Weekly Bankroll Builder: April 17 Gulfstream Park Late Pk4 play

Wednesday, April 15, 2020 Race Chat Host Brian Nadeau
With the Stronach 5 on hiatus for the time being, let’s alternate between Gulfstream’s late Pk5 and Pk4 on Friday’s, as even though the Championship Meet has ended, the racing is still flush with top connections and deep fields.

Please take note that this analysis is done upwards of 48 hours in advance, so obviously weather, track conditions and especially late scratches can and will have an effect. Please check back around 4pm Friday for an update, as well as on Twitter.

Race 7 (4:15 ET): 3up 20k N2L at 5 furlongs (turf)

The opening leg looks like it’s supposed to be won by one of the four favorites—#2 ONE WILD FOREVER (4-1), #6 SOUPER SHENANIGAN (7-2), #11 SOVEREIGN WARRION, and #12 OHANZEE (6-1)—but which one is the problem. I’ll use all of them while noting that the latter drew well for his pressing style and, while he faces winners today, could be ready to go on a bit of a roll after breaking through last time. ‘Warrior has been coming out of fast races for the level (for these) and as a big chance from a bit off the pace, while ‘Forever needs to work out a trip from down inside, and ‘Shenanigan is the wildcard off the WO layoff, but his two turf races to start his career where solid.

Pk4 A horses: 12,11,2,6 (listed in order of preference)

The wild card is #3 RESERVENOTATTAINED (6-1), who hasn’t been out in almost two years, but he returns as a first-time gelding for an underrated Yates barn, and has worked well for this, plus he showed some talent, when last seen, albeit on the dirt.

Pk4 B horses: 3

Potential B add ins: #8 Fentynola (20-1)

Race 8: 3yof AOC (50k/N1X) at 5 furlongs (turf)

I’ll go a bit against the grain here and side with the Tampa shipper #3 POSEIDON’S PASSION (8-1), who got to the turf last time and really improved, while winning with a solid figure and a stalking gear, plus that came off a four-month layoff, so she may move forward again. I’m treading lightly but using both #11 NOTORIOUS R B G (3-1), a debut winner for Clement, and #4 JADES GELLY (5-2) a Ward re-claim for just beat MCL’ers for Joseph, since both will be facing winners at underlaid prices.

Pk4 A horses: 3,11,4

Don’t sleep on #8 MRS. MAISEL (10-1), who was facing stakes foes last time and is just a notch below the best here on paper, which means if the pace falls apart, or she moves forward a bit, she can surprise. I’m against #5 SHIPPY (7-2) on top, even though she is the class off her 2yo graded dirt form, since she hasn’t been out since September, has never run on turf, and starts for Weaver, who is white hot this year, but is a combined 3-for-70 when you add up his first-time with trainer (0-for-14), first-time turf (2-for-31), and 180+-day layoff (1-for-25).

Pk4 B horses: 8,5

Potential B add ins: #2 Envied (6-1)

Race 9: 4up AOC (62.5k/N2X) at 6 furlongs

Clearly this race comes down to what you think of the undefeated #6 FORTIN HILL (9-5), who figures odds-on for Brown but hasn’t been out since June and could need this. Budget players will single him, and rightfully so as his best is simply better than these, but he could need this and obviously there are issues attached too, so I’ll use another. And that brings me to #2 YODEL E. A. WHO (7-2), who has been in good form in his last two for Joseph and should have plenty of foundation off the cutback from a pair of 1-mile runs, and owns plenty of tactical speed should the pace be a bit to hot for the comebacking favorite.

Pk4 A horses: 6,2

Fortin Hill may well be 3-5, and Brown figures to have him ready, so there will be no backups since I’m Dutching the top line with ‘Who.

Pk4 B horses: NONE

Potential B add ins: #7 Moonoverseba (8-1), #9 Benefactor (6-1)
Race 10: 3yo 65k MCL at 1 1/16 miles (turf)

Tough sledding here, as nine of the 11 experienced runners have never been in for a tag and therefore take the biggest drop in all of racing. It’s a deep spread for me with seven on the top line, as most of these either look the same on paper, or the longer prices are within a few lengths of the favorites, and therefore are worth inclusion on the top line. So, without further adieu, I’ll go with #3 COWTOWN (5-1), #7 CHOCOLATE BAR (8-1), #6 RECONVENE (12-1, #12 MAGIC STREET (7-2), and #11 ALPHA DOG (6-1), and, #10 MAVERICK KITTEN (4-1). The top pick is a stab, but Pletcher is 33% on the MSW drop, and while he hasn’t tried turf before, he exits some good dirt races, drew well, and has plenty of tactical speed too.

