On the Ice - Tuesday
By Judd Hall

The holiday rush doesn’t just apply to the droves of humanity you see at the malls around this time of year. Tuesday’s card in the NHL proves to you that both the league and its players are ready for a break by scheduling 13 games on the day before Christmas Eve.

Here is a quick breakdown on the first four games to give you a jumpstart to earning some extra cash.

Ottawa Senators at Philadelphia Flyers – 7:05 p.m. EST

The Senators split up their former top line of Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley and Daniel Alfredsson for their last game at home against the Stars on Dec. 20. It worked well enough as Ottawa won in overtime, 5-4. Yet the Sens have not won the road since Oct. 30 when they beat Florida 2-1. Philadelphia is coming off of a tough 3-2 shootout road loss to the Devils. Yet you can’t really be mad if you’re a fan of the Flyers as they’ve gained a point in nine of their 10 games in December.

In the last seven meetings of these squads, the home team has won six of them. Philly has gone on a 9-0-2 run in its last 11 games at the Wachovia Center. The ‘under’ has hit in the last three head-to-head battles.

Washington Capitals at New York Rangers – 7:05 p.m. EST

Washington was hoping to be entering this matchup with a seven-game win streak in tow. That plan flew out the window when the goaltending went missing in a 7-1 drubbing at Philadelphia on Dec. 20. What’s scary about that is the Capitals’ offense got 25 shots on goal in the first period and 48 for the game. They are now 3-6 in their last nine road matches.

The Rangers played great during their West Coast swing with wins over the Ducks and Kings. And if Evgeni Nabokov doesn’t play standing on his head in the third period last Sunday, the Blueshirts would have won three straight in California. Still, New York’s offense still suffers but helps bettors with the ‘under’ going 6-1 in the last seven games.

Recent trends show that home is where the victory is as visitors have won just once in the last 10 games between these foes. The ‘under’ is 6-2 in the last eight scuffles between the Caps and Rangers.

Los Angeles Kings at Columbus Blue Jackets – 7:05 p.m. EST

A few weeks ago, the Kings looked like they could make a run at the playoffs. They still can play some April hockey but the four-game slide they’re on right now makes it much harder to believe it will happen. Columbus is also just three points out of the eighth spot in spite of losing six of its last nine games this year. Things will get more difficult for the Blue Jackets with the news of rookie center Derick Brassard going out for the season with surgery on his right shoulder.

Los Angeles has won its last two games over the Jackets, with the ‘under’ hitting in both matches. Yet Columbus has gone 3-1 in the four times they have hosted the Kings since 2006.

Boston Bruins at New Jersey Devils – 7:05 p.m. EST

It’s becoming quite apparent that nothing can stop the Bruins from winning. Boston pivot Patrice Bergeron proved you can’t play hockey with a skull made of paper mache by suffering another concussion against the Hurricanes last Saturday in a 4-2 win. Couple that win with the B’s 6-3 win at St. Louis and they have their second five-game win streak in their last 11 tilts. New Jersey is also running hot, winning three straight matches and 12 of its past 15. The Devils most recent win came against an equally hot Philly squad last Sunday, 3-2, in a shoot out.

The Bruins are 7-3 on the road since the beginning of November. And they’ve covered the puck line in seven of their last 10 games away from TD Banknorth Garden as well. New Jersey has seen the ‘over’ go 6-3 in its previous nine home fixtures.

Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Dec. 23

Boston at New Jersey (7 p.m. EST). Boston beat St. Louis 6-3 on Sunday night for its fifth straight victory. The Eastern Conference-leading Bruins are 19-3-1 in their last 23 games and 24-5-4 overall, their best 33-game start since the 1929-30 season. New Jersey is 12-2-1 in its last 15 games.

STARS

Monday

— Sidney Crosby, Penguins, scored 43 seconds into overtime to lift Pittsburgh to a 4-3 victory at Buffalo.

— Matt Stajan, Maple Leafs, scored twice in Toronto’s 6-2 victory at Atlanta.

— Daniel Sedin, Canucks, scored two goals to help Vancouver to a 4-3 victory over Anaheim.

