Horse Races Today: Thursday's Gulfstream Park Odds
April 15, 2020
By Mike Dempsey

Gulfstream Park is back in action on Thursday with an outstanding 11-race card that kicks off at 1:00 ET.

We have seen the same racetracks in action for a couple of weeks now, just seven tracks still running— Gulfstream Park, Tampa Bay Downs, Oaklawn Park, Fonner Park, Will Rogers Downs, Los Alamitos and Remington Park.

Are going to see any addition tracks in the not too distant future?

Santa Anita and Churchill Downs would like to get underway in May, without spectators of course. The Kentucky Derby has already to been postponed until the first Saturday of September.

We did hear yesterday that Oaklawn Park will not extend their meeting beyond closing day, which is May 2. Fonner Park is scheduled to close on April 29, but track officials there are considering extending the meeting.

Gulfstream Park continues to run through the summer, and while there is usually a mass exodus from the track by trainers going to Kentucky or New York, with tracks in those locations still closed, the horse population has stayed strong in Florida.

The two marquee meetings of the summer are Del Mar and Saratoga, which are supposed to kick off in July. At this point both tracks plan on running, but whether spectators will be allowed to attend is very much in question.

Horseplayers can stream all the horse racing action using the Watch TVG App. The horse betting company based in the U.S. is offering a risk free bet up to $300 for new players.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:

GP Race 1 Clm $20,000N2L (1:00 ET)
#3 Catsoutofthebag 8-1
#1 Aerodynamic 4-1
#5 Strella's War 3-1
#6 She Fled the Scene 5-2

Analysis: Catsoutofthebag went out to quick last out, setting sharp fractions on the stretch out to a route and she weakened to finish third. It was his first go off an eight-month layoff. She should be tighter second off the shelf. Her maiden win came here going 7 1/2 furlongs with Saez aboard. Paco is listed to rife but will be replaced as he is out with a broken thumb. She is out of a stakes placed Unbridled's Song mare that has dropped two other turf winners. She just needs a more patent ride here.

Aerodynamic tracked the early pace and then drew off in the stretch to a good looking maiden win for a $16,000 tag in her third career start. She was claimed out of the race by the Sanchez barn that is 14% winners first off the claim. Blinkers are added to the mix here and she should be forwardly placed. It is not a real tough spot to face winners for the first time and with just three starts under her belt still looks as if she has some upside. Berios takes over the ride from Irad and has done well riding for this barn.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:

GP Race 9 OClm $16,000N1X (5:17 ET)
#6 R Mercedes Boy 4-1
#9 Just Kidding 7-2
#5 Charlie the Greek 5-1
#3 He Iz Gone 10-1

Analysis: R Mercedes Boy makes his first start since December where the gelding tracked the early pace and weakened to finish fifth in a Florida bred stake at Tampa Bay Downs. The gelding was a sharp winner two back against restricted $35,000 claimers, drawing clear to win by 5 1/2 lengths at GP West. He has been working quickly in the mornings for his return for the Baxter barn that is 26% winners with runners coming back off a 61-180-day layoff. His number two back seems fluky, 26 points higher than his previous top, but he looks like a good fit in this spot for a sharp barn.

Just Kidding dueled for the early lead and battled on gamely but could not match strides late with the winner in a runner up finish at this level going a mile in his first start off the claim by the Matier barn. The gelding was a solid second two back at is furlongs while in the David barn. He owns a solid pace profile throughout and has landed in the exacta in 7 of his dozen trips over the main track here.

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Gulfstream Park
R1: #3 Catsoutofthebag 8-1
R3: #8 Youreoutofcontrol 12-1
R5: #3 Stormy Derby Day 15-1
R7: #7 Genghis 8-1
R9: #3 He Iz Gone 10-1
R10: #10 Long Blade 10-1
R11: #3 Gran Malbec 12-1

Thursday's Best Bet: Canadian Game ready to play at Oaklawn Park
By Jarrod Horak April 15, 2020

Thursday’s 7th race from Oaklawn Park is a starter optional claiming event for 4-year-olds and up traveling a mile and three sixteenths on the main track (Post Time - 5:06 p.m. ET).

