Gulfstream Sunday Mandatory Payout Rainbow 6 Analysis

April 18, 2020 | By Jeremy Plonk

Gulfstream Park will have a mandatory payout in its Rainbow Six wager on Sunday. Races 6-11 on the program comprise the Rainbow Six, which has a 20-cent minimum base amount. Analysis has been made with the expectation of races remaining on their originally scheduled surfaces.

Race 6 (3:23 pm ET): OPTIONAL CLM at 1 mile (turf)

BAREEQA (9-5) should be a legitimate favorite coming off her victory Feb. 17 in the Mary Todd Lincoln overnight stakes. She’s won 4 of 9 over the course for high-percentage connections. If you extend beyond the BAREEQA, the floodgates open with similar-looking contenders and can swell your ticket cost rapidly. BRITESIDEOFTHEROAD (9-2) and SCATNAP (7-2) are logical players, while prices CODRINGTON (10-1) and SISTER GEMA (15-1) also deserve some attention. Depending on your budget size or strength of opinions in other races, it’s either BAREEQA or spread.

Race 7 (3:53 pm ET): CLM at 1 mile

BROOKES ALL MINE (2-1) has finished first or second in 5 straight starts and was recently claimed back by trainer Gerardo Quiroz. He’s consistently been a dirt miler at the $8000 level and should be trusted. Options here include GRACE’S DRAMA (7-2), a late runner twice behind BROOKES ALL MINE in recent months, and TIZ POSSIBLE DEAR (5-2), who finished behind that pair last out in her first attempt at the mile trip. I’ll feel safe to single here.

Race 8 (4:25 pm ET): ALW at 1 mile (turf)

Todd Pletcher-trained stablemates NO WORD (3-1) and MYSTIC LANCELOT (7-2) should have the edge in this allowance. NO WORD flashed promise at age 2, but has not been out since September. The barn excels off layoffs, so there’s less concern here than with some. MYSTIC LANCELOT chased a talented runner in Gufo last out over 1-1/8 miles and should appreciate the shorter trip based on pedigree and past performances. Price player LIFE ON TOP (15-1) hinted at talent in his maiden win from a wide draw in January before a disappointing run in the Grade 3 Palm Beach.

Race 9 (4:55 pm ET): OPTIONAL CLM at 1 mile

Top contenders TRAPPEZOID (3-1) and YES I SEE (5-2) both are deep closers and capable of winning this from off the pace. But if they’re too be defeated, you’ll want an early pace threat to go along with them to round out solid coverage. BLAKEY (6-1) could be the most effective on the front end.

Race 10 (5:25 pm ET): OPTIONAL CLM at 1 mile (turf)

Also-eligible ZABAVA (6-1) is the horse to beat if the class-dropper draws into the field for trainer Mike Maker. With or without that one, this is a competitive group. PAKHET (12-1) and ALL QUALITY (6-1) are Mark Casse trainees, and that barn typically has Keeneland-meant turf runners with conditions to do damage this time of year. SERANITSA (9-2) returns to Gulfstream, where she’s had some past success, and shows up in the barn of Brendan Walsh, who has had a good 2020 on turf. CARIBA (7-2) could win, but figures to be overbet off a runner-up by a nose and barn change to Christophe Clement. BERING STRAIT (4-1) finished alongside CARIBA last out despite a poor draw that day. She could turn the table.

Race 11 (5:55 pm ET): MSW at 1 mile (turf)

RENATA (7-2) draws a more favorable post in her second start after overcoming a wide go to finish second in a promising March 29 debut. There’s not a lot of proven Gulfstream open-company maiden special weight turf form in this race. But she’s age 3 against elders, so there’s some concern. The 4-year-old ROYAL MANDATE (6-1) needed her last from a tough post draw at Tampa and showed good life after nearly 4 months on the shelf.

Suggested Tickets:

Smaller Budget: 3 with 4 with 5,4,12 with 3,8,7 with 13,1,4,6,8,12 with 4,9 = $21.60
Larger Budget: 3,4,5,7,9 with 4 with 5,4,12 with 3,8,7 with 13,1,4,6,8,12 with 4,9 = $108

Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

Gulfstream Park - Race #1
Picks Notes
#9 Saucy Tune Price player will like getting out of the state-bred MSW ranks, and getting back to the turf too, and that close 6th on debut against better on the grass was solid, and she won't have to improve much to have a say here; upset special.
#3 Camellia Girl The chalk will be bet hard on the drop for Clement, and she finally draws a good post too, but she has been a disappointment thus far, and the fact she's gone from MSW to 50k to 25k is not a good sign; trying to beat on top.
#6 Myfirstexwife Logical contender has run well of late and fits on figures, but she also has seemingly reached a plateau, and it still hasn't been good enough, so with little to no room for improvement, she's tough to like on top; underneath only.
Race Summary The price will be right on the 9, and it's not like the favorite is any great shakes either, so play her in all the slots, and especially to kick off the early Pk5 as well, since a win would add plenty of value to the sequence right off the bat, and there's every right to believe she runs a carer-best race.

