Belmont Stakes 2010 Odds – Spangled Star 30-1 Long Shot
One of the relative unknowns in the 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes is Spangled Star, who finds himself among the long shots to win this Saturday.
Spangled Star Info:
Owner(s): Lawrence P. Roman
Trainer: Richard E. Dutrow Jr.
Jockey: Garrett Gomez
Bred: Kentucky (USA)
Pedigree: Distorted Humor – Spanged by Kris S.
Opening Odds:
Spangled Star opened as a 30/1 long shot and according to oddsmakers from online sports book Sports Interaction, that’s where he currently sits now. He has the longest odds of any horse in this year’s Belmont.
Post Position:
Spangled Star drew the No. 2 post position on Wednesday, which could bring him some much-needed luck. The No. 2 post has produced 11 wins at the Belmont, which ranks it behind the rail position (23 winners), the No. 3 and No. 5 positions (13 winners apiece), and the No. 7 post (12 wins).
Overview:
The last and only time that Spangled Star raced this year was at the G3 Withers on February 24. And while he did finish in the money by placing third, the race was only 1 miles long, which probably won’t serve him particularly well this Saturday. The good news is that Garrett Gomez, who is the best jockey in the country to have never won a Triple Crown race, will mount him on Saturday. Still, Spangled Star needed six attempts to break his maiden and with only one start under his belt this season, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll surprise.
