Olympic Heroes in the NHL
By Judd Hall
The NHL is finally out of its two-week hiatus that allowed its pros to make the 2010 Winter Olympics one of the best tournaments the sport has ever seen. Now those same pros return to their respective clubs for Tuesday’s slate of 12 games.
What we’re going to do is look at a pair of contests that showcase some of the players that made big differences in the Gold Medal Game between the United States and Canada.
Sabres at Penguins – 7:35 p.m. EST
The United States will have to wait four years before they get a chance at revenge on the Olympic stage against Canada. Ryan Miller, however, will be looking to make amends for the shot he let get away on Sunday afternoon in Vancouver at Mellon Arena on Tuesday.
One thing is for sure, the Sabres can use anything to get their season back on track. Buffalo has lost six straight games and 10 of their last 12 before the break. While Miller was on the ice during that skid, he did have a .911 save percentage and 2.66 goals against average. The problem for the Sabres has been a lackluster defense and a blue-liner that can make a difference on a power play that is scoring 17.6 percent of the time.
As far as the Penguins are concerned, things are looking up. They are the defending Stanley Cup champion and are fairly secure of making another run at keeping possession of it this season. Plus, they have this guy named Sidney Crosby. All he’s done is win the Hart Trophy, lead them to the Stanley Cup Final twice (winning once) and lead the league in goals with 42. Crosby also just picked up a Gold Medal for Canada after finding an opening against the United States’ Miller in overtime.
That win for his nation could very well spark his professional club to get rolling. Pittsburgh has lost four of its last five games, two of them coming at home. The Pens are in a similar spot as the Sabres in that they need a defenseman that can help add depth to their third line.
While there could be reason to be hopeful for the Sabres after Miller’s performance on the international stage, they haven’t done well away from home. Buffalo is just 14-14 on the road this season, losing seven straight as well.
The Penguins are boasting a decent 18-13 mark at “The Igloo” this season. However, bettors have to know that Pitt is 4-5 in its last nine home tests.
Pittsburgh has dominated the recent series, going 7-3 in the last 10 head-to-head games. The ‘over’ is on a strong 7-1 run as well.
Buffalo has not won a game in Mellon Arena since December 2008, making its record 1-4 in its last five stops in Pitt.
Devils at Sharks – 10:35 p.m. EST
Zach Parise pulled the Americans out of the abyss in the final 25 seconds of the Gold Medal Game with the equalizer against Roberto Luongo. Even though the United States fell short, it doesn’t discount a tournament performance (4 goals, 4 assists, 8 points) that was spectacular.
Parise had done as much as he could with the Devils recently, scoring a goal in his last three games and eight lamp lighters in his last 12 appearances for them. The only problem is nobody has been finding the back of the net for New Jersey. The Devs have scored no more than two goals in eight of their last 11 fixtures. And it should come as no surprise that they were 3-8 in those contests as well.
San Jose isn’t having any problems winning right now since it’s the regular season. The Sharks have gone 10-4 in their last 14 tests. Dany Heatley, who was one of Canada’s best performers in Vancouver (4 goals, 3 assists, 7 points), has 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists) over that stretch. Unfortunately for bettors, the Sharks haven’t given a lot of value to take them on the side as they have been $1.45 or more (risking $145 to win $100) on nine of those matches. Normally you’d take the puck line to get a chance at plus-money, but San Jose won by at least two goals on seven occasions and none in its last five games.
The sportsbooks are putting the Sharks in as $1.45 home faves with a total of 5 ½.
New Jersey has shown itself to be a decent road team overall with a 17-14 mark. However, they have been a team worth fading though as of late with one win in its last 10 spots away from Newark. As road pups, the Devils are 13-6 this year but are on a 0-4 skid.
The Sharks are 19-12 in the HP Pavilion and 6-4 in their last 10 matches. As home faves against Eastern Conference foes, they are 16-2 in their last 18 meetings and 11-7 on the puck line.

Tuesday's Best NHL Bets
Montreal Canadiens at Boston Bruins (-175, 5)
Every Montreal player who participated in the Olympics - with the exception of Jaroslav Halak - was back at practice Sunday. But the Habs may have been happier to welcome a few injured players back into their lineup, such as Benoit Pouliot, Andrei Kostitsyn and Paul Mara.
Head coach Jacques Lemaire decided to keep things light during Saturday’s practice putting together a 3-on-3 scrimmage with one team representing Canada and the other representing the world followed by short track speed skating race.
Montreal is still without leading scorer Mike Cammalleri who spent part of the break in Florida getting treatment on his injured right knee. But even without Cammalleri, the Habs should be a much tougher opponent than the one Boston beat 3-0 at home on Feb. 7.
Pick: Canadiens
Buffalo Sabres at Pittsburgh Penguins (N/A)
As luck would have it, two days after Canada’s big win over the U.S. in the gold medal game, Sidney Crosby and Ryan Miller square off once again, this time in their respective NHL uniforms.
Miller was dominant in net throughout the tournament for the Americans earning the tournament MVP title, but Crosby came out on top, squeezing the puck past Miller in overtime to give Canada a 3-2 victory and a gold medal.
Crosby won’t have much time to come back to reality after such a momentous win and the partying that no doubt ensued. Miller, on the other hand, should be focused and ready to shut down Sid and the rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Miller will fly directly from Vancouver to Pittsburgh Tuesday morning for the Sabres game against the Pens.
