NHL insider: Hump-day hockey betting report
By DUSTIN NIELSON

Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs

Head To Head

Goals have come in bunches when these two teams have met this season. Just before Christmas the two sides combined for 13 goals in an 8-5 Bruins win. In four meetings this year the two clubs have combined for score six or more three times. The Leafs have been struggling offensively as of late being shutout in back to back home games. The Bruins are coming off a 5-4 shootout loss to the St. Louis Blues.

Banged Up B’s

Boston has Patrice Bergeron, Phil Kessel and Marco Sturm on injury reserve right now. Bergeron, who miss almost all of last season, is sidelined again with a concussion. Kessel’s setback may be the most disappointing. The former first round pick was finally emerging as a star with 24 goals in the first half of the season. Young power forward Milan Lucic is also sidelined and will not return prior to the All-Star Break. In total the Bruins currently have 47 goals and 63 assists sitting on the shelf.

Leafs' Offense Stumbles

The Leafs have been shutout in two consecutive games on home ice. Overall the Buds have dropped 10 of 13.

"If the losses keep happening, it's unacceptable, the last few games we've made a lot of mistakes that we've ended up having the puck put in the back of our net.” Matt Stajan told reporters.

Pogge Time?

Leafs head coach Ron Wilson says that rookie goaltender Justin Pogge will see more action after the All-Star break. Number one goalie Vesa Toskala has struggled this season and seasoned veteran Curtis Jopesh hasn’t been able to contribute when called upon.

St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks

As close as it gets

There aren’t many teams in the NHL this season that the Chicago Blackhawks have had trouble beating, but one of them is their opponent Wednesday night. The Blues have topped the Hawks twice in three meetings this season and all three games needed extra time to resolve. St. Louis won 4-3 in overtime and 4-3 in a shootout before the Hawks were able to bounce back with a 2-1 overtime win last weekend.

The Future Is Bright

The list of young stars on both the Blues and Hawks is impressive. These two clubs, along with the Coyotes, have the potential to be the future powerhouse’s of the NHL’s Western Conference.

“We’re a young team and sometimes inexperience kicks in a little bit,” St. Louis defenseman Jeff Woywitka said. “At a young age, we’ve got to learn how to win.”

Last Second Heroics

The young Blues proved on Monday night against the Bruins that a game’s not over until the final horn. David Backes batted a puck out of the air and into the back of the net with less than one second to play. The Blues ended up beating the Bruins in a shootout. After the game Backes gave credit where credit was due.

"I've got to thank my baseball coaches from when I was young ... Joe Therrien and Dave Iverson.”

The come from behind shootout win over the Bruins is exactly the type of result that could propel the infant Blues into a hot streak.

Kane Hits Slump

Chicago leading scorer Pat Kane is having trouble finding the back of the net. Kane hasn’t scored in the past 11 games.

"If you look throughout the games, I think I've had a Grade A opportunity probably in every one," Kane said. "I just have to bury my chances and pick it up for the team."

The Million Dollar Goal

The Hawks only scored one goal on Monday night against Minnesota but it ended up being worth one million dollars for a lucky fan. An Illinois Lottery promotion awards one lucky fan one million bucks if a Chicago player scores at the 10-minute mark of the second period. Martin Havlat was able to find the back of the Wild net exactly half way through the hockey game.
