SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Jan. 13

Montreal at Boston (7 p.m. EST). Boston (31-7-4) leads the Eastern Conference with 66 points, 10 more than third-place Montreal (25-10-6).

STARS

Monday

— Trevor Daley, Stars, scored on his own rebound 1:51 into overtime to lift Dallas to a 5-4 victory over Detroit.

— Evgeny Artyukhin and Mark Recchi, Lightning, scored 41 seconds apart late in the first period of Tamps Bay’s 3-1 victory at Los Angeles.

SNAPPED

Dallas rallied from a 3-1 deficit after the first period and beat Detroit 5-4 in overtime Monday night, snapping the defending champion Red Wings’ six-game winning streak.

BEATING THE KINGS

Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith made 29 saves in a 3-1 victory at Los Angeles on Monday night, improving his career record against the Kings to 5-0-0. The only puck that got past him was Peter Harrold’s one-timer to the glove side with 1:58 left in the second period.

STATUS

Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo returned to practice on Monday and declared he is “back to 100 percent” after missing most of the last two months with a groin injury. Luongo, who has missed 23 games since collapsing 5 minutes into a Nov. 22 game in Pittsburgh, said the only thing keeping him from returning to the lineup is a return to form. The two-time Vezina Trophy finalist insisted he hasn’t set a return date, saying he was “doubtful” Tuesday against New Jersey, but listed himself as day-to-day, making Thursday against Phoenix possible.

WATCHING THE WINTER CLASSIC

The Detroit Red Wings’ 6-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field on New Year’s Day drew the biggest television audience for a regular-season NHL game in nearly 34 years. The Winter Classic attracted an average of 4.4 million US viewers on NBC, the network announced Monday. That’s the most since a Philadelphia-New York Rangers game on Feb. 23, 1975, according to Nielsen Media Research.

SIDELINED

The Columbus Blue Jackets placed captain and leading scorer Rick Nash on injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 6. General manager Scott Howson also announced Monday that forward Derek MacKenzie has been recalled from Syracuse of the AHL. Nash, named to the Western Conference All-Star team last week, is day-to-day with a lower body injury. The four-time All-Star has 17 goals and 22 assists in 40 games this season.

SPEAKING

“We got off to a good start, but they took the game over. … We didn’t execute very good and that led to their momentum. … Give them credit. They got beat in our building bad and they responded with a good effort.”—Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, after Dallas rallied from a 3-1 deficit after the first period for a 5-4 victory in overtime to snap Detroit’s six-game winning streak.

Tuesday's best NHL bets
Covers.com

Montréal Canadiens at Boston Bruins (-175, 5.5)

Not only are the two best teams in the Eastern Conference facing off in this game, but head coaches Claude Julien and Guy Carbonneau also get to outwit one another before joining forces as head coach and assistant coach of the Eastern Conference All-Star team.

The Habs have been on fire recently, winning their last four games and scoring a total of 23 goals during this time. Sergei Kostitsyn scored the go-ahead goal with 21.2 seconds remaining earned Montreal a 6-5 victory over the Washington Capitals Saturday night. They managed a total of three come-from-behind markers and racked up two power-play goals for the third consecutive game.

The resurgence is good news for a Habs team that had been struggling with their offensive special teams for the better part of the season’s first half.

“We’re working harder, supporting each other way more, getting a lot of traffic in front of the net and getting rebounds,” Tomas Plekanec told reporters when asked about the newly-successful power play. Plekanec has himself found his game with three goals and four assists in the past eight games.

Even though the Bruins have lost two of their last four games, they have won eight of their last 10 and cruised past the Carolina Hurricanes in a 5-1 win Saturday.

Pick: Over

Tampa Bay Lightning at San Jose Sharks (-370, 5.5)

It’s been a dismal year so far for the Tampa Bay Lightning and to make matters worse, trade rumors involving franchise-player Vincent Lecavalier keep plaguing the team.

Speculations involve Lecavalier going to Montréal in exchange for as many as four players including Chris Higgins and possibly Tomas Plekanec along with a prospect such as PK Subban of the Belleville Bulls, according to TSN.ca. The Lightning’s front office isn’t in agreement on this topic, some wanting Lecavalier gone, others wishing he would stay.

The way the Lightning have been playing, it’s obvious something needs to change. They hold one of the worst records in the Eastern Conference and have the third worst offense in the league scoring a meager 2.41 goals a game.

The Sharks, on the other hand, have an elite offense, defense and power play. The best team in the NHL collected a big 4-2 win on Saturday against a fired up Vancouver team led by the newly-acquired Mats Sundin.

Pick: Sharks
