Boxing Matchups: Mayweather vs. Mosley Odds & Picks

It isn’t the fight people expected, but Floyd Mayweather returns to the ring on Saturday May, 1 when he takes on Shane Mosley for the WBA World Welterweight Championship.

This fight came together when a proposed bout between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fell through due to the two being unable to agree on the drug testing policy. Mosley was scheduled to face Andre Berto on Jan. 30, but Berto had to pull out as well, which set up this fight of two legendary boxers.

This fight will take place next Saturday from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Pay Per-View.

Bet Mayweather vs. Mosley

Mayweather is the clear favorite in this fight with a betting line of -450 while Mosley has a line of +300 according to online sports book Sports Interaction. The fight card begins at 9PM ET on Pay-Per-View. Here is a closer look at both boxers and their odds heading into this fight.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KO’s)

Strengths: Mayweather is unbeaten for a reason. He is considered by many as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Pacquiao is also in that discussion, which makes their planned fight being scrapped a major loss for the boxing world. Mayweather’s speed and strength combination is as great as the sport has ever seen. Mayweather has fought in multiple weight classes and succeeded at each. His smart style of fighting has allowed him to beat some of the best in the world.

Weaknesses: Mayweather has been criticized for having relatively uneventful fights and toying with his opponents when he could finish them off. Mayweather takes pride in his image and looks to take as little damage as possible in the fights, which could be why his fights are eventful. Mayweather will look to stick and move, but don’t look for him to stand in the pocket and take a punch to give a punch.

Last Five Fights:

Unanimous decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez on Sept. 19, 2009

10th Round TKO win over Ricky Hatton on Dec. 8, 2007

Split decision win over Oscar De La Hoya on May 5, 2007

Unanimous decision win over Carlos Baldomir on Nov. 4, 2006

Unanimous decision win over Zab Judah on April 8, 2006

Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KO’s)

Strengths: Mosley enters the fight as the champion and he has found success in three different weight classes. At 38, Mosley is likely past his prime, but his speed and power have always been a strength for him. He continually fights the top competition with his last fight coming in January of 2009 in a TKO over Antonio Margarito. Mosley has won his last two fights by TKO and four of his last five wins have been by KO or TKO.

Weaknesses: While Mosley isn’t elderly, at 38, he isn’t going to be as fresh as Mayweather. While Mosley has the speed, he isn’t as fast as his opponent, which could be the difference in this fight. Mosley has the power to score the knockout if he connects on Mayweather, but connecting will be hard to do against the agile and mobile Mayweather.

Last Five Fights:

Ninth Round TKO over Antonio Margarito on Jan. 24, 2009

12th Round KO over Ricardo Mayorga on Sept. 27, 2008

Unanimous decision loss to Miguel Cotto on Nov. 10, 2007

Unanimous decision win over Luiz Collazo on Feb. 10, 2007

Sixth Round TKO win over Fernando Vargas on July 15, 2006

Who will win: Mosley is going to be game and go out with nothing to lose, even though he is the champion. Don’t look for Mosley to pull off the upset, but to pose some problems for Mayweather that could expose weaknesses for future opponents like Pacquiao. The boxing world needs Mayweather to win this fight and he will be ready for this fight with the Pacquiao thing still looming over him. Look for Mayweather to win this fight by decision.
