STARS
Tuesday
— Martin Brodeur, Devils, earned his 552nd career win, passing childhood idol and Hall of Famer Patrick Roy, in New Jersey’s 3-2 win over Chicago.
— Evgeni Malkin, Penguins, tied a career high with five points to surpass 100 for the second consecutive season in Pittsburgh’s 6-2 victory over Atlanta.
— Johan Franzen and Henrik Zetterberg, Red Wings, scored 1:32 apart in the third period to lift Detroit to a 3-2 win over Philadelphia.
— John Mitchell, Maple Leads, scored in regulation and the shootout of Toronto’s 4-3 win against Tampa Bay.
— Brendan Bell, Senators, scored twice in Ottawa’s 4-2 comeback victory over Buffalo.
THE BEST
With the final seconds ticking off the clock, Martin Brodeur saw the shot leave the stick of Chicago forward Troy Brouwer, kicked out his right pad and watched the puck head to the corner. Within seconds, the buzzer sounded and Brodeur stood alone as the NHL’s winningest goaltender with 552 career victories. Childhood idol and Hall of Famer Patrick Roy was now behind him.
PERFECT 10
Vancouver set a franchise record with its 10th straight home win, beating Dallas 4-2 Tuesday night to move into a tie with slumping Chicago for fourth place in the tight Western Conference playoff race. Vancouver’s streak, which broke the mark set in 1992, started right after the Canucks lost nine straight at home. They are 15-3-1 overall since that skid ended.
WHAT TIME IS IT? FIVE TO ONE
Ottawa took the season series 5-1 from Buffalo with a 4-2 comeback win on Tuesday night. The Sabres, who blew an early 2-0 lead, are just three points out of playoff position.
SPEAKING
“It’s definitely harder than I thought. These basketball players, it’s only a little net. This was a big net. I had help from a couple of my teammates.”— Martin Brodeur, who cut out part of the net from his 552nd career victory that gave him the NHL record, surpassing Patrick Roy.
