Tuesday's Best NHL Bets
By Covers.com

Detroit Red Wings at Buffalo Sabres (-110, 5.5)

It’s been a long time since Todd Bertuzzi was considered a top line forward, but he’s getting a chance to prove his doubters wrong.

Wings head coach Mike Babcock is letting the burly right winger play with two of the league’s best forwards, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.

Bertuzzi got bumped to the No. 1 line primarily because of the injury to Johan Franzen.

Even though Bertuzzi didn’t register a point in Detroit’s win over the Caps on Saturday, Babcock told reporters afterwards that it was the best game he’d seen from Bertuzzi “in a number of years.”

“I think I’m capable of playing with (Datsyuk and Zetterberg),” Bertuzzi told Michigan Live. “It would be nice to get some chemistry with them and try to contribute.”

Detroit got back to its style of play over the weekend holding the explosive Capitals to just 23 shots. Even though they’re on the road against a good Buffalo team, you’ve got to like the Wings priced this low.

Pick: Red Wings

Colorado Avalanche at Toronto Maple Leafs (-135, 6)

What’s the worst job in the NHL? If you said Alex Ovechkin’s barber, you were close but not bang on.

Fans of the Maple Leafs are always hard on players on the team that are slumping, but none more than the starting netminder.

Vesa Toskala is at the very bottom of all major stat categories for goalies and is a big part of why the Buds are still in search of their first win this season. If it were up to the mob mentality of Leaf Nation, Toskala would be run out of town.

But the decision is up to coach Ron Wilson, and although he’s going with Joey MacDonald for Tuesday’s game against the Avs, he insists the starting job still belongs to Toskala.

“Right now Vesa starts and that’s where it ends,” Wilson told the Toronto Star.

The Leafs might not win Tuesday’s match, but you can bet they’ll play better in front of their own net.

Pick: Under

Tips & Trends

Detroit Red Wings at Buffalo Sabres

Red Wings: Detroit has enjoyed great success playing Buffalo. The Red Wings have won 15 of the past 18 times versus the Sabres going 15-1-1 dating back to March of 1996. The Red Wings have averaged 3.77 goals in their last 18 games against the Sabres. Detroit led the league in power play scoring percentage last year at 25.5 percent. This year Detroit is six-for-20 (30 percent) on the power play after four games. The Red Wings have won two straight, both at home after opening with consecutive losses to St. Louis in Stockholm. The Red Wings followed those two defeats to edge Chicago 3-2 on Thursday and then beat Washington on Saturday, 3-2. The Red Wings, though, are 1-5 in their last six games when going up against a team with a winning record. Detroit has dropped its last four road contests. Detroit is 5-2 under in its last seven games.

Top Trends

The Under has cashed in 17 of the Red Wings’ last 22 games versus Northeast Division foes.

Key Injuries

Kirk Maltby (thigh) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 2

Buffalo (-$1.10, O/U 5.5 over -$1.15): Despite scoring just four goals, fewest in the NHL this season, the Sabres are undefeated at 2-0-1. That’s because they surrendered the least amount of goals yielding just three in three games. The Sabres nipped Nashville, 1-0, on Saturday in their last game scoring with 3:25 left on a goal by Mike Grier. Goalie Ryan Miller made 25 saves to record his 13th career shutout. The home team has won four of the last five in the series. The over has turned a profit in seven of the last 10 meetings between the two teams. The over is 5-1 the last six times they’ve met in Buffalo. Veteran defenseman Toni Lydman is expected to play for the first time after missing the first three games because of a hand injury. He’ll take the place of Andrej Sekera, who was injured against Nashville on Saturday.

Top Trends

The Under is 6-2 in Buffalo’s last eight games.

Key Injuries

Andrej Sekera (rib) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total of the Day)
