2014 PGA The Barclays Odds To Win: Rory McIlroy Favored

PARAMUS, NJ (TheSpread) – The FedEx Cup Playoffs get underway this week with The Barclays. Here is a look at the odds to win this week’s golf tournament.
According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, Rory McIlroy is favored to win this week, as he has 4/1 odds. Other short odds to win are Adam Scott (14/1) and Henrik Stenson (16/1).
McIlroy is the No. 1 player in the world rankings and currently riding a three-event win streak, which includes two majors. He has 11 tops 10s and four wins on the year. He finished 19th in this event last year.
Scott is the defending champion of this event. He is currently No. 2 in the world rankings behind McIlroy. Scott has one win on the year to go along with eight top 10s.
Stenson is third in the world rankings. He is the defending FedEx Cup champion, but is seeking his first win of the year. He has seven top 10s in 2014.

The Barclays is the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs in which the top 125 players in the standings meet up in a high stakes competition where points are multiplied by five. A strong showing here can vault someone lower in the standings to future playoff tourneys. This event will be played at Ridgewood Country Club (a par-71, 7,319-yard course) in Paramus, NJ, for the third time in the past seven years. The past two events both went into a playoff as Vijay Singh (2008) and Matt Kuchar (2010) came away the victors, while Adam Scott won this event last year in Jersey City.
Rory McIlroy has been a dominant force of late, winning each of the past three tournaments he’s played (British Open, Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship), all of which were against top fields, and he will certainly be the man to beat heading into this week. Let’s take a look at a few players who could come out ahead at The Barclays.
Rory McIlroy: McIlroy has been on a historic run lately and has looked unbeatable against the best players in the world. He has ice in his veins when it comes to the end of tourneys and has placed in the top-10 in nine of his 13 PGA Tour events. He is massive off the tee (310.7 yards per, 3rd on tour) and has hit 68.9% of greens in regulation (9th on tour) leading to the second-best scoring average (68.87). McIlroy is playing much better than anyone else out there and it will be tough to stop this one-man wrecking ball at any point in the near future.
Adam Scott: McIlroy may have passed Scott for the No. 1 ranking the world, but it was more because of the dominance of the aforementioned Irishman than his own play. Scott has not placed worse than 15th in any of his past six tournaments, with five of them ending in a single-digit finish. Scott has been the best player on tour on par-5’s, scoring a birdie or better 56.1% of the time due to his solid putting (.522 strokes gained putting, 12th on tour) and has not missed a cut in 39 straight events. Scott will undoubtedly be competitive this week and is a solid bet to take the trophy home again.
Sergio Garcia: Garcia has been at the top of his game this year and somehow has not grabbed a win despite finishing in the top-3 five times over his 13 PGA Tour events. He sandwiched three straight runner-up performances between poor starts at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship while being the most consistent player with the best scoring average (68.86) and fourth-most greens hit in regulation (69.9%). Garcia has not won since the summer of 2012, but he clearly is among the best in the field and should make some noise come Sunday.
Jimmy Walker: Walker started the year out with a flurry of victories, coming away victorious in three of the first 13 events. He was the leader in the FedEx Cup standings up until this recent run by McIlroy, and maintained that lead due to finishing in the top-10 in four of his past seven events; including placing seventh last week at the PGA Championship and ninth at the U.S. Open. Walker is one of the best putters (.712 strokes gained, 7th on tour) and that should vault him to the top of the leaderboard this week.
Kevin Chappell: Chappell has not played many high stakes tournaments in his career, competing in just six majors over the past four years, but he has done well with a 13th-place finish last week at the PGA Championship and has finished in the top-10 two other times. He has a solid combination of both yards off the tee (295.6, 44th on tour) and accuracy (65.2%, 37th on tour) while hitting 67.8% of greens in regulation (28th on tour). Chappell is a long shot against such a strong field, but is certainly a player to keep an eye on.

The PGA regular season is in the books and now we concentrate on the FedEx Cup playoffs. The first stop is The Barclays which is being hosted by Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, NJ. 122 of the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings are in play this week with the top 100 advancing to the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston over Labor Day weekend. That will then be decreased to the top 70 and then eventually to the top 30 for the Tour Championship.
Ridgewood will be playing as a par 71, 7,319-yard track that was built in 1890 and is actually made up of three different nine-hole courses. All said, there are seven holes from the East nine, five from the Center nine, and six from the West nine and after some rerouting issues early on, they feel they have the best 18 holes Ridgewood has to offer. This is the third Barclays it has hosted, the first in 2008, won by Vijay Singh in a playoff, followed again in 2010 by Matt Kuchar's victory also in a playoff.
Course knowledge is always a big factor in golf but not everyone in the field this week is familiar with the A.W. Tillinghast layout. Less than half of the players in the field were here in 2010, 60 in total, and there are only 50 players here this week that played in 2008. Of the 122 players this year, 46 have played both in 2008 and 2010 and in total, there are 58 players that will be seeing Ridgewood for the first time. Sergio Garcia, Jim Furyk, George McNeill and Tim Wilkinson are the four players that were here in 2008 but not 2010.
Jim Furyk (+2,500) is the hottest player on the PGA Tour not named McIlroy. He has finished in the top 20 in each of his last six starts including a T5 at the PGA Championship, a solo second at the RBC Canadian Open and a solo fourth at the Open Championship. While he did not play here in 2010, he finished T12 in 2008 and he has posted more rounds of par or better in the FedEx Cup Playoffs than anybody else.
We are getting exceptional odds with Jason Day (+3,000) who is searching for his third win of the season. He had a rough stretch between late June and early August because of an injury and a case of vertigo but all looks to be fine following his T15 at Valhalla two weeks ago. After a T31 here in 2008, he backed that up with a T5 in 2010 and is one of only 20 players to have made the cut both years.
It is good to see Hunter Mahan (+4,000) back in the mix after a bad start to the season because of injuries. He is coming off a T7 at the PGA Championship which was his first top ten since March. But he has missed only one cut in his last five starts and his worst finish is a T32 so he has been very competitive. He is the only player to play in every FedEx Playoff event and he finished T31 both times here.
Kevin Streelman (+7,000) is one of the 46 players that have played here in 2008 and in 2010 and he is the highest money earner of all players not to win. He won a combined $724,333 thanks to a T3 in 2010 and a T4 in 2008. He is 39th in the FedEx Cup Standings thanks to a win and a T3. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship but he missed four straight cuts, including the U.S. Open right before his win at the Travelers.
Ryan Palmer (+11,000) is the big longshot this week and he is not getting much respect. He is ranked 30th in the FedEx Cup Standings and has missed only three cuts all season. He is coming off a T5 at the PGA Championship which was his sixth top eight finish this year that includes a pair of runner-ups at the Humana Challenge and the Honda Classic. He is a three-time winner that finished T62 in 2008 and T5 in 2010 at Ridgewood.
