On the Ice - Wednesday
By Judd Hall

We’re just a few days away from that dreaded day for men, Valentine’s Day. Normally we’d just go with a box of chocolates and some cheap flowers. But this year, let’s get those women folk something nice. Let’s get a little cash for those gifts from Wednesday’s card in the NHL.

Washington Capitals at New York Rangers – 7:00 p.m. EST

I know there are a lot of games left in the regular season, but the Capitals sure do look like they’ve wrapped up the Southeast Division championship. Washington (34-16-4, 72 points) has won four of its last five games to give itself a 13 point cushion in the division. The Caps’ most recent victory came as $2.00 home favorites against Florida, 3-1, on Feb. 7. They have covered the puck line in three of their last four games at the Verizon Center.

Defenseman Mike Green put up two goals in the win to extend his goal streak to six straight matches. Meanwhile, Jose Theodore stuffed 20 of the Panthers 21 shots. Theodore looks to be heating up as he’s won three of his last four games. His goals against average in those three wins is 1.67.

Green’s scoring streak is nothing to scoff at, you know. He’s the first blueliner in the Capitals’ history to do this and the first in the league since Ray Bourque did it with the Bruins in 1984. Now can an offensive minded defender win the Norris Trophy? Who knows. What I do know is that Washington’s offense still goes through Alex Ovechkin, who has lit the lamp six times in as many games.

The Rangers are now officially on the Sean Avery resurfacing/Tom Renney firing watch. Avery was just allocated to New York’s (29-20-5, 63 points) American Hockey League affiliate, Hartford Wolf Pack. But he is still property of Dallas until they try to recall him. At that time, he’d have to clear waivers.

As for Renney, his Blueshirts have dropped five consecutive decisions and currently sit in sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Their latest defeat came as $1.30 road ‘dogs against New Jersey, 3-0, last Monday night. The games really haven’t been close for the Rangers as they’ve failed to cover the puck line in four of their last five fixtures.

New York’s biggest issue is that they have no attack: Scott Gomez has just two points during this skid, Aaron Voros has been knocked down to the fourth line and team scoring leader Nikolai Zherdev has visited the red light district three times since the start of the New Year.

Most betting shops have set up the Caps as $1.35 road faves with a total of 5 ½. It’s the first time that the Rangers have been tabbed as home pups all season. Washington is giving bettors great value to win by at least two goals with a puck line of plus-210 (risk $100 to win $210).

While the line makes sense given how both sides are playing, Washington will have to buck a trend they’ve had in Gotham. That’s because the Capitals are 1-7 in their last eight matches at Madison Square Garden. But they have won six straight tilts against Atlantic Division squads. And the Caps have won five straight against the ‘Shirts.

New York has seen the ‘under’ go 8-1 in its last nine games against Eastern Conference foes. And they’ve lost four straight to teams from the East.

Montreal Canadiens at Edmonton Oilers – 10:00 p.m. EST

Montreal (29-19-6, 64 points) is in its own personal Hell right now as they’ve lost six straight road games and eight of its last 10 this season. The road part stings the most as the Habs are in the midst of a six-game trek away from the Bell Centre. They started this trip on a sour note as the Canadiens fell to Calgary on Feb. 9 as $1.35 road ‘dogs, 6-2.

You can’t deny that it was a blowout, but the Habs did carry a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. But the Flames outshot Montreal in the second period 20-4 and it was all downhill from that point on.

While you can definitely blame Montreal’s offense for the skid, it’s Carey Price that should shoulder the burden most. Price has dropped six of his eight games since returning from an injured ankle. He’s stopping just 87 percent of the shots fired his way to go along with a GAA of 3.49. Not exactly the best netminder in the game at the moment.

The Oilers haven’t exactly been world beaters recently, dropping four of their last five tilts. Edmonton (26-23-4, 56 points) fell to the Wild on Feb. 8 as a $1.55 road pup, 3-2. Even though the record doesn’t show it, the Oilers have been quite competitive in their past five games…just can’t score to save their lives.

That scoring deficiency is evident given that they’ve lit the lamp just nine times since the beginning of February. And anytime you score so few goals it magnifies any mistakes you make on defense. Dwayne Roloson stopped 92 percent of the shots he faced this month with a 2.99 GAA. Pretty reasonable numbers if you ask me.

The betting shops have made the Oilers slight $1.25 home favorites with the total coming in at 5 ½. You can take Edmonton on the puck line for a plus-225 return (risk $100 to win $225).

Edmonton hasn’t been the best to back at home this year when favored, going just 12-11 as a home “chalk.” The ‘under’ is 7-4 for the Oilers in their last 11 home contests.

Montreal has seen the ‘over’ go 5-1-1 in its last seven road matches.

The ‘over’ has hit in the last four head-to-head meetings of these squads when at Rexall Place.
