Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Nov. 18

Minnesota at Pittsburgh (7 p.m. EST). Pittsburgh beat Buffalo 5-2 on Saturday night for its sixth straight victory. Minnesota has a two-game winning streak.

STARS

Monday

— Devin Setoguchi, Sharks, had a power-play goal and an assist to help San Jose beat Nashville 4-1.

— Nikolai Zherdev, Rangers, scored the only goal in a shootout and New York’s Henrik Lundqvist denied all three Ottawa shooters in a 2-1 victory.

— Roberto Luongo, Canucks, made 34 saves against the team that let him get away, but couldn’t stop Frans Nielsen in a shootout as the New York Islanders beat Vancouver 2-1.

SIDELINED

St. Louis center Andy McDonald is expected to be sidelined eight weeks after breaking his left leg during a 3-2 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday. MRI results revealed no further damage and surgery is not required. He isn’t expected back until at least mid-January for a Blues team that is currently 15th in the Western Conference standings.

BAD BREAK

Oilers center Fernando Pisani broke his ankle as he slid into the boards feet first as he battled for the puck with the Red Wings’ Nicklas Lidstrom with a little under 15 minutes left in the third period. Pisani will be out at least a month.

SIGNED

The Colorado Avalanche signed 22-year-old center Paul Stastny to a five-year contract extension through the 2013-2014 season. A second-round draft pick in 2005, Stastny scored 78 points in 2006-07, finishing second to Evgeni Malkin for the Calder Trophy honoring the league’s top rookie. That year, he set an NHL rookie record by scoring points in 20 straight games.

STATS

Islanders D Andy Sutton played in his 500th NHL game. … Toronto hasn’t been outshot by an opponent in 15 games.

SPEAKING

“All losses are tough. Shootouts are great when you win, and (not) when you lose. I don’t like losing any game.”—Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo after the Canucks lost to the New York Islanders 2-1 in a shootout Monday night.

NHL Forecast for Tuesday Nov 18th
by Ron Raymond

Edmonton vs. Columbus

In my view, Craig MacTavish might have just split his dressing room in half by calling out Dustin Penner the other day after their lost to Colorado and their 4-0 lost to Detroit last night might be the start of a long losing streak. In fact, Penner is one of those character players, who plays with an edge and when MacTavish called him out and questioned his productivity, I'm pretty sure that's not sitting well in the room amongst the vets. When COLUMBUS team Played as Home team as a Favorite - Total is 5.5 - Coming off a Road loss as an Underdog; The Blue Jackets are 11-4 SU in this spot since 2001.

Prediction: Columbus 4 Edmonton 2

Chicago vs. Phoenix

Great timing for Hawks coach Joel Quenneville to take his young Blackhawks team on a road trip, as they've lost their last 3 home games by 1 goal and this could really affect the moral of a young team who knows they are building something special in Chicago. The Blackhawks are a great offensive team, but their young forwards need to understand it's defense that wins championships and you cannot get into 6-5 shootouts with the likes of the San Jose Sharks. In fact, playing this run and gun offense puts the hawks in a bad spot tonight, as any road team who gave up 6 or more goals against in their last game this season, are 3-10 SU in their next game. Phoenix is 5-3 on home ice this season and 12-4-1 SU as a Home Fave when the total is 5.5 - After a conference game - and allowed 3 goals AGAINST in their last game.

Prediction: Phoenix 4 Chicago 3
