Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, April 7

Montreal at New York Rangers (7 p.m. EDT). The Rangers are trying to hold off Florida for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

STARS

Monday

— Marian Hossa, Red Wings, scored twice, added an assist, and reached the 40-goal mark for the third time in Detroit’s 4-1 victory at Buffalo.

— Dany Heatley, Senators, netted a pair of goals 38 seconds apart to put visiting Ottawa ahead with 7:59 remaining in the third period en route to a 3-2 win over Montreal.

— Jarome Iginla, Flames, had a goal and an assist in a pivotal 4-1 victory over Los Angeles that gave Calgary sole possession of first place in the Northwest Division—two points ahead of Vancouver.

— Chris Osgood, Red Wings, made 32 saves and tied Dominik Hasek for 10th on the NHL career wins list (389) in leading Detroit past Buffalo 4-1.

SEEKING GOLD

Toronto Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson was picked on Monday to lead the U.S. team at next year’s Vancouver Olympics and at the world hockey championship later this month in Switzerland. Wilson, who guided the Americans to the gold medal at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, also coached the U.S. squad that lost in the quarterfinals at the 1998 Nagano Games.

SIN CITY

The NHL is no closer to moving a team to Las Vegas, despite shifting its annual awards ceremony there for the next three years. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Monday at the Palms Hotel Las Vegas that moving the awards will let the show expand with bigger and better events to celebrate hockey’s top players, and is not an indication that the league is suddenly eyeing the city any closer.

SIDELINED

The Montreal Canadiens were without top defensemen Andrei Markov and Mathieu Schneider for their 3-2 home loss to the Ottawa Senators on Monday night and will be missing them again for a key road matchup in New York against the Rangers on Tuesday. Markov and Schneider were injured in Montreal’s 6-2 victory over the Maple Leafs in Toronto on Saturday night. Schneider has an undisclosed upper body injury while Markov is believed to have injured his right leg.

SPEAKING

“I wish that we had the third goal back, the shot under the arm—probably (goalie Jaroslav) Halak does, too, but (Dany) Heatley is a guy who scores 40 goals every year. He gets them different ways and he got us tonight.”— Canadiens coach Bob Gainey after Montreal allowed a pair of goals to Ottawa’s Dany Heatley 38 seconds apart in the third period that turned a 2-1 lead into a 3-2 loss to the Senators on Monday night.
