Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Dec. 16

Montreal at Carolina (7 p.m. EST). Montreal hits the road after going 4-2-1 on a seven-game homestand. Carolina is 1-1-3 since Paul Maurice replaced the fired Peter Laviolette as coach.

STARS

Monday

— Jordan Leopold and Andrew Raycroft, Avalanche. Leopold scored on a penalty shot and Raycroft made 34 saves in Colorado’s 3-2 win over Detroit.

— Ryane Clowe, Sharks, scored a power-play goal in the first period and got the deciding goal in the shootout in San Jose’s 3-2 win over Los Angeles.

SHARK ATTACK

The NHL-leading Sharks beat Los Angeles 3-2 in a shootout Monday to improve to 25-3-2. San Jose’s 52 points are the most through 30 games in NHL history, surpassing the 1929-30 Boston Bruins, who also won 25 of their first 30 games. The Sharks have won 12 of their last 13 games. ^CAPTAIN IN TEAL

San Jose captain Patrick Marleau, whose 254 career goals are a franchise record, has 16 goals in 30 games after getting just 19 in 78 games last season.

WINDY CITY

Those capricious winds at Wrigley Field that make baseballs do crazy things could be a factor on New Year’s Day when hockey takes over the home of the Chicago Cubs. But when the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings meet on a rink that will stretch from first to third base, neither team will have an advantage in the third period—even if it’s a blustery and cold day. The teams will switch sides in the middle of the final period, NBC coordinating producer Sam Flood said during a conference call promoting the network’s coverage of the Winter Classic.

SPEAKING

“I was thinking maybe shoot, because I’m a D-Man and keep it simple.”— Colorado’s Jordan Leopold after scoring on a penalty shot in the Avalanche’s 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night.

NHL FORECAST FOR TUESDAY
by Ron Raymond

Montreal vs. Carolina

The Montreal Canadiens have lost their scoring touch and were once considered the top power play in the league last season, are now ranked 29th in the league. Ward is 7-2 SU vs. the Canadiens and you can't win games when you average 2.0 goals for per game like Montreal has been doing of late. When CAROLINA team played as a home team - Last 4 years - After a non division game - Coming off a 2 game Road stand; The Hurricanes are 7-3 SU in this role the last 4 years.

Prediction: Carolina 3 Montreal 2

Washington vs. NY Islanders

If the Islanders were not stuck in a 6 game losing streak, this would have been a great spot to back them up, as they've won 6 of their last 7 meetings at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Centre. Furthermore, tonight's starter for the Caps Johnson is 1-6 SU in regular season play vs. the boatmen. However, they are in a rut and Ovechkin and Backstrom are on fire. Plus, when WASHINGTON team Played as Road team as a Favorite - After a non division game - Coming off a 1 goal win; The Capitals are 12-1-1 SU in this situation since 1998.

Prediction: Washington 5 NY Islanders 2

Colorado vs. Philadelphia

The Avs are in a back to back game situation and they are coming off a huge upset win over the Red Wings last night, so big letdown spot for Colorado here tonight. When PHILADELPHIA team played as a home team - Before a conference game - Coming off 3 overs; The Flyers are 7-3 SU in this situation since ?99.

Prediction: Philadelphia 4 Colorado 2

New Jersey vs. Toronto

Here's a golden statistic taken out of the archive for your O/U bettors. The UNDER is 11-1-3 for the Devils in their last 15 trips to the ACC and the last time a game went OVER the total was on May 7th 2001, as the Devils won 4-2. When NEW JERSEY team Played as Road team as a Favorite - Before a non division game - Coming off a 2 goal loss; The Devils are 12-4-2 SU in this spot since 97. When ANY NHL Team Played as Home team as a Underdog - Vs Conference Opponent - After a division game - Coming off a 2 game winning streak - Coming off a Road win as a Underdog; The Home Team is 4-13-1 SU in this role since 97.

Prediction: New Jersey 3 Toronto 2
