2014 PGA RBC Canadian Open Odds To Win: Three Golfers Favored

MONTREAL, Quebec (TheSpread) – The 2014 PGA RBC Canadian Open is the next event up on the PGA Tour. Here is a look at the odds to win this event.
According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar each have 12/1 odds to win this event while Graeme McDowell has 16/1 odds.
Johnson is 15th in the world rankings. He finished 12th at the British Open last week. He has six top 10s this year, but no victories. He finished tied for second in this event last year.
Furyk is a two-time winner of this event, last winning in 2007. He is currently 10th in the world rankings and coming off a fourth-place finish at the British Open. He has six top 10s this year, but no wins.
Kuchar is seventh in the current world rankings. He is in a bit of a funk by his standards, as he has placed outside the top 10 in five straight events. He does have one win this year. He finished second in this event last year.
McDowell is 16th in the world rankings. He finished ninth in the British Open and has one win to his credit this year. He came in 74th in this event last year.
The 2014 PGA RBC Canadian Open takes place from July 24-27 from Royal Montreal Blue Course. For a look at the odds to win this golf tournament, see below.

Tour heads to Montreal

The PGA Tour heads north of the border this week for the RBC Canadian Open. This tournament was once widely regarded as one of the most prestigious events of the year but has lost favor in recent years and is now sandwiched between three big events (British Open, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, PGA Championship).
As a result, just two top-10 players (Matt Kuchar and JimFuryk) and four others from the top-25 (Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Charl Schwartzel, Luke Donald) in the World Golf rankings will be amongst the field this weekend. Surprisingly, that places just three Americans out of the 13 from the top-25 in this tourney.
Brandt Snedeker will attempt to defend his title this week as last season he had an easy three-stroke victory where 10 of the top 11 players were from the United States.
Since 1995, American-born players have won 16-of-19 times at this event, so let’s take a look at some golfers who could keep the U.S. dominance going, and a few who will try to earn a victory from other parts of the world.
Golfers to Watch
Jim Furyk (23/2): Furyk is an obvious choice here with all his success he has had in this tournament in the past. He won back-to-back times back in 2006 and 2007, and had a ninth-place finish at the event last year. Furyk has not slowed down in 2014 either, and as a 44-year-old has made the cut in every tournament on the season while finishing as the runner-up in two tournaments (Wells Fargo Championship and The PLAYERS Championship); putting him in 14th place on the FedEx Cup leaderboard. His accurate driver (70.3%, 9th on tour) combined with amazing scrambling (68.7%, best on tour) has earned him 21 straight made cuts, and he should be eyeing his 17th PGA Tour victory this week.
Graeme McDowell (15/1): McDowell has played in just 14 tournaments this year (12 on PGA Tour, 2 on European Tour) and has done very well, winning once on the European Tour and putting together nine top-10 finishes between the two. He placed 9th this past week at The British Open and has been playing great golf lately due to his tremendous putting (1.006 strokes gained, best on tour). McDowell's momentum this year should put him in the running to take home the trophy this weekend.
Dustin Johnson (23/2): Johnson has been having a great year, as he ranks third in the FedEx Cup standings with top-12 finishes at the last two majors -- fourth at the U.S. Open and 12th at the British Open Championship. These were big performances, as he did not do well in the middle part of the season. Johnson has a huge drive (311.3 yards per, 2nd on tour) and uses those big shots to hit plenty of greens in regulation (68.5%, 18th on tour), which should both help him improve on his runner-up performance here in 2013.
William McGirt (60/1): McGirt, just like Johnson, tied for second-place here last year with a score of 13-under and also was the runner-up in 2012, as he lost by just one stroke. He has one of the better putting strokes (.380 strokes gained putting, 21st on tour) and has been able to parlay that into five top-25 finishes this year. This tournament has eluded him now for a few years and would be the fitting venue for him to earn his first career PGA Tour event.
David Hearn (40/1): The Canadian-born player has made eight cuts in his past nine events and has posted three top-30 performances in that time; including placing sixth at The PLAYERS Championship back in May. He ranks in the top-30 in both driving accuracy (66.3%) and strokes gained putting (.350), and should certainly be pumped to play in front of his native Canadians.

We follow up an exciting Open Championship, with Rory McIlroy winning wire-to-wire for his third leg of golf's Grand Slam, with the RBC Canadian Open this week from Montreal, Quebec. This is always one of the more difficult tournaments on tour to breakdown because of the constant venue changes. The Canadian Open has been around for over a century and in that span, 37 different courses have played host. This year it returns to Royal Montreal Golf Club for the 10th time.
Royal Montreal Golf Club is a par 70 that reaches 7,153 yards which is actually 18 yards shorter than the last time it hosted a professional event, the 2007 President's Cup. The Canadian Open was last played here in 2001 where Scott Verplank posted a -14 and while the length has gone up close to 300 yards since then, it should still be benign and low scores will be present. It is a ball strikers course with cut down rough so we should see plenty of birdies over the course of the week.
With the Open Championship being played last week, the field becomes watered down this week. There are 24 players entered that played Hoylake last week so there could be some fatigue for those. Only five of the top 20 players in the OWGR are teeing it up this week with only one of those residing in the top five, Matt Kuchar. He is one of the favorites this week, along with Dustin Johnson and Jim Furyk both of which were in the mix at the Open Championship last week.
Graham DeLaet (+2,000) is the favorite Canadian this week and while he has not been at the top of his game of late, he is still a threat. While no Canadian has won his national open since Pat Fletcher in 1954, DeLaet has the tools to break that streak, namely the fact that he leads the PGA Tour in ball striking makes him a horse for the course.
Charley Hoffman (+3,000) has made 12 straight cuts which is tied for the 6th longest streak on tour so we will see him around and he has the game to compete on this course. Included in that cuts streak are a pair of top fives highlighted by a T3 at the Quicken Loans National just two starts back. He is fourth on tour in birdies.
One player that has fallen off the radar is Carl Pettersson (+6,000) but in a light field, he is the type of player that could surprise. He has made five straight cuts after missing the cut in nine of his first 18 events and included in this stretch are two of his three top tens, a T3 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic and a T7 at the Travelers.
Robert Garrigus (+6,500) has been all over the place this year but he tends to bounce back well. He missed the cut at the John Deere Classic in his last start which followed up a T11 at the Quicken Loans National, his fourth top 12 of the season. He had a wrist injury a month ago but two weeks off will benefit him here.
Chad Campbell (+9,500) is our big longshot pick. He has not won since 2007 but he is actually playing well this year despite not many great finishes. He leads the tour in greens hit and he is ninth in ball striking so this is no doubt his type of track. Two of his three best finishes have been in two of his last three starts including a T7 at the Travelers.
