Kentucky Derby Overview:

The Kentucky Derby is held annually in Louisville, Kentucky and is a Grade I, one and a quarter race for three-year old thoroughbred horses. It always commences on the first May of the New Year and is the concluding event to a two-week-long festival. It’s rich in history and tradition, and is highly regarded as one of the most prestigious sporting events in the U.S. It’s the first jewel in the Triple Crown and offers the largest purse of any thoroughbred race at $2,000,000.

The very first Kentucky Derby was won by jockey Oliver Lewis and his thoroughbred “Arisides” in 1875 with a time of 2:37.75. The fastest time every recorded at the Kentucky Derby was in 1973, when “Secretariat” and jockey Ron Turcotte recorded a time of 1:59.40. That time was almost eclipsed in 2001 by “Monarchos” and jockey Jorge F. Chavez, who won the derby with a time of 1:59:97.

Last year, Mine That Bird came out of nowhere as a 50/1 long shot to win the Kentucky Derby, beating favorites Dunkirk and Pioneerof the Nile, who were both 4/1 to win.
