In the Ryder Cup, the United States and Europe each fields a team of 12. The teams will compete against one another for three days with the team acquiring more points winning the Ryder Cup. In the event of a tie, the previous winner retains the Cup.

On Friday and Saturday the teams will compete in four matches of alternate shot between a team of two and four matches of best ball, where the top score between the two golfers on the same team will be matched up against the best score of the opposing team. Each match is under match play format and one point is up for grabs. A tie gives a ½ point to each team. On Sunday, 12 individual match play events take place.

The captains of each team select the pairings for Friday and Saturday and also select the order of which golfers will play when on Sunday.

Eurpope is considered the favorite to win according to oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL. The European team has a betting line of -188 while the U.S. has a line of +138.

Europe has the home-field edge in the event and is captained by Colin Montgomerie, a veteran of Ryder Cup play. Europe has a team of Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Ross Fisher, Francesco Molinari, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Peter Hanson, Edoardo Molinari, Luke Donald, and Padraig Harrington. The team features six golfers making their first Ryder Cup appearance.

The United States is captained by Corey Pavin. The team consists of Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton, Matt Kuchar, Zach Johnson, Tiger Woods, Stewart Cink and Rickie Fowler. Five members of the team are making their first Ryder Cup appearance.

Europe has won three of the last four Ryder Cup events and also won the last three events on European soil. These trends play into the odds favoring the European team.