Pk4 A horses: 3,7,6,12,11,10

Please note to keep the backup tickets down, I’ll use only 3,7,6,12

I’ll use a trio underneath too, since this is a tough race that I have no strong opinion on, and #1 KING OF ROCK (12-1) drops, drew well and starts for a sharp Gargan barn, while #9 EAGLES PRINCE (15-1) was in a pair of good Spa dirt races when last seen for Mott, and #5 BOURBON WISDOM (12-1) is a poorer version of Cowtown and adds blinkers.

Pk4 B horses: 1,9,5

Potential B add ins: #2 Sir Hoski (6-1), #1 Direct Approach (8-1)

The suggested tickets:

Main Ticket: 11,12,2,6 with 3,11,4 with 6,2 with 3,7,6,12,11,10 = $72
Race 7 B Backup: 3 with 3,11,4 with 6,2 with 3,7,6,12 = $12
Race 8 B Backup: 11,12,2,6 with 8,5 with 6,2 with 3,7,6,12 = $32
Race 9 B Backup: 11,12,2,6 with 3,11,4 with 6,2 with 3,7,6,12 = $48
Race 10 B Backup: 11,12,2,6 with 3,11,4 with 6,2 with 1,9,5 = $36

Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

Gulfstream Park - Race #1
Picks Notes
#9 Wonder Blondy Dangerous miss didn't do much running in two dirt starts then woke way up when a close 4th in her turf debut last time, when Lasix and blinkers were added, and that run was as good as the chalk's, and she'll be a much bigger price; upset special.
#10 Harmonic Thunder The chalk was a solid 2nd in her return to the turf last time when taking blinkers-off, and a repeat makes her the one to beat, but she also has no margin for error on figures, drew poorly, and will be overbet as well; plenty scary, but hardly a lock.
#9 Wonder Blondy Price player has been in contention of late while earning solid figures but has come up a bit short, but the blinkers come off today, she meets a field she's close to on paper, and wouldn't have to improve much to have a chance; exotics price appeal.
Race Summary There's no reason the pick should be 12-1 on the ML when you view her off her lone turf run, as it was as good as 'Thunder's for sure, but even 6-1 or so is fair, so you can play her in all the slots, and especially to kick off the early Pk5 as well, since she tipped her hand last time, and has plenty of reason to improve off that turf tightener.

Gulfstream Park - Race #4
Picks Notes
#5 Fast Fraction Class dropper was a good 2nd against better when last seen in December, meets a very modest crew, even for this reduced level, and may not even be favored; love her chances here.
#7 Garner State Park Pletcher charge will be bet hard off that solid debut 3rd at the level, and she has plenty of upside too, but the pick has a tactical edge, which may be too much to overcome; second-best.
#8 A Beautiful Day Odd ML favorite has speed and drops in class, but that 7th last time was weak, and even her best two-back wasn't big, so while she won't be favored, she's still tough to trust; tread lightly.
Race Summary The 5 really should be favored, so this 4-1 ML would be a welcome sight, and even 3-1 or so seems fair, as there's no one to fear here, she's best on paper as is, and has a tactical gear to sit off the 8 and get first run on the 7, so play her aggressively to win and place, while getting some built-in value by singling her in the early Pk5/Pk4, since she looks primed to take advantage of a suspect group.

