SCOREBOARD

Thursday, Feb. 5

Chicago at Calgary (9:30 p.m. EST). Northwest Division-leading Calgary hosts Chicago in a matchup of two of the top teams in the Western Conference. The Blackhawks have won three of the first four games on a difficult eight-game trip. The Flames have lost two straight but are still 14-5-3 in their past 22 games.

STARS

Wednesday

— Niklas Backstrom, Wild, made 34 saves and helped Minnesota blank five Anaheim power plays in a 3-0 victory.

— Ryan Miller and Thomas Vanek, Sabres. Miller needed only 16 saves for his second straight shutout and fifth this season and Vanek scored three goals in Buffalo’s 5-0 win over Toronto.

— Evgeni Malkin, Penguins, had two goals, including the winner with 15.5 seconds left in overtime, and added an assist in Pittsburgh’s 4-3 victory over Tampa Bay.

— Nicklas Lidstrom, Red Wings, scored with 39 seconds left on a power play, lifting Detroit past Phoenix 5-4.

HOME SWEET HOME

Buffalo, playing its first home game in nearly three weeks after going 3-3 during a six-game road trip which spanned the NHL All-Star break, routed Toronto 5-0. Thomas Vanek, who now has 32 goals, had three goals and an assist.

McKenna’s Lightning staked him to a 3-0 lead, but they couldn’t hold it and fell 4-3 in overtime at Pittsburgh. McKenna made 31 saves. Pogge was blitzed in the Leafs’ 5-0 defeat at Buffalo. He faced 32 shots, twice what the Leafs managed.

STREAKING

SLUMPING

The Flyers have lost five of eight games to drop to sixth in the Eastern Conference after a brief stay atop the Atlantic Division. They fell 3-1 at home to Boston. … Phoenix has dropped five in a row after its last-minute 5-4 defeat at Detroit.

SPEAKING

“You have a better chance to win, when the other team doesn’t score a goal.”—Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom after a 5-0 shutout of Anaheim in which he made 34 saves.
