Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Thursday, April 2

N.Y. Rangers at Carolina (7 p.m. EDT). The Rangers trail the host Hurricanes by two points in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race.

STARS

Wednesday

— Mike Green, Capitals, scored two power-play goals less than 1 1/2 minutes apart in the third period in Washington’s 5-3 comeback victory over the New York Islanders.

— Al Montoya, Coyotes, made 23 saves to earn a shutout in his first NHL game as Phoenix beat Colorado 3-0.

— Thomas Vanek, Sabres, had two goals in Buffalo’s 3-2 overtime loss at Atlanta.

SOLID AT HOME

The surging Pittsburgh Penguins went 6-1-1 on their franchise-record, eight-game homestand, finishing the run with a 6-1 rout of the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night. The Penguins got even in points with the fourth-place Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Pittsburgh is 13-1-2 since Feb. 25.

SHOOTING FROM THE BLUE LINE

Washington’s Mike Green scored his 18th man-advantage goal of the season, breaking the franchise record for a defenseman, set by Scott Stevens. Green established the mark with two power-play goals in the Capitals’ 5-3 win against the New York Islanders on Wednesday night.

STARING AT PLAYOFFS

The Chicago Blackhawks snapped the St. Louis Blues’ five-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night and moved within one point of clinching their first playoff berth since 2001-02 and their second in 11 seasons. Chicago also jumped one point ahead of Calgary and into fourth place in the Western Conference.

STILL GOING

Toronto’s Curtis Joseph, who will turn 42 this month, made 32 saves in his 10th start of the season and beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Wednesday night.

SPEAKING

“We wanted to jump on them early, they had lost a few in a row there, and make it so they can’t go into their shutdown mode when they get in the lead. We carried the play in the first five or 10 minutes, got a couple of goals, and never allowed them to get much momentum.”—Penguins defenseman Mark Eaton after Pittsburgh handed the New Jersey Devils their sixth straight loss (0-5-1) in a 6-1 rout on Wednesday night.

Hot and cold NHL bets down the stretch
By DUSTIN NIELSON

There’s only a week and a half left in the regular season but that doesn’t mean you can’t cash in on some hot trends before the playoffs begin.

Hot bets

Buffalo Sabres – Over

The Buffalo Sabres are scoring goals in bunches and giving them up just as quickly. The over was 9-1 in the Sabres last 10 prior to a stop in Atlanta on Wednesday. More than a quarter of the club’s over games for the season (37) came during the recent streak.

Former Medicine Hat Tiger Clarke MacArthur has stepped up lately to provide much-needed secondary scoring with three goals in his past four games. Tim Connolly has also been red-hot lately with three goals and six points in his last three games. If the Sabres can continue to get support from Jason Pominville, Derek Roy and Thomas Vanek they should score at a four-goal-per-game clip to finish the season.

The return of Ryan Miller in goal for Buffalo may start to bring down the totals but in his first two games he gave up three goals each night.

Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks have one thing going for them in their race to make the Western Conference playoffs: experience. Nashville, St. Louis and Columbus are all experiencing this level of intensity for the first time. The Ducks have a group of Stanley Cup winners including leading scorer Ryan Getzlaf who won the Cup as a rookie in 2006.

"It's good to see our team showing the desperation when we need to and I think we're at a time in the season where we really don't have a choice anymore," Getzlaf said. "The guys are playing like that -- we're excited for the run here and want to keep it going."

Down the stretch the Ducks play Vancouver, San Jose twice, Dallas and Phoenix. The Canucks have won 11 in a row at home and are due for a loss, San Jose is battling a series of injuries and the Stars and Coyotes have struggled all season.

Cold Bets

Chicago Blackhawks

Chicago’s final six games include two meetings each against Columbus, Nashville and Detroit. The Predators and Blue Jackets are fighting for their playoff lives while the Wings are looking to secure top spot in the overall standings. The Hawks are a combined 3-9 in 12 games against those three teams.

Chicago’s young stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane have never had to deal with the pressure of an NHL playoff drive and Martin Havlat has been known to disappear in tough times. Kane has gone six straight games without a point.

Dallas Stars

At one point the Dallas Stars were the hottest team in the NHL; that was quite a while ago. Now the Stars have just as many regulars injured as they have in their lineup. Dallas has won just five of 21 contests since losing Brad Richards for the season with a hand injury.

The Stars recently snapped a seven-game losing streak by beating the equally unstable Los Angeles Kings. Four of the Stars last five games are against teams above them in the standings and either battling for a playoff spot or home-ice advantage. The only game the Stars might be expected to win is on the road in Colorado but they have dropped two of three against the Avalanche this season. Games against Calgary, St. Louis, Minnesota and Anaheim might be a good reason to fade the Stars down the stretch.