Gulfstream Park - Race #5
Picks Notes
#4 Maries Melody Pace presser just missed last time from an impossible draw, is posted much better here, should be on or just off the pace, and will offer plenty of value too; look out.
#2 Philly Special The chalk will be her hard on the drop for Pletcher and Saez and certainly figures, though she failed at short odds last time and will be overbet again; trying to beat on top.
#11 Show Maid MSW dropper ran in place on debut against tons better, so this drop may wake her way up, and the figure was solid for this group, but this post is brutal; tabbing today.
Race Summary That 6-1 ML seems fair on the pick, as she's in the mix with the best of them on paper and exits a huge run from an losing draw, so play her in all the slots, and especially to end rhe early Pk5/Pk4, and to kick off the big carryover Rainbow 6 as well, since budget players will be on the 2, even though she has no edge over anyone here.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #2
Picks Notes
#1 Timeless Di Very even try when sort of chilly on the board in the debut at this same level, and there are a couple of pace players drawn further outside that might lead to her getting a decent finishing trip up the inside.
#8 Freedom Lass Not sure what to make of this one, as she was nowhere to be found in the debut run before improving in a big way with a forward trip in the mud against Illinois-bred stakes company. I'd be plenty skeptical of her on a fast main track, and those restricted IL-bred stakes are certainly not what they once were.
#5 Flaming Indy A bit concerned about this one's inability to stay on in the lane, so she seems a bit more likely underneath than she does on top, and are you really excited to take anything like the 7/2 ML price after she was beaten five at this level at 35/1 last out?
Race Summary Timeless Di can be playable at something like the 6/1 ML offering, as the forward players have some questions to answer and are likely to take a bit of cash, too.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #5
Picks Notes
#3 Not Telling Wasn't embarrassed when beaten about a half-dozen lengths in the debut run, and he'll return with the benefit of Lasix this afternoon. Thinking there's enough upside here to score.
#11 Molokai Night Want nothing to do with this 18: 0-1-0 maiden on top, but he has been turning in some of his better efforts in recent starts and can land another piece of this with the blinkers coming off.
#6 Just Shoot Already Speedy type tends to chase and fade without finding much late in the lane, and that seems like a very possible outcome again in this spot, and he's likely to take some cash again.
Race Summary Not Telling isn't too far off what it would take to handle this group, and he has enough second-out upside while adding Lasix to think he's legit. I wouldn't be against taking a mildly aggressive stand and singling him here.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #8
Picks Notes
#9 Town Classic Might get a bit overbet to close out the card, but he's in line for a great trip from the outside in a spot where most of those racing inside and in front of him will be suspect late while he's winding up from close range.
#5 Small Fortune Hit or miss recent form, but he has done really good work locally and owns just a slight rating ability that may serve him well with these.
#1 Ludington Wonder if this guy is worth a little look underneath at a price, as he figures to save some ground in the early going and isn't too far removed from some efforts that would keep him in the mix for a slice.
Race Summary Town Classic looks like the right one from the outside with his tactical ability, and while #6 Zorb also looks like a player, I don't completely trust him to rate nicely enough to score here.

Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Oaklawn Park - Race #4
Picks Notes
#7 Elitch Ran an even 5th vs. starter allowance company in his 1st off the claim by Asmussen; takes a class dip and should find that these will come back to him late. One to hold off.
#8 D'urban Park Usually is a big player when he gets on the front end and will have a good chance for that; can improve in his 3rd off the 11-month layoff.
#5 Senor Blanco Doesn't show a lot of dirt on his form and comes in after racing vs. a higher level at Fair Grounds; was off the board in two since being claimed by Deville and drops to a discount.
Race Summary Elitch was outrun by a decent company last out and dropping to a straight claiming price should move in up; can bring a solid late kick vs. these.

Oaklawn Park - Race #8
Picks Notes
#12 Operation Stevie Rallied mildly going two turns last out but closed stoutly at this distance two back and might be overlooked because of the outside post, which doesn't matter as much since he has no early speed. Likely to be a good price and will get a pace that can work in his favor.
#2 Curate Was claimed by Miller last out, won a smiilar race two back and has three works since his latest; ready for a big effort.
#1 Gordy Florida Usually shows a lot of early speed and will rush into contention from the inside; could be very tough if he brings his best.
Race Summary Operation Stevie has some late pop in fast sprint races and they'll be rolling quickly early on in this one; tough if he gets a clear path late in the game.

