SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, March 17

Chicago at New Jersey (7 p.m. EDT). Devils goalie Martin Brodeur tries to break a tie with Patrick Roy for the NHL regular-season victory record. Brodeur beat Montreal 3-1 on Saturday night to tie Roy at 551. Brodeur has seven victories in eight games after missing 50 games because of a torn left biceps.

STARS

Monday

— Kari Lehtonen, Thrashers, made a career-high 49 saves to lift Atlanta to a team-record sixth straight win, 5-1 over Washington.

— Joel Ward, Predators, had a goal and an assist in Nashville’s 4-3 victory at Los Angeles.

SHUT DOWN

NHL goal leader Alex Ovechkin, one goal away from 50 this season, was held without a point for the first time in 11 games and the second time in 22 during the Washington Capitals’ 5-1 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday night. The reigning league MVP has 35 points and 22 goals in his last 25 games.

STREAKS

The Atlanta Thrashers beat the Washington Capitals 5-1 on Monday night for their team-record sixth straight win. Atlanta has the fewest home points in the Eastern Conference. … The Nashville Predators, who beat the Kings 4-3 on Monday night, will have a chance to sweep the four-game season series from Los Angeles on March 28 at Nashville. The Kings have never been swept by the Predators since Nashville entered the NHL in 1998-99.

SKATING

Buffalo Sabres No. 1 goalie Ryan Miller has begun skating on his own to test his injured left ankle and is confident he is on track to return to the lineup before the end of the season. Miller said on Monday that he still feels some discomfort when he’s stretching, but he has not had any setbacks during his rehabilitation. … Washington Capitals defenseman Brian Pothier played his first game in more than 14 months Monday night after recovering from a career-threatening concussion. Pothier, an eight-year NHL veteran, was injured when Bruins forward Milan Lucic checked him into the boards on Jan. 3, 2008, in Boston.

SPEAKING

“Certainly as a coaching staff and a management staff, it makes you feel good about your young players and the direction that we are heading. There are still lots of games left. We care about ourselves and we care about each other.”—First-year Atlanta coach John Anderson after the Thrashers stretched their winning streak to a team-record six games with a 5-1 victory Monday night over the Washington Capitals.
