SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, March 3

New Jersey at Toronto (7:30 p.m. EST). New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur has two shutouts in three games since returning from an elbow injury. He has 100 career regular-season shutouts, three short of Terry Sawchuk’s NHL record.

STARS

Monday

— Jesse Joensuu and Bruno Gervais, Islanders. Emergency call-up Joensuu scored in his first NHL game and defenseman Gervais had his first goal in 161 games to lead New York to a 4-2 victory over Colorado.

SADDENED

The Carolina Hurricanes will be without Jussi Jokinen after the forward returned to Finland following the death of his father. General manager Jim Rutherford made the announcement Monday in a statement. There was no timetable given for his return. Jokinen has seven goals and 14 assists in 57 games this season with Tampa Bay and Carolina, which acquired him last month in a trade with the Lightning.

WILD RETURN

Marian Gaborik’s long recovery from hip surgery got a little bit shorter on Monday when he returned to the Twin Cities to get ready to rejoin the Minnesota Wild. The star right wing has missed all but six games this season and had surgery in January to repair a torn labrum and damaged cartilage in his left hip that was causing chronic groin problems. Gaborik spent the next eight weeks in Colorado to begin rehabilitating, and now is back in St. Paul to ramp up his workouts and return to a team that desperately needs his scoring punch.

SIGNING

Andrew Conboy, suspended by Michigan State this season for an attack on a Michigan player, signed a three-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens on Monday. Conboy opted to turn pro with Hamilton of the AHL, Montreal’s top farm team, after he was suspended. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound left wing has one assist and four penalty minutes in seven games with the Bulldogs.

SWAP

The New Jersey Devils added an experienced defenseman two days before the NHL trade deadline, acquiring Niclas Havelid from the Atlanta Thrashers for rookie defenseman Anssi Salmela. Havelid has two goals and 13 assists in 63 games this season. In his ninth NHL season, the 35-year old has career totals of 34 goals and 133 assists in 336 games with Anaheim and Atlanta.

SPEAKING

“I can’t really describe it. Hearing today that I’m going to play and then scoring a goal, it’s a little bit too much.”—Jesse Joensuu after the emergency call-up scored in his first NHL game to help the New York Islanders to a 4-2 win over Colorado on Monday night.