Oaklawn Park - Race #9
Picks Notes
#2 Captain Don Flashed brief speed in the mud vs. older rivals and gets his 1st crack at Arkansas-bred 3-year-olds; problem won't get the lead but should be able to stay within range of the favorite and likely will the one to benefit if the pacesetter falters.
#10 Zaino Boyz Cruised to an easy win in an optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park; won the Inaugural Stakes race at Tampa and likely will be a short-priced favorite vs. state-breds. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to early pressure if he gets it; if he gets none, he'll probably he tough to catch.
#7 Man in the Can Broke his maiden at Remington last fall and was a non-threatening 6th in his only Oaklawn start; gets Rosario for this one and could come rolling.
Race Summary Captain Don has been taking on older horses and should be able to get into a tracking position just off the leader; can benefit from having several starts over the strip.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #5 - Post: 2:25pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 66

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#6 JUST SHOOT ALREADY (ML=3/1)
#2 SIR SWAYSALOT (ML=4/1)
#8 ESOR (ML=8/1)

JUST SHOOT ALREADY - Nice return on investment for this jockey and handler pair. Aboard this horse on March 28th and Wales is back again in the irons in this race. Gelding has shown some pace. This shorter trip should be better for him. The latest rating of 70 is the highest last race speed rating in the group. Gelding is a few starts into a come back here. Should give a nice effort today. SIR SWAYSALOT - Have to make this gelding a win candidate; he comes off a sharp effort on Mar 29th. This gelding was sharp enough to post a 'top two' workout recently. I think he's ready for today's event. Took a significant drop in class rating last time around the track at Tampa Bay Downs. Returning to a similar class in this event. Should do well. Ranks number one in the field in earnings per start. A powerful effort in this event will add to the lifetime earnings. ESOR - Was in a $16,000 Maiden Claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs last out. That contest had a class rating of 72 and he is moving down in this race. A certain solid contender.

Vulnerable Contenders: #11 MOLOKAI NIGHT (ML=9/2), #3 NOT TELLING (ML=6/1), #9 ROW THE BOAT (ML=8/1),

MOLOKAI NIGHT - Difficult to play any horse to turn things around if there is no wager value to taking the chance. Finished fourth in his most recent race with a run-of-the-mill fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this field. NOT TELLING - Could be tough for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed figure. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure close to today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list. ROW THE BOAT - This horse will probably need at least one more start after the lackluster showing following the extended rest time. When examining today's Equibase class figure, he will have to garner a better speed figure than in the last race to compete in this dirt sprint.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Put your money on #6 JUST SHOOT ALREADY on the nose if you can get odds of 3/1 or more

#7 GARNER STATE PARK (ML=7/2)

GARNER STATE PARK - I believe this racer will be right there at the wire. Gets Lasix for the 2nd time, so Pletcher must have confidence in her. This filly has lots of ability on the grass. Could be long gone by the time they turn for home and hit the stretch.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 A BEAUTIFUL DAY (ML=3/1), #5 FAST FRACTION (ML=4/1), #14 MARICOPA (ML=8/1),

A BEAUTIFUL DAY - This vulnerable equine gave a lackluster effort last time finishing seventh. Don't expect any betterment in today's race. Finished seventh in her most recent race with a substandard speed rating. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this bunch. FAST FRACTION - The extended rest time will probably mean trouble for this steed. MARICOPA - This thoroughbred just hasn't looked fit lately.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - GARNER STATE PARK - This racer figures to be competitive against these thoroughbreds in this race. She has the top speed rating in grass routes.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #7 GARNER STATE PARK on the win end if we get at least 1/1 odds

Race 3 - Maiden Claiming - 8.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $17000 Class Rating: 75

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $12,500.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 7 ROAD GAME 7/2

# 12 DESCENT 10/1

# 2 GLOBUS 4/1

I favor ROAD GAME here. Has recorded formidable speed figures in dirt route races in the past. Could provide positive returns based on quite good recent Equibase Speed Figs with an average of 75. Hartman has one of the strongest winning percentages in this group of animals with entries running at this distance and surface. DESCENT - Seems to have a very good class edge based on the latest company kept. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Asmussen have shown sharp results recently.

QUARTER HORSE 350Y, FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 124 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 5 FOCUS ON ME 123 5/2

# 10 THE CASH FERRY 8/1

# 4 KGS PERFECT STORM 20/1

FOCUS ON ME 123 has a strong shot to take this race. Overall the speed figures of this equine look very strong in this race. Could best this group of horses in this race based on the Equibase speed fig - 76 - of his last affair. Gillis has this gelding running well and is a very strong choice based on the solid speed figs recorded in short races lately. THE CASH FERRY - Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this pony look competitive in this contest. Has garnered strong Equibase speed figs in short races in the past. KGS PERFECT STORM - The average Equibase class rating of 66 makes this one hard to beat. Has run very well when running a short race.
