Wednesday's Best NHL Bets

Washington Capitals at Montreal Canadiens (+145, 6)

The heaps of snow that fell on the city of Washington over the weekend didn’t cool down the red-hot Capitals. Washington, on a 14-game winning streak, came back from a 4-1 deficit to beat a tired Penguins squad 5-4 in overtime Sunday afternoon. Alex Ovechkin earned his first hat trick of the season and also assisted on Mike Knuble’s overtime winner.

“It's always nice to win when you are a little bit frustrated in the first period,” Ovechkin told the Washington Post. “The game didn't go well for us right away.”

The Capitals benefited from a questionable call when Brooks Orpik was sent to the penalty box for high-sticking Alexander Semin in the face. A few seconds later, Knuble sneaked the puck under goalie Marc-André Fleury, mounting the Penguins’ frustration.

“He (Semin) sells it all the time,” Orpik told the Washington Post. “The kid’s a baby. I’ve got zero respect for the kid. If it was a penalty, it was a penalty. I don’t know. But the kid does that all game long. It’s tough to lose on that.”

The Capitals probably won’t have to resort to such antics to beat an ailing Canadiens team who is still dealing with the news that Bob Gainey has stepped down as the club’s General Manager.

Pick: Capitals

Edmonton Oilers at Anaheim Ducks (-250, 5.5)

After winning two straight games to begin the month of February, the Edmonton Oilers are back to their old ways. Edmonton has lost its last three games and a franchise-high 10 straight on the road, most recently falling 6-1 to the Phoenix Coyotes Monday.

“We had our opportunities, they were there,” Oilers’ winger Ethan Moreau told the Canadian Press. “We could've had four more goals.”

But Edmonton hasn’t been able to turn these opportunities into actual goals. The team has been outscored 13-3 in the first three contests of its current five-game road trip.

The Anaheim Ducks have enjoyed a lot more success, especially at home where they have won 10 in a row. Nevertheless, Anaheim may be lacking offensive firepower with center Ryan Getzlaf listed as doubtful after suffering an ankle injury in Monday night’s win over the Los Angeles Kings.

“Hopefully, he won't be out too long,” defenseman Scott Niedermayer told ESPN.com. “I don't have to say what he means to this team and what he does for us, so hopefully it's not bad.”

Getzlaf has racked up 55 points in 57 games with the Ducks so far this season.

Pick: Under

Jackets Winning Without a Hitch
By Ari Baum-Cohen

Capping the Caps: Totals edition

Washington is the highest scoring team in the league, averaging 3.9 goals a game.

The Capitals have a 31-22-6 over/under record, including a 13-5-3 over/under stretch during their last 21 games and, as Ted Starkey of the Washington Times points out, are averaging 4.79 goals per game during their 14-game winning streak.

Washington’s over/under record is 19-11-1 with Jose Theodore between the pipes, 5-4-4 with Michal Neuvirth and 7-7-1 with Semyon Varlamov in net.

The Capitals have an over/under record of 6-5-0 when the total is set at 5.5 goals, 20-17-6 at 6 goals and have gone over the total all five times the total has been set at 6.5 goals.

Is there a chance we could see a total of 7 this season?

Quick, who leads the NHL in wins?

While that could be a question, it is actually an incomplete sentence.

Jonathan Quick, who leads the NHL in wins, has won nine of his last ten starts.

The 24 year-old netminder has led the Los Angeles Kings to a 36-20-3 record, fifth best in the Western Conference.

The Kings have been winning by protecting leads and winning close games.

As Helene Elliot of the Los Angeles Times points out, the Kings are 20-8-3 in one goal games and 22-0-0 when leading after two periods.

"They play with a lot of energy, and they're playing a simple game," Anaheim Ducks winger Todd Marchant told the Los Angeles Times.

Ward-ing off defeat

The Carolina Hurricanes have been playing better recently, winning six of their last eight games.

The Canes received some bad news though, as goaltender Cam Ward could miss extended time with a back injury.

"After a couple of weeks, they'll have a better understanding of his condition," Carolina GM Jim Rutherford told the Carolina News Observer. "They'd like to see how it settles down, let him rest, then go from there."

Carolina is 14-21-5 in games started by Cam Ward this season and 7-9-2 when Ward does not start.

Without a Hitch

According to Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch, recently fired coach Ken Hitchcock “had the young Jackets confused by mixed messages, fearful of making mistakes and mentally exhausted.”

Arace calls interim coach Claude Noel, “the perfect antidote” to the iron-fisted Hitchcock.

"There are times in your life and in hockey when you have to let your mind go free. On days off, that's when you relieve the stress,” Noel told reporters. “You see me (Sunday morning), and I'll be in a full lather laughing, and there won't be anyone around me."

"He keeps us calm," Jackets forward Jake Voracek told the Columbus Dispatch. "If there's a turnover or something, that happens in hockey."