Gulfstream Park - Race #9
Picks Notes
#7 Blakey Class riser walloped N3L foes last time, may shake out as a Lone F, and meets a field riddled with deep closers; love his chances here.
#8 Yes I See ML favorite drops slightly in class and has the best figures here, but his decided lack of early speed won't help; runs out of room in the lane.
#3 Trapezoid Fellow deep closer looked good beater lesser last time and is another who will rally on, but the early pace won't help his chances; tread lightly.
Race Summary Pace makes the race and, aside from cheap speed from the 1, there's no one else here capable of running with the 7 early, and we know he enters this in fine form as well, so play him aggressively to win and place, while getting some real value by keying him in the mandatory payout Rainbow 6, as well as in the late Pk5/Pk4, as he looks to be getting all the best of it here, and should be a decent price to boot.

Gulfstream Park - Race #11
Picks Notes
#8 Bright Street Motion charge was DOB on debut but ran better than it looked to be a close 8th, meets a field there for the taking, and gives the impression she's now cranked for this; bombs away.
#2 Let Them Eat Cake Speedy sort got to the turf and really improved last time, could be the controlling speed, and has every right to move forward off that very sharp grass debut; looms the one to catch.
#9 Royal Mandate Tampa invader exits a big figure 2nd in her return and turf debut, and she could be tighter second-off the break, but the wide draw and rise in class are worrisome; still, plenty scary.
Race Summary The 8 got the perfect experience builder in her debut, and they didn't pay 460k for her without really liking what they saw, so she's got every right to blow up in a big way here, so give her a look in all the slots, and especially to end the mandatory payout Rainbow 6, as well as the late Pk5/Pk4, as a win would blow all the sequences up, and the gut says she's going to fire a much bigger shot than she did in her unveiling.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #5
Picks Notes
#3 Queens Embrace She's been on a real tear with three straight wins, and if she can run back to her last, this is her race to lose.
#4 Real Doozie Didn't miss by much behind the top choice when they met last out, but she was 31/1 that day and now we're talking maybe 7/2 or 4/1 for the rematch? No thanks.
#7 Volador Can get a pretty good go of things from close range, and she woke up quickly with some easier company on the local lawn last time out.
Race Summary Queens Embrace should be tough with these, as she has held solid form while climbing the class ladder in recent starts. Something like her last handles these.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #7
Picks Notes
#6 Global Brand Really expected better from her last time out when she was a complete no-show at 5/1 when stretching out, but the pedigree is there for her to be a good one, so I'm not giving up hope just yet.
#5 Tilsa Thomas barn does just about everything right, and they win a lot of races like this locally. Debuter has a turfy enough pedigree to think she's a good fit here.
#7 Sassy Sass Bred to be a good one, she'll also make her career debut in this two-turn turf try. Clement barn has connected at nearly 40% at the meet and should have this one ready.
Race Summary Global Brand was a major disappointment for me last out, but I'm not willing to believe we've seen a true representation yet. She can bounce back here over the local footing. #1 First Course fit here, but the 3/1 ML favorite's form seems too unreliable for me to dive in at that kind of number.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #9
Picks Notes
#7 Band Sweetheart Will offer only a fraction of the 35/1 price from the debut, but she looked good that day when hanging around for third behind an easy winner. The blinkers go on today, and if they move her up even a little bit she's the one.
#3 Bahama Pearl Not totally sure what to make of her given the two good tries came with claiming company and the one bad one came at this level. That said, she's quick and can probably win this if she likes the footing.
#1 Belleinthecity Moves to the turf off the November 2018 layoff, but she's bred to handle the surface and has shown a bit of talent in the past. Wouldn't want too short a number from the fence off that kind of break.
Race Summary Band Sweetheart gets blinkers added after an encouraging debut run last time out, and she presumably has some upside in this second start.

Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Remington Park - Race #3
Picks Notes
#7 Willie Wanna Rush Popped a head in front and then finished 4th in a futurity trial; can score on this dip to maiden claiming.
#4 Yalitza Paricio Has had good training sessions leading up to her debut and looks like she's ready for the real deal.
#1 Checkupon James Was just a half-length behind while in 4th at the end of his debut, which against maiden special weights; could make a solid run along the rail.
Race Summary Willie Wanna Rush was in a much tougher spot than this at 1st asking and has the ability to graduate here.

