SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Feb. 3

Washington at New Jersey (7 p.m. EST). Alex Ovechkin and the Southeast Division-leading Capitals, 5-1-1 in their last seven games, visit the Atlantic Division-leading Devils, winners of a season-high eight straight.

STARS

Monday

— Marian Hossa, Red Wings, scored the winner in a shootout after scoring twice in regulation, lifting Detroit to a 4-3 victory over St. Louis and ending a season-high five-game skid.

— Marek Svatos, Avalanche, scored twice to help Colorado end a four-game slide with a 4-3 win over Calgary.

— Jonas Hiller, Ducks, made 21 saves in Anaheim’s 3-2 victory over Buffalo, winning for the third time in four starts in place of All-Star Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

STREAKS

Detroit snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout win over St. Louis on Monday. Despite their struggles, the Red Wings have been effective at home, winning eight of their last nine at Joe Louis Arena. … Calgary had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss at Colorado.

SUDDEN SCORER

Buffalo defenseman Craig Rivet ended a 65-game goal drought when he scored in the Sabres’ 3-2 loss at Anaheim on Monday night. It was Rivet’s first goal since Jan. 12, 2008, when he scored for San Jose against Toronto’s Vesa Toskala. Rivet has 46 goals in 777 NHL regular-season games.

GAME OVER

Colorado improved to 17-0-0 when taking a lead into the third period, beating Calgary 4-3 on Monday night.

STATS

Colorado couldn’t score an empty-net goal in a 4-3 win over Calgary on Monday night, and remained the only team in the league without one. The last team to go an entire season without an empty-net goal was the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005-06.

SHOTS

Detroit and St. Louis matched an NHL low for a first period this season with only five shots on goal. That tied the five shots Los Angeles and Columbus had in the first period on Dec. 6, 2008, according to STATS LLC. The Red Wings, who won 4-3 in a shootout, finished with 21 shots, while the Blues had 33.

BURNED AGAIN

Calgary’s Jarome Iginla scored a goal in the Flames’ 4-3 loss at Colorado on Monday night, giving him 62 points in 71 career games against the Avalanche. It’s the most of any NHL player against the Avalanche since they moved from Quebec.

MILESTONES

Referee Kerry Fraser officiated in his 1,800th NHL game, taking the ice in Colorado’s 4-3 win at home over Calgary on Monday night. … Colorado’s Milan Hejduk scored a power-play goal in the second period, giving him 636 career points and tying him with Anton Stastny for fifth place on the franchise’s career list.

SUSPENDED

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Denis Gauthier was suspended five games without pay for hitting Montreal’s Josh Gorges in the head last Friday. NHL officials said Monday that Gauthier will also have to forfeit more than $56,000, which is based on his average annual salary, to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. He’ll be able to return Feb. 14 against Edmonton. … Pittsburgh Penguins forward Tyler Kennedy was suspended one game for leaving the bench to start a fight with Toronto defenseman Luke Schenn on Saturday night.

SEE YA

Unable to turn around a team that reached the Stanley Cup finals in 2007, Craig Hartsburg was fired as the Ottawa Senators’ coach Monday—just 48 games into a season in which the team has the NHL’s third-worst record and is likely to miss the playoffs for the first time in 13 seasons. Cory Clouston will replace Hartsburg.

SIDELINED

Washington Capitals captain Chris Clark will have surgery on his right wrist this week and is expected to miss the rest of the season. Clark missed Washington’s past two games. His operation is scheduled for Thursday.

SPEAKING

“It doesn’t matter how ugly or pretty it was. We finally ended the losing streak and now we can build on something.”—Detroit’s Marian Hossa after his shootout goal led the Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over St. Louis on Monday night and snapped a season-high five-game skid.
