Horse Races Today: Sunday's Belmont Park Analysis & Odds
June 7, 2020
By Mike Dempsey
Saturday was not a real good day for me, but it might have been worse for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
Baffert had an incredibly deep three-year-old division and it appears just a couple of weeks ago that he would dominate the Triple Crown races.
Authentic was beaten in yesterday’s Santa Anita Derby (G1), settling for second behind Honor A.P., suffering his first career defeat.
Baffert also announced that Charlatan will miss the Belmont Stakes and Kentucky Derby due to an ankle injury that will send him to the sidelines.
The barn’s other top three-year-old is Nadal, who was atop the leader board in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points race, but an injury after a workout has led the connections to retire him.
Authentic still looks like a player despite the loss and Baffert has some other ammunition in his shed row who we will see over the next few months. With the Derby still three months away, Baffert still has plenty of time.
We had just a really mediocre day on Saturday. My bankroll took a hit. Today I put all my focus and energy into the Belmont Park card, the 10 races getting underway at 1:15 ET.
You can catch the action from Belmont Park today from 1:00 to 2:00 ET on FS2 and 2:00 to 6:00 on FS1. Horseplayers can also stream all the horse racing action including Santa Anita using the Watch TVG App. The horse betting company based in the U.S. is offering a risk free bet up to $300 for new players.
Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:
Belmont Park Race 1 Analysis - 6/7 (1:15 ET)
#5 Appletini 12-1
#1 Lookbothways 7-2
#7 Its a Chance 5-1
#11 J J Loves Billy 6-1
Analysis: Appletini tracked the early pace and tired to finish sixth last out against $16,000 non-winners of three. She returns off a three month break here for the Gyarmati barn that has weak numbers off the bench, 0 for 20 with runners coming back off a 61-180-day break. Three back she beat $16,000 non-winners of two over a wet track at the Big A. I like the bug switch here to Cardenas and this gal owns solid early and mid pace numbers. Worth a look here in the opener if she goes off near her 12-1 morning line.
Lookbothways returns off a three month break here for Levine who is 9% winners with runners coming back off a 61-180-day break. The cut back to a spring her will suit her. She beat non-winners of two going 6 1/2 at Aqueduct three back. She catches a soft spot for her return and has landed in the money in 10 of her 14 career starts. Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:
Belmont Park Race 9 Analysis - 6/7 (5:36 ET)
#14 Therapist 5-1
#2 Sombeyay 4-1
#1 Flavius 7-2
#4 Delaware 8-1
Analysis: Therapist gets the call in a wide open race. The Clement trainee makes his first start since a fourth last October here over good ground going seven furlongs against Alw-4 optional claimers. This guy has won 4 of 8 over the turf here including his last win coming in the Elusive Quality on yielding ground last April at seven furlongs. There is not much early speed in here and this gelding has enough tactical speed to be forwardly placed if Irad is on his toes breaking from the far outside. The barn is 19% winners with runners coming back off a +180-day layoff.
Sombeyay tracked the early pace and could not match strides with the winner inside the final furlong in a runner up finish in the Appleton (G3) at Gulfstream Park going a mile. The winner Social Paranoia came back to run third in the Sunshine Forever in his next outing and was in yesterday's Fort Marcy (G3). The Pletcher trainee won the Canadian Turf (G3) two back at a mile. He is quick enough to handle the cut back to seven furlongs. he won the Sanford (G3) at six furlongs on the main track at the Spa back in '18. The barn is 24% winners moving runners from route to sprint.
Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