WINNING DEBUT

Justin Pogge stopped 19 shots in his NHL debut, helping the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Atlanta Thrashers 6-2 on Monday night. The 6-foot-3 Pogge, selected 90th overall in the 2004 draft, was called up from the AHL Toronto Marlies the previous day.

PLAYING ROUGH

Anaheim and Vancouver, the league’s top two teams in penalty minutes, combined for 14 power plays in Vancouver’s 4-3 victory on Monday night. The Canucks were 2-for-9 with the man advantage, while the Ducks were 2-for-5.

SNAPPED

Sidney Crosby ended a career-high nine-game goal-scoring drought, getting the winner 43 seconds into overtime of Pittsburgh’s 4-3 victory at Buffalo on Monday night. … Buffalo center Derek Roy had his nine-game points streak snapped.

SIDELINED

Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard, who is leading all NHL rookies with 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists), will miss the rest of the season after suffering a dislocated shoulder that will require surgery. General manager Scott Howson said Monday the 21-year-old Brassard will undergo surgery in early January. He was injured during Columbus’ 6-5 shootout loss at Dallas last Thursday. Brassard was the sixth overall pick in the 2006 draft and was the NHL’s rookie of the month for October. He earned a point in 20 of his 31 games this season.

SPEAKING

“It was definitely a playoff-style atmosphere. We definitely have a heated rivalry out there. I don’t know what it is but we really don’t seem to like each other very much.”—Vancouver center Ryan Kesler after a 4-3 victory over Anaheim on Monday night in which the teams combined for 14 power plays.

This week's NHL betting notes
By DOC'S SPORTS

Mats Sundin

The painfully drawn out Mats Sundin free agency has finally come to an end. It seemed like he was destined to become a Ranger, but he signed with Vancouver in the end. The reason was simple - cash. Vancouver had lots of room under the salary cap, so they could pay him handsomely and still have money left over. Sundin will join his new team early in the new year. Between now and then, bettors have to determine just what impact the move will have. In thinking about that, here are three issues to consider:

Swedish connection - The Canucks already have four Swedish players on their roster. Sundin has played with three of them - Mattias Ohlund and the Sedin bothers - internationally. Sundin will quickly become comfortable with his new team.

Offensive need - Daniel and Henrik Sedin are both solid offensive forces. That's about where it ends for Vancouver. The Sedins won't be broken up, but there is a perfect spot for Sundin to land beside Pavol Demitra. If Sundin can find his legs quickly and develop chemistry with the talented Czech, then the team could get a significant offensive boost.

Ability to win? - Sundin says he wanted to join a team that could help him win his first Stanley Cup. The Vancouver media seems convinced that the Canucks can do it with him, but I'm not. Vancouver is sitting in fifth in the West and is in a fight with Calgary for the division lead. Sundin makes them better, but I'm not convinced that he makes them anywhere close to elite.

Show of Strength

There was a battle for Western superiority on Thursday and the outcome was very decisive. San Jose traveled to Detroit and left with its fins between its legs. The score was 6-0 and the game wasn't even that close. Ty Conklin only needed 24 saves to earn the shutout and Evgeni Nabokov was terrible - six goals on 28 shots. The outcome made it clear who the current class of the conference is, even if San Jose has more points. It was the second straight loss by the Sharks, but they bounced back in their next game with a win over the Rangers.

An Unfortunate Boost?

J.S. Giguere left the Ducks last week because of a death in his family. It's a morbid consideration in the circumstances, but you have to wonder if he'll get the same kind of boost in performance in his pre-Christmas return that Matt Cassel did in the same circumstance last week.

Another Headache

Boston Bruin star Patrice Bergeron was carted off the ice on Sunday with a concussion. The injury lands him on the IR, but the potential consequences are bigger than that. Bergeron missed most of last season with a concussion, so this could potentially be the end of his career.

So Long, Selanne

Anaheim's leading goal scorer is out for four-six weeks, but it could have been worse. Selanne cut his left thigh with his own skate when he collided with an Edmonton defenseman. An MRI revealed that there was no cuts to tendons or other connective tissue. Anaheim is sitting just 16th in team scoring and Selanne was third in points on the team. This could be a big blow to the playoff hopes of the squad.
