SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Dec. 30

Chicago at Detroit (7:30 p.m. EST). Chicago enters the home-and-home series with a franchise-record, nine-game winning streak. The teams will meet again Thursday in the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. The Stanley Cup champion Red Wings handed the Blackhawks their last loss—5-4 in a shootout in Detroit on Dec. 6.

STARS

Monday

— Maxim Lapierre, Canadiens, scored the final three goals of the game, leading Montreal to a 5-2 victory over Florida for its NHL-best 3,000th regular-season win.

— Steve Mason, Blue Jackets, made 24 saves for his fourth career shutout and Columbus beat the Kings 2-0.

— Evgeni Nabokov, Sharks, stopped 28 shots to win his 20th game of the season as San Jose beat the Stars 3-1.

— Eric Nystrom, Flames, scored a short-handed goal in the third period, lifting Calgary to a 2-1 victory over the Wild.

— Cody McLeod, Avalanche, had the first two-goal game of his career in Colorado’s 5-1 victory over Nashville.

MILESTONE

Montreal beat Florida 5-2 to become the first NHL team to win 3,000 regular-season games. Boston is second on the victory list with 2,694.

COMEBACK

Claude Lemieux signed a contract with the Sharks after spending the past month with their top minor league affiliate. The 43-year-old Lemieux signed with the Worcester Sharks on Nov. 25 after a five-year absence from pro hockey. Lemieux played parts of 20 seasons in the NHL, winning titles with Montreal (1986), New Jersey (1995 and 2000) and Colorado (1996). He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP in 1995, and his 80 postseason goals rank ninth in league history. San Jose general manager Doug Wilson said Lemieux will stay with the Worcester Sharks if he clears waivers Tuesday after signing his new deal.

UNDER THE KNIFE

Avalanche center Paul Stastny will have surgery Tuesday to repair his right forearm fractured in last week’s game against Phoenix. Stastny broke the arm after blocking a shot by the Coyotes’ Olli Jokinen in a 5-4 overtime win and is expected to be out six to eight weeks. … Blues left wing Paul Kariya will seek further medical advice before having what likely will be season-ending surgery on his left hip. The 34-year-old Kariya said the operation probably will take place in the next few weeks. An MRI revealed injuries in two spots in the joint area of the left hip, indicating a possible labrum tear.

OUT AGAIN

Rick DiPietro lasted only one game before another injury forced him out of the lineup again. DiPietro, the Islanders’ franchise goalie, has played only four times in New York’s 37 games this season. He returned Friday after a 27-game absence, but a new groin strain forced him to skip the Islanders’ trip to Buffalo on Saturday and he was held out of the lineup again Monday night against the Rangers.

GOALS

Markus Naslund scored one of the New York Rangers’ four goals in a wild third period in which the Rangers and Islanders combined for six goals. Other goal scorers for the Rangers in a 5-4 win were Petr Prucha, Michal Rozsival and Nigel Dawes. Blake Comeau and Mike Comrie tallied for the Islanders. ^STREAKING

The Flames beat Minnesota 2-1 and are 5-0-3 in their last eight games.

EAST-WEST DISCREPANCY

Minnesota dropped to 8-15-1 versus Western Conference opponents with a 2-1 loss to the Flames. The Wild are 9-1-1 versus Eastern teams.

SPEAKING

“It’s funny, you don’t even think about it. I just went in, my body just made the move and made it happen. It’s crazy how sports works like that.”— Calgary’s Eric Nystrom after he used a pretty forehand fake to pull Minnesota goalie Josh Harding to the ice ahead of scoring a go-ahead, short-handed goal that gave the Flames a 2-1 win.