Remington Park - Race #7
Picks Notes
#4 Won Tres Seis Was up in time two back and was claimed, then made a strong late move for 4th in his 1st for the Johnson barn; fits with these and should like the 440 yards.
#3 Chasing Valiant Lost a photo at Sunland in his latest and ran in some tough races last year; could be a tough runner in his 1st local start of the season.
#1 Giant Courage Was 4th in his 1st of the year and has been close in his last two; looks like he prefers the longer sprints.
Race Summary Won Tres Seis usually has a solid late move and can get the 440; looks like a good claim and he can be a factor at this level.

Remington Park - Race #9
Picks Notes
#3 Kuhl Cash Was 3rd going 550 two back and broke his maiden going this distance of 660 last year; looks like a natural for the longer events.
#2 Lotta Smoking Was 2nd going 870 and turns back to 660 on the straightaway; likes the longer distances and can give it a solid go here.
#8 First Lota Pyc Held on for 3rd going 330 last time and has a good chance on or close to the lead going longer; can be competitive at this year.
Race Summary Kuhl Cash's only success came at this unusual 660-yard straight run down the stretch; he has the speed to be a factor early and has shown he had the necessary endurance to finish it up.

Odds shown are morning line odds.

Race 3 - Claiming - 4.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $8000 Class Rating: 65

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE FEBRUARY 19 ALLOWED 3 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $3,200

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 3 MADAME JEANETTE 9/5

# 2 UNCHANGED 7/2

# 7 CEE SAM'S GIRL 5/1

MADAME JEANETTE is the best wager in this race. Has been consistently running well lately. Naranjo has this filly running well and is a decent pick based on the formidable Equibase Speed Figs recorded in sprint races recently. I like the rider on this filly - very good chance to win the race. UNCHANGED - Looks like a sound candidate for the exotics. As of late Morfin has provided gamblers with a very good winning percentage with horses moving in dirt sprint races. CEE SAM'S GIRL - Could provide positive profits based on competitive recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 61. She has very good class ratings, averaging 85, and has to be given consideration here.

Race 5 - Maiden Claiming - 220y on the Dirt. Purse: $9700 Class Rating: 61

QUARTER HORSE 220Y, FOR MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $10,000.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 10 FIRE N THE WHOLE 6/1

# 4 ALWAYS RELENTLESS 20/1

# 6 FLYING JESSIE GIRL 12/1

I think FIRE N THE WHOLE is a very good choice. Foals of this sire have given players respectable profits in their first starts. It's a good signal that Olmstead is using Packer on this one. ALWAYS RELENTLESS - Offspring of this sire have produced very good profits recently in their first asking contest. Has very good early speed and will probably fare admirably against this group of horses. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Stein have shown strong results recently.

Oaklawn Park - Race #5 - Post: 3:06pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 86

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#9 GREATER CAIRO (ML=4/1)
#7 GUMWRAPPER (ML=10/1)

GREATER CAIRO - You should overlook that last race at Oaklawn Park on a muddy track where he finished out of the money. Should do well in this race under normal track conditions. GUMWRAPPER - A horse coming back this rapidly after a solid race is a good sign. Note that although this colt finished second in his last race, he was well ahead of the third place horse. This is a classic positive angle. I think this colt is ready to run a good one. He's had enough races since the vacation and should be fit.

Vulnerable Contenders: #13 BOBBY AXELROD (ML=5/2), #6 BARINGER SPRING (ML=7/2), #10 LITANY (ML=9/2),

BOBBY AXELROD - This gelding hasn't been getting the job done as the favorite. BARINGER SPRING - This horse hasn't shown very much in the last couple affairs. The speed figure in the last race doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class figure of today's race. Mark this thoroughbred as a likely underlay. LITANY - Should have at least finished in the money in the last couple of months in a sprint event to be worth the risk at short odds in a sprint. Finished seventh in his most recent effort with a pedestrian speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this field.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #9 GREATER CAIRO to win if we can get at least 3/2 odds

EXACTA WAGERS:

#2 MIGHTY FAST (ML=7/2)

MIGHTY FAST - Have to give this colt a good shot. Ran a solid race last time around the track within the last 30 days.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 STRONG ENDING (ML=9/5), #8 INGREIDO (ML=9/2), #6 PRIVILEGIO (ML=6/1),

STRONG ENDING - A pattern of decreasing speed figures 76/73/63 for this pony. Hard to wager on at 9/5 odds after the most recent efforts. Recorded a substandard speed figure in the last race in a $25,000 Maiden Claiming race on April 3rd. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that rating. INGREIDO - This animal just hasn't looked sharp recently. Recorded a quite unimpressive speed rating last time out in a $12,500 Maiden Claiming race on March 18th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that number. PRIVILEGIO - This pony ran a pedestrian speed figure last out. He shouldn't run much better and will probably lose in today's race running that fig.

#2 MIGHTY FAST is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better
