2012 Wyndham Championship Odds: Dufner & Simpson Favored By Oddsmakers

GREENSBORO, NC (TheSpread) – One event remains prior to the FedEx Cup Playoffs and that is this week’s Wyndham Championship. Here is a look at the odds to win this event.
According to oddsmakers, both Jason Dufner and Webb Simpson are the favorites in this event, as each has 12/1 odds to win this tournament, while Carl Pettersson has 18/1 odds to win.
Dufner is ninth in the world rankings. He has two wins this year and has placed in the top 10 in five of his last eight events. Dufner missed the cut in this tournament last year and placed 34th back in 2010.
Simpson is the defending champion of this tournament. He is currently fifth in the world rankings, but he has missed the cut in three of his last six events. Simpson did win the U.S. Open this year, his lone victory of the season.
Pettersson won this event back in 2008 and he also finished fourth in last year’s tournament. Pettersson is 32nd in the world rankings and coming off a third-place finish in the PGA Championship. It was his first top 10 in nine events.
The Wyndham Championship takes place from Thursday, August 16 and will run through Sunday, August 19 from the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. For complete odds for each golfer to win the Wyndham Championship, see below.

Wyndham Championship Preview and Picks

The 2012 PGA Majors season is complete following a runaway win by Rory McIlroy at the PGA Championship. It capped off a season with four different winners in the majors for the fourth consecutive year. McIlroy also snapped a streak of 16 different majors winners as he backed up his 2011 U.S. Open victory with his second major. We now have one more stop during the regular season before the PGA Tour Playoffs begin and the quest for the FedEx Cup.
This week the tour heads to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship. As mentioned, this is the final event for the FedEx Cup run making this the last shot to earn points. Sedgefield is night and day compared to the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island as it is shorter and will certainly have a lot less wind. The most important aspect this week is hitting fairways so while GIR is important, the first shot is the key. Sedgefield ranked the second easiest par 70 on tour last year.
Things could change this year however. While accuracy will be a big factor in determining the winner, putting could take center stage. We all know putting is key to winning but Sedgefield had every one of its greens redone just three months ago as it switched from Bentgrass to Bermuda and that will make the greens not only faster but it will make the subtle undulations more prominent and tougher to recognize. Therefore, an all around game will be important this week.
Following the final Major and with the playoffs on deck, the field is light on star quality but it will be made up for in drama as players vie for the top 125 spots in FedEx points to advance. There are plenty of big names that are still on the outside looking in including Davis Love III, Y.E. Yang, John Daly and Camilo Villegas. There are also plenty of other players that not only need to get into the top 125 to advance to the playoffs but they need to keep fighting for their 2013 cards.
The defending champion is Webb Simpson (+1,200) and he is the co-favorite this week. Winning last year could provide a much needed spark because he took a month off after the Greenbrier Classic to spend time with his family following the birth of his second child. He came back last week and missed the cut at the PGA Championship.
Jason Dufner (+1,200) is the other co-favorite and he is in much better shape with those odds. Even though he is coming off a disappointing T27 last week at Kiawah Island, he still has five tops tens in his last eight starts including two wins and a runner-up. He has not missed a cut since his opening event at the Sony this year.
Brandt Snedeker (+2,500) has a win under his belt already this year so he is certainly capable. He has been up and down of late due to some slight injuries but he is a past champion here, albeit on a different course, but since the move to Sedgefield he has a T8 in 2010 and a T5 in 2009. His strong putting could be the difference here.
David Toms (+3,000) is not a long hitter but that has not hurt him in the past as he hasn't finished outside the top 25 here in the past three years including his runner-up finish two years ago. One bad round hurt him at the PGA Championship and prior to that he had a T4 at the U.S. Open and a T8 at Bridgestone so he is still in great form.
Tim Clark (+3,000) is finally healthy and his golf game is showing it as he followed up a T15 at the RBC Canadian Open with a T11 last week at the PGA Championship. Like Toms, he is not a long hitter but this course sets up well as proven back in 2008 where he finished T6, the first year the event returned to Sedgefield.
Blake Adams (+5,000) will be the longshot pick this week. While he hasn't sniffed a victory yet this year, he is coming off his best finish of the season with a T7 at the PGA Championship and has four other top 25's in his prior eight starts. He has played here in each of the last two years and made the cut both times including a T30 last year.
