PGA Championship Opening Betting Odds

The 2009 PGA Championship is the only major championship remaining on the golf schedule and it is set to take place on Thursday, Aug. 13 at Hazeltine in Chaska, Minn.

The event may be nearly a month away, but odds are out and the opening lines are no surprise, as Tiger Woods is the early favorite at 2/1 according to the online sports book Sports Interaction.

Other short odds for the PGA Championship are Phil Mickelson (14/1), Jim Furyk (25/1), Lee Westwood (25/1), Sergio Garcia (28/1), and Kenny Perry (28/1).

Woods is coming off one of his worst major performances to date, missing the cut at the British Open this past weekend, which was just the second time Woods has missed the cut at a major championship as a professional. Woods is 0-for-3 on majors this year, but since 2005, Woods has won at least one major championship each year. Woods is a four-time PGA Championship winner, with his most recent coming in 2007. Woods did finish runner up to Rich Beem in the 2002 PGA Championship, which also took place at Hazeltine.

Mickelson missed the British Open last weekend to be with his wife, who is recovering from breast cancer surgery. In this year’s majors, Mickelson has placed fifth (Masters) and tied for second (U.S. Open). Mickelson is the 2005 PGA Championship winner, and finished seventh in last year’s event.

Furyk finished ninth at the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine, but has not finished better than 18th at the event since. Westwood is coming off a third place finish at the British Open but he has never finished better than 15th at the PGA Championship.

Garcia has finished second in two PGA Championships and has four top 10 finishes in the event, including finishing 10th in the 2002 event at Hazeltine. Perry has three top 10 finishes in the PGA Championship. Perry decided to skip out on major events in 2007 and 2008 to focus on making the Ryder Cup team, which he did. The change in directions helped Perry rebound and put him back in the world rankings. This year, Perry finished second at the Masters and has followed it up by making the cut in both the U.S. Open and the British Open.
