second on a power play—and Conklin made 34 saves to help Detroit beat NHL-leading San Jose 4-1.

— Martin Biron and Jeff Carter, Flyers. Biron made 34 saves for his second shutout of the season and 25th overall, and Carter scored his 36th goal in Philadelphia’s 2-0 victory over Los Angeles.

— Nikolai Kulemin and Vesa Toskala, Maple Leafs. Kulemin scored the shootout winner, and Toskala made 31 saves and turned aside all three New York attempts in the tiebreaker in Toronto’s 2-1 victory over the Rangers.

— Petr Sykora and Marc-Andre Fleury, Penguins. Sykora scored with 2:28 remaining, and Fleury made 21 saves for his third shutout of the season in Pittsburgh’s 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders.

SIDELINED

Sidney Crosby missed Pittsburgh’s game against the New York Islanders on Wednesday night because of a sore groin. He was injured Sunday in a loss to Washington.

STATUS

Detroit star Marian Hossa sat out the third period of the Red Wings’ 4-1 victory over San Jose on Wednesday night because of concussion-like symptoms. He scored the first goal of the game, giving him a team-leading 34. … With Martin Brodeur activated from injured reserve Wednesday, New Jersey returned Scott Clemmensen, 25-13-1 this season, to Lowell of the AHL. Because he was called up on an emergency basis when Brodeur was hurt, Clemmensen didn’t have to clear waivers. … The Rangers claimed left wing Mark Bell off re-entry waivers from Toronto. … Carolina sent center Brandon Sutter to Albany of the AHL on a conditioning stint.

SCOUTING

John Tavares scored his Ontario Hockey League-leading 49th goal in the London Knights’ 3-2 victory in Guelph on Wednesday night. Expected to be the top pick in the NHL draft, Tavares leads the OHL with 89 points—two more than Belleville’s Eric Tangradi. … Joel Broda and Brett Sonne each had two goals and an assist to lead the Calgary Hitmen to their 12th straight victory, 6-3 over the visiting Regina in the Western Hockey League. … Drayson Bowman scored four goals in the Spokane Chiefs’ 5-2 victory in Kamloops in the WHL.

SPEAKING

“I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but I’m a little concerned about the conditioning of the club. I thought we looked tired in the third period. We’re going to try and play an attacking style. We need to be in shape.”—Rangers coach John Tortorella after New York’s 2-1 shootout loss in Toronto on Wednesday night. Tortorella replaced Tom Renney on Monday, a day after a home overtime loss to Toronto.

Brodeur to make return Thursday
By ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur will make his first start since missing nearly four months with an elbow injury.

The Devils play the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.

The 36-year-old Brodeur was informed of the team's decision on Wednesday after getting the majority of work for the third straight practice.

Brodeur was hurt in a game against Atlanta on Nov. 1, and had surgery days later to repair a torn biceps muscle in his left elbow.

Brodeur has won four Vezina trophies as the NHL's top goaltender, including last year. He is on the verge of surpassing Patrick Roy's NHL record for career wins.

On the Ice - Thursday
By Judd Hall

We’ve got 10 games on Thursday’s schedule in the NHL. Yet two contests have serious implications for teams looking to be buyers or sellers as the March 4 trade deadline quickly approaches.

Anaheim Ducks at Boston Bruins – 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Ducks knew that their season was on the line when they started this six-game road trip last week. So far they’ve stepped it up by winning the first two games of the odyssey against the Blue Jackets and Sabres. The result of those victories by Anaheim (30-27-5, 65 points) have put them in a four-way tie for the final two playoff spots in the Western Conference.

There are a couple of things Anaheim should worry about though. The most glaring to me is the Ducks’ penalty kill unit. They’ve given up nine goals in their last five contests, which is awful for a team with a PK rate of 80.3 percent.

Another problem that Anaheim has right now is just staying healthy on the forward line. Travis Moen went back home during the road trip for the birth of his first child. Now the Ducks must deal with Ryan Getzlaf and his broken nose that was suffered in a cheap shot in their 3-2 win at Buffalo on Tuesday. The young pivot has said that he’s fine and will be ready for this contest, but we’ve not heard anything official.

Boston (41-12-8, 90 points) used solid defense and production from the entire roster in a 6-1 thrashing of the Panthers last Tuesday night. While it’s nice to get goals from guys like Byron Bitz and Aaron Ward, the Bruins need their top talent to score goals from Mark Savard, Milan Lucic and Phil Kessel.

The Bruins’ special teams unit has been performing well defensively by surrendering just one power play goal in their last six matches. A lot of that unit’s success to do with Tim Thomas playing so well between the pipes. He’s gone 2-1 with a 1.34 goals against average in his last three starts this season.

Anaheim has been in the zone when it comes to playing teams from the Northeast Division since they’re 5-0 this season.

The B’s have been great when you look at the entire season, but they’ve lost four straight against Western Conference foes.

The Ducks have played low scoring games against the league’s best teams this season, watching the ‘under’ go 6-1 in their last seven matches against squads with winning records.

Boston has been installed as a $2.20 home favorite with a total of 5 1/2.

Buffalo Sabres at Carolina Hurricanes – 7:00 p.m. EST

Playoff positioning is truly on the line when the Sabres and Hurricanes face off in Raleigh. Buffalo (31-24-6, 68 points) is in the eighth and final spots in the East. Sitting just outside of the party is Carolina (31-26-5, 67 points).

Most betting shops have listed the 'Canes as $1.45 home favorites with the total sitting still at 5 1/2.

The Sabres are starting life without Ryan Miller, who suffered an ankle injury in their win against the Rangers on Feb. 21. That means Patrick Lalime (2-8-1, 3.16 GAA) will be tasked with keeping Buffalo in the playoff chase down the stretch. He stopped 18 of the 21 shots he saw in his latest start, a 3-2 home loss to the Ducks last Tuesday.

Carolina had gotten itself back into the hunt thanks to a three-game win streak. However, that was snapped by the Senators, who beat the ‘Canes 4-2 on Feb. 24. This loss could be thrown on the fact that Cam Ward has started nine matches in a row and might be a tad tired. The odds are good that we’ll see Michael Leighton for this fixture since he entered the last match in the second period as relief.

The home team has won seven of the last 10 meetings between these squads. The ‘under’ has cashed tickets in the past two matches.

Carolina has seen the ‘over’ go on a 7-0 run when playing with at least a day off. That works out nice considering the ‘over’ is 5-1-1 in the last seven head-to-head tilts in Raleigh.