The Columbus Blue Jackets have responded well to the firing of Coach Ken Hitchcock, winning two games in a row following a 10-21-7 stretch.

On the schedule

Thursday Feb 11 – Edmonton Oilers at Los Angeles Kings

The Oilers have lost 10 games in a row on the road (0-10-0) and end their five-game road trip with the second half of a back-to-back against a Los Angeles Kings that has won nine of 10.

Thursday Feb 11 – San Jose Sharks at Detroit Red Wings

The Sharks have won nine in a row on the road but have to play on back-to-back nights and three games in four nights. Game five of San Jose’s six game road trip is against Detroit - a team they are 0-2-1 against this season.

Saturday Feb 13 – Atlanta Thrashers at Chicago Blackhawks

The Atlanta Thrashers play Wednesday in Colorado, travel to Minnesota on Friday then travel to Chicago to play a well-rested Blackhawks team Saturday.

Wednesday's Ice Plays
By Judd Hall

As the Olympic Torch begins its home stretch into Vancouver, NHL bettors and fans alike know the league’s break is fast approaching. That doesn’t mean we’ll be without some decent games this week. Wednesday’s card has the best teams in the Eastern and Western Conference

San Jose at Columbus – 7:05 p.m. EST

The Sharks continue to do their best impression of the Indianapolis Colts as they rampage the regular season. San Jose is currently six points better than the Blackhawks in the Western Conference. Bettors have enjoyed the Sharks so far on their six-game road trip before the Olympic break, winning the first three tests.

During this current win streak, San Jose has actually been outshot 86-109. While that number sounds impressive, we have to remember that they faced off against the Blues, Predators and Maple Leafs – two of the lesser clubs in the NHL. What could prove problematic for the Sharks is that their penalty killing unit gave up three goals on 10 chances during that stretch. Two of those special teams scores effectively killed lucrative puck line plays for gamblers.

Columbus has pretty much resigned itself as a trade partner after dumping Ken Hitchcock so he could resume his career as a Bob Keeshan impersonator. There is some positives for the Jackets with Claude Noel behind the bench as they’ve won his first two games as head coach. The most immediate change has been on the defensive side of the ice for the Blue Jackets…especially Steve Mason. The Calder Trophy winning netminder has allowed just one goal in his last two starts, both wins. Mason hadn’t won back-to-back starts since the middle of October.

While fans might be happy with Noel running the show, they must remember that the CBJ haven’t really shown anything yet. This is a team that can’t put together a full 60 minutes. Look no further than a .720 winning percentage when leading after two periods of play to rank 28th in the league.

Most sportsbooks have installed San Jose as a $1.45 road “chalk” with a total of 5 ½.

There is a pretty good reason to take the Sharks here since they are the best road team in the NHL with a 20-6-2 mark away from the HP Pavilion.

The recent history for this series has been dominated by the home teams to the tune of an 8-2 record over the last 10 games.

While the Sharks come into this game after playing on Monday, Columbus hasn’t taken to the ice since Feb. 6. The Blue Jackets are 4-1 in home games after taking three days off.

San Jose has gone 10-1 when he’s a road “chalk” since the start of last season.

Washington at Montreal – 7:35 p.m. EST

There is no doubt that the Capitals are a good team. But 2010 has been very, very good for them. Washington extended its franchise-best winning streak to 14 games after taking down the Penguins 5-4 in overtime as a $1.75 home favorite on Super Bowl Sunday. While it was important for the Caps to get Alex Ovechkin to score in that game (hat trick, one assist), it’s the fact they know how to fight back into a game. The Pens jumped out to a 2-0 then a 4-2 lead after the first two periods. Yet, Washington leads the league with a 15-6-2 record in tilts where they trail first.

Montreal is also coming into this contest after playing on Feb. 7. The only difference for the Habs is that they fell to Boston as $1.10 home faves, 3-0. The Canadiens actually outshot the B’s 36-27. However, most of those shots were contested and never really forced Tuukka Rask into making difficult stops.

Most of the betting shops have posted the Caps as $1.65 road favorites with a total of six.

There shouldn’t be much shock over that line since Washington is just three wins shy of Pittsburgh’s record streak of 17 back in the 1992-93 campaign.

The Capitals are no stranger to being road favorites as it has happened 20 times this season. What is surprising is that they are 15-5 in those matches. Don’t look towards them as a puck line wager in this spot since they’re 8-12 in that situation.

Montreal hasn’t been all that good as a home pup, as evidenced by a 6-9 mark in that position this year. The Canadiens have shown to be worth back to lose by less than two goals though by going 13-2 against the puck line. That would be costly in this contest at minus-200 (risk $200 to win $100).

The head-to-head meetings have leaned towards the Red Army with the Capitals going 7-3 in the last 10 games.
