Buffalo defenseman Craig Rivet ended a 65-game goal drought when he scored in the Sabres’ 3-2 loss at Anaheim on Monday night. It was Rivet’s first goal since Jan. 12, 2008, when he scored for San Jose against Toronto’s Vesa Toskala. Rivet has 46 goals in 777 NHL regular-season games.

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Denis Gauthier was suspended five games without pay for hitting Montreal’s Josh Gorges in the head last Friday. NHL officials said Monday that Gauthier will also have to forfeit more than $56,000, which is based on his average annual salary, to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. He’ll be able to return Feb. 14 against Edmonton. … Pittsburgh Penguins forward Tyler Kennedy was suspended one game for leaving the bench to start a fight with Toronto defenseman Luke Schenn on Saturday night.

Unable to turn around a team that reached the Stanley Cup finals in 2007, Craig Hartsburg was fired as the Ottawa Senators’ coach Monday—just 48 games into a season in which the team has the NHL’s third-worst record and is likely to miss the playoffs for the first time in 13 seasons.