#10 CANADIAN GAME (4-1) captured his last three flat mile dirt starts. He is versatile and his late pace ratings are climbing, and Walter De La Cruz shows a profit with William Martin. He is a logical threat if he handles the added ground.

#8 Curlin Grey (6-1) has good form on conventional dirt and Martin Garcia wins races with Joe Sharp. He owns solid late pace ratings.

#7 Charlie’sarchangel (3-1) fired trifecta shots in his last ten starts, and he won three of those races. He figures to stalk the pace.

#2 Frost or Frippery (7-2) stalked and scored at this course/distance Feb. 17, and that was his fourth victory at Oaklawn Park.

#12 Carlos Sixes (9-2) was right there in his last four starts. He is a head away from a 3-for-3 local record, and I like his tactical speed.

#11 Red Again (10-1) is probably the one to catch. He loves this oval and has won at this distance before.

Wagers:

By: Monique Vág

We have horse racing tips and free picks for today's racing card, including betting action at Gulfstream Park and Oaklawn Park. Our horse racing analyst Monique Vág shares her five favorite horse racing bets for Thursday, April 16, which start at 1 p.m. ET.
GULFSTREAM PARK, RACE 1
1 Mile 1/16th, Purse: $21,000, Claiming $20k, Post: 1:00 p.m. ET

No. 6 SHE FLED THE SCENE (5/2): The last time she was racing at a lower level like this, she won comfortably after working out a ground saving trip. Expecting a similar effort to her win four starts back is likely, as there is quite a bit of speed that could tire late.

Although she only has one win through 13 career starts, she gets to compete versus much easier here, and should be put in a very good position to track down some of the early speed late in deep stretch.
OAKLAWN PARK, RACE 2
6 Furlongs, Purse: $26,000, Maiden Claiming $40k, Post: 2:35 p.m. ET

No. 9 DIGITAL STAR (6/1): Dropped into the maiden claiming ranks last time out and disappointed as a super short price. He will be a much better price in here today to take a shot.
Today he gets another opportunity to race against much easier, and should be put into play early.

His best efforts have been at the sprinting distance, and if he can work out a patient trip and save some ground, he could be a factor late in deep stretch.

OAKLAWN PARK, RACE 3
6 Furlongs, Purse: $27,000, Claiming $32K, Post: 3:05 p.m. ET

No. 8 SOVEREIGN IMPACT (10/1): Completely wide open field, so do not accept a short price on anyone in here. I'm taking a shot on this gelding who returns to the claiming ranks and reunites with jockey Martin Garcia.

Expect this gelding to be put into play early in an attempt to work out a stalking trip just behind some of the early speed. If he can rate well and has anything left in deep stretch, he could be a factor late at a nice price.
GULFSTREAM PARK, RACE 5
1 Mile, Purse: $35,000, Maiden Claiming $50k, Post: 3:11 p.m. ET

No. 9 UNFORESEEN(6/1): Drops into the maiden claiming ranks after a few decent efforts on the turf versus much tougher. She doesn't have a ton of early gate speed, and that could put her a little bit further back than ideal early on.

Although we haven't seen a late closing kick out of this filly yet, being able to compete against much easier today could help to spark a big effort.
OAKLAWN PARK, RACE 8
1 Mile 1/16th, Purse: $62,000, Optional Claiming 50k, Post: 5:38 p.m. ET

No. 5 LETRUSKA (9/2): She will be nowhere near her 9/2 odds at post time, but definitely looks like the one to beat returning to racing over the dirt. In her North American debut she was the best, winning at a short price in gate to wire fashion.

With not much early speed in here at all, she should get to the front fairly comfortably. If she can settle in nicely and rate well on the lead like she did back in December, she'll be incredibly difficult to pass late.
