SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Feb. 24

Philadelphia at Washington (7 p.m. EST). Washington star Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 43rd goal in the Capitals’ 5-2 victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday.

STAR

Monday

— Evgeni Nabokov, Sharks, stopped 29 shots for his fifth shutout of the season and 45th of his career, leading San Jose to a 1-0 victory over Dallas.

SEE YA

The New York Rangers fired coach Tom Renney with 21 games left in the regular season and the team in a deep slump. He was replaced by former Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella, who inherits a team that has lost 10 times in the last 12 games and is in danger of missing the playoffs. The Rangers lost in overtime to Toronto on Sunday night, and are in a fifth-place tie in the Eastern Conference with 69 points—two points ahead of ninth-place Carolina. Tortorella led the Lightning to the Stanley Cup title in 2004 and was let go following last season.

STARTER

Dallas goalie Marty Turco made his 30th consecutive start, stopping 23 shots in a 1-0 loss to San Jose.

SUPER FLYER

Flyers forward Danny Briere, who has missed all but nine games this season because of a groin injury he sustained in December, expects to be back in action this week. Briere had set Wednesday as his target date, but the star center now expects to play in Philadelphia’s game against Montreal on Friday night. He is in the second year of a $52 million, eight-year contract.

SET TO GO

Devils goalie Martin Brodeur is ready to play. The four-time Vezina Trophy winner is waiting for is his first starting assignment since having elbow surgery about four months ago. The Devils have three home games this week, facing Colorado on Thursday, Florida on Saturday and Philadelphia on Sunday. Coach Brent Sutter refused to pick a date for Brodeur’s return, saying he wants to see how the 36-year-old does at practice the next two days.

SIDELINED

Dallas Stars center Mike Modano did not play against the San Jose Sharks because of the flu. He has 14 goals and 23 assists in 58 games this season but has gone 13 games without a goal. He was listed as day-to-day.

SPEAKING

“I wish it hadn’t have come to this, but it did. After the last two or three games it was obvious something had to be done.”—Rangers general manager Glen Sather after firing coach Tom Renney on Monday.
