SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Jan. 27

Montreal at Tampa Bay (7:30 p.m. EST). Vincent Lecavalier, treated to enthusiastic fan support during the All-Star weekend in Montreal amid trade rumors involving his hometown Canadiens, returns to Tampa Bay to face Montreal.

RECUPERATING

Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby practiced with the team Monday after staying off the ice for five days to rest his ailing left knee, but his status for Wednesday’s game against the New York Rangers is questionable. Although coach Michel Therrien said Crosby looked sharp during the 90-minute workout, Crosby said that if the game had been Monday, he would not have played. Crosby added that he would see how the knee responded after a practice Tuesday before deciding whether to play Wednesday.

SHOOTING STARS

Jared Ross had a goal and six assists and PlanetUSA scored nine goals in the third period to beat Canada 14-11 in the American Hockey League All-Star game Monday night. It was the highest scoring All-Star game in league history, besting a 13-11 victory by Canada in 2002.

ATTACKED

Michigan State suspended two hockey players for the season after they attacked a Michigan skater during a game over the weekend. Late in the Wolverines’ 5-3 win Saturday night, Michigan defenseman Steve Kampfer was hit into the boards by Andre Conboy and Corey Tropp hit him in the neck area with his stick while Kampfer was prone on the ice.

SPEAKING

“It was everything. (Avery) was definitely part of the problem, but there were so many things going on. Injuries, inexperience, and him obviously in the dressing room, all that stuff. And when you kind of start clearing away all the smoke, you finally see the true team, and I think that’s what you’ve seen the last little while.”—Dallas’ Steve Ott on the Stars’ success since Sean Avery was suspended for making crude comments about ex-girlfriends dating other hockey players.
