On the Ice - Thursday
By Judd Hall

Some familiar faces will be in new (and not so new) places the day after the trade deadline has come and gone. Let’s take a look at two teams that made some moves this week that will be in action this Thursday.

New York Rangers at New York Islanders – 7:00 p.m. EST

It took a while for the Rangers (32-24-8, 72 points) to get their first win of the John Tortorella last Saturday as $1.60 home favorites against Colorado, 6-1. A big reason for the Blueshirts’ victory is that they’re learning how Tortorella wants them to hit the ice: solid forechecking from every player. And picking up the purveyor of sloppy seconds/fashionista Sean Avery off the re-entry waivers will only help with that new mindset.

The numbers are showing the improvement as well as they’ve outshot their opponents 103-70. That has also helped out Henrik Lundqvist, who doesn’t have to stand on his head just give New York a shot at winning.

This new gameplan might change up what bettors can expect on the total plays. The Rangers were able to use that forechecking to post four goals on 12 shots in the first period versus Colorado. That lead from the opening act helped push the total ‘over’ the closing number of 5 1/2, snapping a three-game ‘under’ streak.

The Islanders (20-36-7, 47 points) got on the Colorado beatdown as well with a 4-2 victory as $1.10 home faves on March 2. It’s the second straight win for the guys on Long Island. What made this most recent triumph different was seeing offense coming from the skaters you don’t expect with Jon Sim posting three helpers in a winning effort.

Normally you would want to take the Rangers to win this contest since they’ve won two of the last three meetings. But the road squad is 7-2 in the last nine tilts in this rivalry.

The ‘under’ is on a 3-1 run in the last four head-to-head meetings.

The Blueshirts have had a lot of time off heading into this battle, but that hasn’t been an issue for them with a 4-2 record when playing on three or more days of rest.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Nashville Predators – 8:00 p.m. EST

Columbus (32-26-6, 70 points) came into the trade deadline as a “buyer” for the first time and pulled out a shrewd move in getting Antoine Vermette from the Senators for oft-injured netminder Pascal Leclaire. It gives the Blue Jackets a guy that can play at center with blazing speed and dump the puck to Rick Nash. He’ll also help out a league-worst power play at 12.6 percent.

The Blue Jackets converted their lone power play against Los Angeles as they won as $1.70 home favorites on March 3, 5-4. It was their best game as the Jackets were sloppy on defense, which played a huge part in Steve Mason stopping just 22 of the 26 shots fired his way. The high score also snapped a three-game ‘under’ streak that Columbus had going.

Nashville (32-28-4, 68 points) has caught fire by winning five straight tilts to get back within striking distance of making the playoffs. The Preds’ most recent win came against Edmonton as $1.40 home faves last Wednesday, 6-5. They were able to get Steve Sullivan and David Legwand to score two goals apiece, while stuffing the Oilers on their three power plays.

Columbus might have won two of the last three games they played against the Preds, but they’ve not won in Music City USA since April 3, 2006.

Nashville has also played great against the rest of the Central Division with an 8-6-3 mark. Compare that to the Jackets’ 5-6-1 intra-division record.

The Predators are 6-2 in their last eight tests at the Sommet Center. Columbus has dropped two of its past three road matches with the ‘under’ cashing in each night.

Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Thursday, March 5

New York Rangers at New York Islanders (7 p.m. EST). Sean Avery practiced with the Rangers on Wednesday, a day after being claimed from Dallas on re-entry waivers, but coach John Tortorella wouldn’t say whether the agitator would be in the lineup.

STARS

Wednesday

— Patrick Lalime, Derek Roy and Paul Gaustad, Sabres. Lalime made 38 saves— allowing only Thomas Plekanec’s goal with 1:06 left—and Roy and Gaustad scored two goals each in Buffalo’s 5-1 home victory over Montreal.

— Ty Conklin, Red Wings, made 25 saves in Detroit’s 3-2 win in Colorado.

SWAPS

There were 22 trades and a record 47 players moved in the final six hours of dealing before the NHL deadline Wednesday. In each of the past three years, 25 deals were completed—involving at least 40 players every season. The previous record for players traded was 46 in 2003.

STARTING OVER

Sean Avery made it through a 40-minute practice Wednesday, one day after the New York Rangers rescued hockey’s bad boy off re-entry waivers from Dallas. Avery spent the past month with the Rangers’ Hartford affiliate while remaining property of the Stars. He hasn’t played in the NHL since his suspension in December for making a crude remark about other players dating his former girlfriends.

SELLER

Phoenix was busy at the trade deadline, dealing Olli Jokinen, Derek Morris, Daniel Carcillo and Mikael Tellqvist. Morris went to the New York Rangers for Petr Prucha, Nigel Dawes and Dmitri Kalinin, while Jokinen was dealt to Calgary along with a third-round draft pick for Matthew Lombardi, Brandon Prust and a conditional first-round pick. Carcillo headed to Philadelphia for Scottie Upshall and a 2011 second-round draft pick, and Tellqvist moved to Buffalo for a fourth-round draft pick.

SHORING UP

Eastern Conference-leading Boston acquired right winger Mark Recchi and defenseman Steve Montador on Wednesday. The Bruins got Recci and a 2010 second-round pick from Tampa Bay for right winger Martins Karsums and defenseman Matt Lashoff. Boston sent center Petteri Nokelainen to Anaheim for Montador.

SHIPPED HOME

Carolina reacquired left wing Erik Cole from Edmonton on Wednesday in a three-team trade that sent right winger Justin Williams to Los Angeles and center Patrick O’Sullivan to Edmonton. In July, Carolina sent Cole to the Oilers for Joni Pitkanen.

SIGNINGS

Buffalo signed center Tim Connolly to a two-year, $9 million contract extension Wednesday. … Los Angeles agreed to contract extensions with defenseman Sean O’Donnell (one year) and goalie Erik Ersberg (two years).

SIDELINED

Calgary right winger Todd Bertuzzi is expected to be sidelined about a month after arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday to repair cartilage damage. He has 15 goals and 28 assists in 57 games this season.

STATUS

Buffalo goal leader Thomas Vanek returned to the Sabres’ lineup Wednesday night against Montreal after missing nine games because of a broken jaw. Maxim Afinongenov also returned after missing 24 games because of a groin injury. … Dallas claimed center Brendan Morrison off waivers from Anaheim.

SCOUTING

Jiri Tlusty had two goals and four assists for a franchise-record six points in the Toronto Marlies’ 6-4 victory over visiting Providence on Wednesday night in the American Hockey League. Tlusty broke his own club record set in a five-goal game against Syracuse on Feb. 18. Tim Stapleton, back after a three-game stint with the Maple Leafs, had two goals and two assists for the Marlies.

SPEAKING

“They were offers that didn’t fulfill our needs. I wanted two players in return, a defenseman who could play in our top four. Some teams thought their defense could play in our top four. Obviously, I didn’t.”—Florida general manager Jacques Martin after passing on trade offers for star defenseman Jay Bouwmeester.
