SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Jan. 20

Vancouver at San Jose (10:30 p.m. EST). San Jose is coming off a 6-5 home victory Saturday night over Stanley Cup champion Detroit.

STARS

Monday

— Alex Ovechkin, Capitals, scored his second goal of the game on a power play 1:46 into overtime and Washington beat the Islanders 2-1, handing New York its eighth straight loss.

— Cam Ward, Hurricanes, made 35 saves and Carolina snapped a five-game skid with a 2-0 win over the Maple Leafs, giving coach Paul Maurice a victory in his return to Toronto.

— Vincent Lecavalier, Lightning, scored his second goal of the game to break a tie with 5:06 left in the third period, and Tampa Bay rallied past Dallas 4-2 for its first home win over the Stars since Feb. 19, 1996.

— Niklas Backstrom and Marek Zidlicky, Wild. Backstrom made 40 saves and Zidlicky, a defenseman, had two power-play goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory at Chicago.

LONG TIME, NO SEE

Nearly six years after Claude Lemieux retired, he’s back to pester the NHL again. San Jose recalled the 43-year-old forward from its AHL affiliate, adding a four-time Stanley Cup winner to a team already tied for the overall league lead. Lemieux probably will be in the Sharks’ lineup Tuesday night against Vancouver. He spent the past eight weeks riding the bus and playing against the next generation in Worcester, Mass., making sure his physical skills still matched his desire to complete a comeback that’s been on his mind since shortly after he retired in 2003.

WELCOME BACK, BRENDAN

Playing his first NHL game in more than eight months, Brendan Shanahan returned to the Devils and snapped a scoreless tie in the second period to help New Jersey beat the Nashville Predators 3-1 for its fourth straight victory. Shanahan, who turns 40 on Friday, spent his first four NHL seasons with the Devils before leaving for St. Louis in 1991. He sat out the first half of this season, then signed an $800,000, one-year contract with New Jersey on Wednesday.

SUSPENDED

Tampa Bay right wing Evgeny Artyukhin was suspended two games without pay by the NHL for a knee-to-knee hit in a game against Florida. Artyukhin was given a tripping penalty after a second-period collision with Panthers defenseman Ville Peltonen, who left Saturday’s game with a knee injury. Artyukhin will lose $10,215.06 in pay, which will go to the players’ emergency assistance fund. In addition to Monday night’s game with Dallas, Artyukhin also will miss Wednesday’s game against Buffalo.

BIG WINNER

Martin Havlat’s goal for Chicago in a 4-1 loss to Minnesota came at exactly 10:00 of the second period, earning a fan $1 million as part of a promotion with the Illinois State Lottery. The Blackhawks didn’t announce the name of the male fan, a season-ticket holder in the United Center’s 300-level.

SPEAKING

“The more I was told this was impossible, the more I wanted it. I still feel that way. This is just the first step to life back in the NHL. … I got into this with my eyes wide open, knowing that most folks out there would think that I’m out of my mind to attempt to do something like this.”—Claude Lemieux, 43, on his return to the NHL with the San Jose Sharks nearly six years after he retired.
