Buffalo, playing its first home game in nearly three weeks after going 3-3 during a six-game road trip which spanned the NHL All-Star break, routed Toronto 5-0. Thomas Vanek, who now has 32 goals, had three goals and an assist.
STINGY MILLER
Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, who stopped 28 shots in a 2-0 win at Phoenix on Saturday, registered his fifth shutout of the season with 16 saves against the Maple Leafs. He hasn’t allowed a goal in a span of 126:52, dating to a 5-2 loss at Calgary on Jan. 28.
ROOKIES HAVE IT ROUGH
Rookie goaltenders Mike McKenna of Tampa Bay and Justin Pogge of Toronto didn’t fare very well. McKenna’s Lightning staked him to a 3-0 lead, but they couldn’t hold it and fell 4-3 in overtime at Pittsburgh. McKenna made 31 saves. Pogge was blitzed in the Leafs’ 5-0 defeat at Buffalo.
